The objective of this study was to determine 1) the susceptibility of ATDR human tumor cell lines to interleukin-2 (IL-2)-induced LAK cell-mediated cytotoxicity, and to assess 2) the characteristics of the population of LAK cells as effector cells on the tumor cell lines tested and 3) the relationship between the susceptibility of ATDR cells and their expression of surface antigens.Parent strains of CEM (derived from leukemia), KB (derived from oral squamous cell carcinoma), and TCM (derived from metastasized lung cell carcinoma from oral squamous cell carcinoma) cells were used as drug-sensitive cells. The ATDR cell lines were established from the parent cells used; the ATDR cell lines were CEM (resistant to vinblastine, VLB; CEM/VLB0.1 and CEM/VLB1.0), KB (resistant to cisplatin, CDDP, and bleomycin, BLM; KB/CDDP1.0 and KB/BLM1.0, respectively) and TCM (resistant to CDDP; TCM/CDDP1.0). Peripheral blood lymphocytes were obtained from nine healthy volunteers and fractionated; the fractions consisted of unfractionated whole cells, CD 4 + cells, CD 8 + cells, and CD16+ cells. Each fraction was cultured with IL-2, and the induced LAK cells were used as effector cells.Whole-LAK cells were the most cytotoxic against all ATDR cell lines tested (as compared with the parent cells). However, the antitumor activity of the fractionated cells was limited (antitumor activity: CD16+-LAK, 60-80% on CEM/VLB0.1 and 1.0; CD 8+-LAK, about 30% on KB/CDDP1.0 and about 50% on TCM/CDDP1.0). The expressions of P-glycoprotein (Pgp), major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and lymphocyte function-associated antigen-3 (LFA-3) were respectively high in CEM/VLB; KB/CDDP1.0, KB/BLM1.0 and TCM/CDDP1.0; KB/CDDP1.0 and KB/BLM1.0; and TCM/CDDP1.0. In contrast, the susceptibility of the ATDR cells to LAK killing was not affected by anti-P-gp, anti-MHC class I, anti-ICAM-1, or anti-LFA-3 monoclonal antibodies.These results indicate that the effective population of LAK cells varies according to the tumor cell line, and are consistent with the assumption that the susceptibility of drug resistant cells to LAK cells depends on the property of the parent tumor cells and the type of antitumor drug that induces ATDR cells.","PeriodicalId":75798,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry in Japan","volume":"36 1","pages":"73-76"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71043003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Soft alkaline solution water included about 60 ppm effective chlorine that exhibits a bactericidal effect. In order to evaluate the possibility of using a soft alkaline solution water for periodontal treatment, the bactericidal effect of the solution on periodontopathic bacteria was investigated. Bactericidal effect of soft alkaline solution water was compared with hard oxidized water. The effect of saliva and serum and soft alkaline solution were compared to determine the bactericidal effect. The results revealed that soft alkaline solution water bactericidal effect is the same as hard oxidized water on all bacteria. Moreover, the bactericidal effect of soft alkaline solution water plus 10% saliva was stronger than hard oxidized water. The results suggested the usefulness of soft alkaline solution water in the periodontal treatment.","PeriodicalId":75798,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry in Japan","volume":"36 1","pages":"136-139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"63814639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To overcome these problems, we developed a vascularized, innervated foream flap, which is elevated without removing the ramus communicans between the radial artery and vein and the vessels that nourish the lateral cutaneous nerves. We performed reconstruction of the tongue, gingiva, and mouth floor using vascularized innervated forearm flaps (three cases) and nonvascularized innervated forearm flaps (three cases). At 6 months postoperatively, sensation recovered slightly in one of three nonvascularized innervated forearm flaps, whereas the sensations of touch, pain and temperature recovered in all three vascularized innervated forearm flaps at 2 months postoperatively.","PeriodicalId":75798,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry in Japan","volume":"33 1","pages":"71-74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71043462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the clenching level was gradually increased, dynamic stability of the ICP in 10normal subjects and 10patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) was evaluated from occlusal contacts, deviation of the incisal point of the mandible and bilateral anterior temporalis and masseter muscle activity.The obtained results were as follows:1. Increases in the clenching level produced changes in the location of occlusal contacts of ICP in TMD patients.2. During clenching of ICP, displacement of the mandible in TMD patients was greater than in normal subjects.3. During clenching of ICP, activity of the masseter muscle had a greater effect on the occlusal contact stability than the anterior temporalis muscle.","PeriodicalId":75798,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry in Japan","volume":"32 1","pages":"52-54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68578902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study involved 29 dental colleges or university hospitals in Japan, and consisted of two parts: one, investigation of the share of antimicrobial agents used in a 10-day period from 28th September through 9th November, 1992, and the other, categorization of antimicrobial agents used over a 6-month period from April through September 1992. Antimicrobial agents accounted for 22% of all oral medicines, and ranked second just behind antiinflammatory and analgesic drugs which accounted for 27%. The order of share in descending frequency was: cephem series including Cefaclor and Cephalexin ; penicillin series such as Lenampicillin, Amoxycillin, and Bacampicillin. Injectable antimicrobial agents were used in as many as 62% of patients who were given injectable forms. The breakdown is as follows: cephem series, 50%; penicillin series, 27%; and others comprised of fosfomycin, aminoglyco sides and tetracycline series, only 14%.","PeriodicalId":75798,"journal":{"name":"Dentistry in Japan","volume":"32 1","pages":"128-130"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"63811209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
