Poultry and eggs were identified in various countries as most probable sources and routes of infection. An increased virulence for poultry, leading to chronic septicaemic infections of the animals, is discussed. The following measures are proposed for control: 1) identification and eradication of infected flocks, 2) improved husbandry practices, 3) salmonella-free animal feed, 4) hygienic disposal of all waste, 5) improved abattoir practices, 6) better education of the consumer concerning food hygiene, and 7) improved cooperation between commercial producers, research and Public Health while promoting modern epidemiologic and diagnostic methods.</p>","PeriodicalId":75776,"journal":{"name":"Das Offentliche Gesundheitswesen","volume":"53 10","pages":"687-92"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12999893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has become evident that the multiplicator directly involved in helping alcohol-dependents must take into consideration the structure and group dynamics within the company before they can work efficiently. The following report deals with the difficulties within a company that are linked to this problem area. Examples serve to show how poorly efficient any aid to alcohol-dependents can be if the persons involved fail to see clearly which prerequisites and approaches are essential. This can give rise to an explosive atmosphere of possible conflicts especially at the place of work. Non-smokers expect from the company doctor--not without some justification--to support their interests. However, it cannot be his obligation to make things worse by going all out in favour of the non-smokers, because he also wants to be listened to by the smokers. The article deals with this delicate problem. It also discusses as to whether the company can be enlisted for support in case of a wish to stop smoking. Risks and limits of such an approach are analysed. Special attention is given to the danger that AIDS-related problems may in the long run be handled only as a technical administration process returning to the principle of blaming the victim. The Federal Government's decision in February 1991 to terminate all further support of specise government programmes on AIDS prevention might have disastrous consequences. A more rational AIDS debate should concentrate on continuous efforts to stabilize and further improve the existing social network. Established programmes should be developed further. Results and knowledge of AIDS programmes might be very useful to promote and encourage other parts of public health service. Preventive efforts to influence and change attitudes and practices should always be supplementary to improving the social environment of people at risk. Improvement of general and individual health includes changing of living and working conditions promoting health hazards.</p>","PeriodicalId":75776,"journal":{"name":"Das Offentliche Gesundheitswesen","volume":"53 8-9","pages":"459-61"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12998532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
