The present paper focused on the localization of each laryngeal motoneuron, the myotopical arrangements of motoneurons innervating the pharyngeal and esophageal striated muscles within the nucleus ambiguus in the motor nerve supply, and also on the location of neurons, the distribution and density of nerve fibers, the area and laterality of the innervation, and the pathway to the larynx in the sensory and sympathetic nerve supplies. Regarding the parasympathetic nerve supply, the neural ganglia and the ganglionic cells in and around the laryngeal nerves and in the laryngeal framework are demonstrated. Most of this innervation, however, is still unclear. Discussions from the literature are also reported.
","PeriodicalId":75855,"journal":{"name":"Folia phoniatrica","volume":"44 5","pages":"194-219"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12660138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twelve electrodes were placed symmetrically in the cricothyroid and thyroid lamina region. Raw EMG signals were continuously recorded, filtered, and rectified. Phonation of the vowel /a/ triggered a computer, which thereafter stored a 625-ms EMG recording, starting 375 ms before and ending 250 ms after onset of the audible phonation. Sixteen to 64 of these recordings were averaged to eliminate random noise. Twenty-six healthy subjects and 9 patients with unilateral laryngeal paralysis were studied. EMG activity exhibited great intra- and interindividual variation. Often, even in healthy subjects, EMG levels were different between the left and right side of the larynx. Thus, this method is not suitable for diagnosis or follow-up of laryngeal paralysis. Sources of variation in EMG activity are discussed.
","PeriodicalId":75855,"journal":{"name":"Folia phoniatrica","volume":"44 5","pages":"220-30"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12660802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Postoperatively we found a disturbance of the voice in 25 patients (43%), though there was a normal function of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Typical symptoms were a reduced average pitch of the speaking voice, a lowering of the upper and the lower limit of the range of pitch, a lower volume and a fast fatigue of the voice. Eight times the voice remained reduced, even 6 months postoperatively. The cause is not seen in a neural lesion but in a disturbance of the prelaryngeal musculature. The frequency of the voice changes emphasizes the importance of the phoniatric examination, especially in patients who need their voice professionally.
","PeriodicalId":75855,"journal":{"name":"Folia phoniatrica","volume":"44 6","pages":"261-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12460794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study with 7 normal and 12 pathological voices presents the results of measurements over the chest register as a function of voice intensity and frequency. Reproduction measurements show that at least 5 measurements per intensity/frequency pair are needed to get a reasonable estimation of the EGG parameters. The averaged results over about 20 measurements in the chest register showed differences for some parameters for subjects in the most different categories. The results indicated that the averaged sound spectra produced by MH patients resembled more closely the spectra produced by healthy controls, while the spectra by SR patients differed from those of MH patients and controls. However, this controversial differentiation obscures the additional dichotomy between linguistic knowledge for production and linguistic knowledge for recognition. In this article it is shown that production and recognition differ, that recognition is not simply the inverse of production, and that the derivation of production from recognition and recognition from production require a small set of generalizable 'transitional determinacies'. Secondly, it is shown that transitional determinacies explain the difference between 'overt' and 'covert' recognition recently observed in prosopagnosics, patients unable to recognize familiar faces. Prosopagnosics and normals are found to differ in their transitional determinacies, such that prosopagnosics require more binders (precisors) for covert recognition than normals. In general, it is concluded that transitional determinacies are as necessary to the theory of grammar as determinacies themselves.
","PeriodicalId":75855,"journal":{"name":"Folia phoniatrica","volume":"44 6","pages":"282-90"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000266162","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12460796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, several recurring hypotheses about the nature of the clinical disorder of language impairment in children and underlying etiologies are explored and the ways in which we are moving forward in our understanding of them are considered. Specifically, in the first part, the recent thinking on the nature of specific language impairment as a clinical concept is examined. Characteristics of the population are reviewed and the search for causation is considered. Literature on the relations between language and cognition and between language and social cognition is probed for contributions to our understanding of developmental disorders of language. Two areas in which we have seen marked progress and which hold promise for development in the coming decade are the focus of the second part of the paper. The focal areas are: computer-assisted language sample analyses and neurophysiological contribution to understanding language impairment in children. Thoughts about future directions for work in the area of developmental disorders of language are offered in conclusion.
","PeriodicalId":75855,"journal":{"name":"Folia phoniatrica","volume":"44 3-4","pages":"126-42"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000266148","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12555241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
