The following results were obtained: The prophylaxis group evidenced a special form of calcification consisting of fibrodentin-like hard tissue developing intramurally in the dentin wall especially at the pulp floor and spreading irregularily into the pulp cavity by displacing the degenerating pulp tissue (n = 24). These teeth were ankylosed in the bi- and trifurcation area as well as inside the roots. This kind of hard tissue was not observed in the teeth from untreated children. Only 5 children had greater calcifications attached at the pulp wall. Nevertheless, this difference was statistically significant (p = 0.001) and indicates a relationship between fluoride prophylaxis, the special form of pulp calcification and tooth ankylosis.</p>","PeriodicalId":75566,"journal":{"name":"ASDC journal of dentistry for children","volume":"69 2","pages":"201-6, 126"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22183514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, information related to these patients is very scarce. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of DDE in mentally retarded children and to correlate it with specific perinatal factors and childhood diseases. A total of 170 retarded children between 4 and 17 years from a nonfluoridated area were examined. Teeth with defective enamel were seen in 37% of the patients. Permanent central incisors were the most affected teeth (68.38%). White/single opacities were present in 48.38% and white/diffuse patchy opacities in 28.38% of the patients. There was a significantly higher prevalence of DDE in patients with history of bacterial diseases. Samples were divided into 3 groups: children cereals (A), chocolate milk (B) and soy beverages (C). Mean TF concentrations +/- SD (amplitude, unit mg F/mL or mg F/g) were: A) 4.255 +/- 3.038 (0.200-7.840, n = 6); B) 0.345 +/- 0.469 (0.047-1.272, n = 6); and C) 0.153 +/- 0.070 (0.092-0.295, n = 8). Five samples of cereals and one sample of chocolate milk were analyzed for SF. In cereals analyzed for SF, all F was soluble, while for the chocolate milk, approximately 50% of TF was soluble. It was observed that some of the cereals and beverages analyzed may be important contributors for total daily fluoride intake. Cases are presented to illustrate that the initiation and development of supernumerary premolars are often delayed by a magnitude of years.
