The most common and important parasites in France against which systematic control measures should be taken are Oesophagostomum, Ascaris and Hyostrongylus in pregnant sows, and Oesophagostomum and Ascaris in piglets at weaning and fattening pigs. Strongyloides and Trichuris are found occasionally but could be sometimes important (Mestastrongylus is anexceptional finding). As regards the use of anthelmintics, emphasis is placed on treatment of sows at parturition, or of piglets on transfer to the growing units, with two treatments being given at an interval of 14-21 days. Continuous administration in the food is a complementary solution. Specific treatments for the control of Trichuris and Strongyloides are also examined. In the control of parasites the strict observation of the rules of hygiene is also very effective.</p>","PeriodicalId":75858,"journal":{"name":"Folia veterinaria Latina","volume":"6 2","pages":"95-119"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"11984124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition blood was also collected simultaneously from the jugular vein. Using sensitive radioimmunoassay techniques, these samples were analyzed for PGF2 alpha, progesterone and oestrogens. The results indicate that concentrations of PGF2 alpha in sheep blood started to rise before a fall in progesterone concentrations. A rise in total oestrogens also preceded the fall in progesterone concentrations. Disorders of behavior occurring in intensive farms pose still unresolved theoretical problems, especially in the realm of possible analogies with displacement activities. The control of behaviour reactions is possible by manipulating the environment, or the animals themselves, by genetic selection or by means of tranquillizers. A better knowledge of the effects of management methods on the behaviour of livestock is needed, however, especially if precise recommendations relating to animal welfare are to be formulated.</p>","PeriodicalId":75858,"journal":{"name":"Folia veterinaria Latina","volume":"6 1","pages":"76-90"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12191413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
