Half of each group was high yielders and the other half was low with a mean daily milk yield of 32.2 and 18.6 kg for Holstein-M, 14.6 and 6.7 kg for Holstein-E, and 7.2 and 1.8 kg for Buffaloes-E, respectively. Blood samples were collected after the morning milking. Mean plasma thyroxine and triiodothyronine concentrations were significantly higher in Holstein-M than those in Holstein-E or Buffaloes-E. In all animal groups, the high yielders generally had lower plasma thyroxine and antidiuretic hormone but higher plasma triiodothyronine contents than the low yielders. Buffaloes had lower plasma cortisol and 9-fold higher plasma antidiuretic hormone as compared with the two Holstein groups.
","PeriodicalId":75586,"journal":{"name":"Beitrage zur tropischen Landwirtschaft und Veterinarmedizin","volume":"27 4","pages":"461-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13753727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Effect of dietary palm kernel oil and biotin on the fatty liver and kidney syndrome in broiler chicken.","authors":"R A Oloyo, B K Ogunmodede","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The effect of feeding biotin and palm kernel oil to broiler chicks on the appearance of Fatty Liver and Kidney Syndrome (FLKS) was investigated. A total of 480 broiler chicks was divided into two equal batches each of which was divided into 6 groups of 40 chicks per group. Each group was further subdivided into equal units of 20 chicks. Six dietary levels of biotin (40, 80, 120, 160, 200, and 240 mcg/kg feed) were given to the first batch of chicks, while the second batch had 2% palm kernel oil added to the six dietarybiotin levels. These two basic rations were supplemented with biotin in order to obtain six levels of the vitamin in the rations. The results showed that the 2% palm kernel oil forage affected FLKS mortality and the minimum biotin requirement. FLKS mortality was significantly reduced in case of palm kernel oil supplement. A lower amount of biotin (120 mcg/kg feed) was needed in case of palm kernel oil supplement-as compared with the necessary biotin (160 mcg/kg feed)-in order to prevent FLKS mortality when palm kernel oil was not contained in the rations. The biochemical analysis of the liver and kidney syndrome-coupled with the correlation and regression analysis of the data collected-showed that a minimum of 120 mcg/kg feed was needed by broiler chicks for the prevention of FLKS.
","PeriodicalId":75586,"journal":{"name":"Beitrage zur tropischen Landwirtschaft und Veterinarmedizin","volume":"27 3","pages":"347-55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13761582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The maximum rate of egg production occurred in the first 12 weeks of lay, followed by a gradual decrease, which became significantly pronounced in the 25 to 48 week production phase. After 48 h rumen incubation time the dry matter loss varied between 10.0 and 27.7%. The 48 h rumen dry matter loss of rice hulls from Hungary increased from 14.0 (untreated control) only to 17.9, 20.1, and 17.0% after chemical treatment with 2% NaOH, 4% CaO, and 4% urea, respectively. gamma-irradiation with doses of 0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 MGy effected rumen dry matter losses of unground rice hulls from Hungary of 6.4, 14.5, 13.5, 21.3, 37.1, and 70.5%. The apparent digestibility of organic matter of untreated rice hulls from Hungary amounted to 19.2%, as found in tests with wethers. The main reasons of low digestibility and the negligible effect of chemical treatments are the high contents of lignin (ca. 15%) and silica (up to 23% of the dry matter). Therefore rice hulls are not suitable as feedstuff for ruminants.
","PeriodicalId":75586,"journal":{"name":"Beitrage zur tropischen Landwirtschaft und Veterinarmedizin","volume":"27 1","pages":"93-100"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13891296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Effect of varying concentrate feeding levels on some traits in lactating goats.","authors":"E E Ndemanisho","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

9 lactating goats were divided into 3 groups based on their milk yield and were fed concentrate over 6 weeks at levels of 0, 0.7, and 1.4 kg/d. Increased concentrate feeding caused a significant increase of the blood glucose content and a significant decrease of the milk fat content. Milk yield, liveweight, and protein content of the milk as well as the blood ketones were not influenced significantly by concentrate feeding. The 1.4 kg/d variety did not yield any considerable increase of the milk performance and decreased the milk fat content. From the point of view of feed economy, practical feeding of milking goats with 0.7 kg/d concentrate is therefore recommended.
","PeriodicalId":75586,"journal":{"name":"Beitrage zur tropischen Landwirtschaft und Veterinarmedizin","volume":"26 4","pages":"407-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14354373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
