Schumann, suffering from a recurring psychosis since 1833 at least, had been received there after a suicidal attempt on March 4th, 1854. His physical and psychical state deteriorated permanently and Schumann died on July 29th, 1856, somatically and mentally disordered. {"title":"[The correct relationship to time].","authors":"O F Bollnow","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Time, in a human life, has been defined in modern philosophy, psychology and psychopathology as a well-organized structure. The question concerning the right relation to time has not been treated so often. Hereby, different aspects have to be considered. (1) Inasfar as time can be seen as a perpetually flowing stream, the duty arises to fit in (one-self), in the right way, without haste and without tarrying, in the course of time. This demands the virtue of imperturbability. (2) From the experience of continuous wane results the desire for steadiness in eternity. The penetration into temporality is successful in two ways: in the absolute determination of existence, and in the experience of the great, overwhelming happiness. But these moments are rare. (3) In the relation to the future, again two interrelated possibilities have to be distinguished. On one side, it has to be planned responsibly but, on the other side, all plans are limited by fate and accident. Opposite to the deeply experienced threat lies the true hope as a last structure of time by man, which must be seized resolutely against all temptations.</p>","PeriodicalId":75735,"journal":{"name":"Confinia psychiatrica. It will be useful for psychopathology to have a critical look on ideas and models of modern linguistic science. This is especially true for those tendencies which are interested in the concept of a theory of speaking and acting and work out the social implications of communicational processes beyond the formal examination of language structure. From this point of view new basic knowledge of psychopathology may accumulate. Residents on both ends of the continuum of brain damage could paint interesting, expressive and/or original pictures, in spite of the fact that the first eight residents were on psychotropic medication and the last four were occasionally handicapped by constructional apraxia. Ten adjudicators ranked pairs of figure drawings for each resident in decreasing order of 'aesthetic pleasingness' and 'originality'. Degree of brain damage was found unrelated to both measures. Interadjudicator agreement was stronger on 'originality' than on 'aesthetic pleasingness'. Some of the beneficial and provocative results of art therapy with the elderly are elaborated ans a plea made for accepting their observed creative performance as part of the realm of legitimate art.</p>","PeriodicalId":75735,"journal":{"name":"Confinia psychiatrica. They have been produced during the time of my participation in an analytic group. Fairly detailed information can be given about how the drawing process developed (first inspiration, initial situation, considerations during drawing). The formative and constituent elements of the drawing conceived consciously during its production are contrasted with those that have only later become conscious. The discussion of this own series of drawings and sketches should facilitate the comprehension of, and approach to, the drawings of the patients, which can also be considered to be 'indirect portraits' of their own personality and of their current environmental situatiion.
