Seven dermatophytes were used as test fungi. The solar simulator at fluence rate 400 W/m2 for 30 minutes induced marked inhibition for spore germination of the photosensitized fungi. The rate of inhibition varied according to the fungal species and concentration of the photosensitizer. There was an increase in percentage inhibition of spore germination as the concentration of HPD or MB increased. Complete inhibition for spore germination of Trichophyton. verrucosum, T. mentagrophytes, and Miccrosporum canis was induced when these species were pretreated with 10(-3) M of HPD or MB before irradiation. Epidermophyton floccosum, T. rubrum, M. gypseum and T. violaceum were less sensitive to irradiation when pretreated with HPD or MB. On contrary, the maximum reduction in percentage spore germination was induced at the lowest concentration (10(-7) M) of TBO. The tested dermatophytes were mostly capable of producing different enzymes (keratinase, phosphatases, amylase, lipase). The separate application of radiation or photosensitizer was ineffective or exerted slight inhibition on enzyme production. However, the activity of the enzymes was drastically inhibited when the fungi were irradiated after their treatment with photosensitizer. T. verrucosum and T. mentagrophytes were the most sensitive. In a trail to apply a control measure against dermatomycosis using solar simulator radiation, the results revealed that the radiation was successful in curing the MB-photosensitized guinea pigs, artificially infected with T. verrucosum, T. mentagrophytes or M. canis. The percentage of recovery reached 100% in some treatments.
","PeriodicalId":75388,"journal":{"name":"Acta microbiologica Polonica","volume":"52 1","pages":"65-79"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22529167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In chemical assays the strains were shown to excrete mostly catecholate (88 strains) and hydroxamate (42 strains) type of siderophores. Forty-one strains produced both catecholate and hydroxamate siderophores whereas one isolate produced only hydroxamate. Besides, the isolates were screened for genes coding for another siderophore: yersiniabactin. The genes for biosynthesis and uptake of yersiniabactin are located on the high-pathogenicity island (HPI) of Yersinia spp. The presence of three marker genes irp1, irp2 and fyuA was estimated by polymerase chain reaction. Two strains: E. aerogenes and E. cloaceae possessed irp1, irp2 and fyuA genes. Conjugation is responsible for the spread of genes coding for antibiotic resistance and xenobiotic degradation. Transfer events are reported in animal, rhizosphere and phylloplane ecosystems and in non polluted and polluted water and soil. Genetic exchange between Bacteria and Archaea is also observed. {"title":"Antimicrobial resistance of Listeria monocytogenes.","authors":"Joanna Poroś-Głuchowska, Zdzisław Markiewicz","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Listeria monocytogenes is an opportunistic pathogen that causes rare but frequently fatal infections, termed listerioses. In general, strains of L. monocytogenes are susceptible to a wide range of antibiotics, except for the cephalosporins, fluorochinolones and fosfomycin (Hof, 1991). The current therapy of choice is a combination of ampicillin and aminoglycoside, usually gentamicin (Lorber, 1997). In cases when it is not possible to use a beta-lactam antibiotic, second-choice therapy involves the use of an association of trimethoprim with a sulfonamide, such as in co-trimoxazole, in which the more active in the combination seems trimethoprim, synergized by the sulfa compound. Other second line agents for listeriosis include erythromycin and vancomycin (Temple and Nahata, 2000). The first strains of L. monocytogenes resistant to antibiotics were reported in 1988 (Poyart-Salmeron et al. 1990) The present paper reviews the current state of affairs with regard to the resistance of L. monocytogenes isolated from food products and clinical material to different antibiotics, with particular emphasis on those used in the therapy of listeriosis.
","PeriodicalId":75388,"journal":{"name":"Acta microbiologica Polonica","volume":"52 2","pages":"113-29"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"24055556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The project consisted of isolation and cultivation of microbes on laboratory media and the subsequent characterization of pure isolates. In a lagoon at the Czechowice Oil Refinery, Poland, a biopile with actively and passively aerated sections was constructed and has been operated since 1997. The bioremediation process has been continuously monitored by physical, chemical, and microbiological methods. One hundred and forty nine bacterial and fungal strains were isolated from site soils by standard procedures. Analysis of cultivable microorganisms revealed a diverse microbial population within the cultured isolates. Among isolated strains, Pseudomonas and Chryseomonas genera predominated in the bacterial population while Candida, Fusarium, and Trichophyton dominated the fungal population. This paper describes the application of traditional microbiological methods (plating and microscopic methods) to evaluate cultivable microbial diversity in bioremediated soil.
","PeriodicalId":75388,"journal":{"name":"Acta microbiologica Polonica","volume":"52 2","pages":"173-82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"24055561","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Environmental factors such as bed diet and cigarette smoking strongly stimulate initation and progression of atherosclerotic changes in the artery wall. It has been recognized that deeply processed food may be a source of various factors potentiating processes related to atherosclerosis development among which inflammatory processes are of great importance. The aim of our studies was to find out if the trans-unsaturated fatty acids as well as acrylamide present in foods have the potential to provoke pro-inflammatory states in the body and enhance atherosclerosis risk. The results of our in vitro studies have shown that trans fatty acids cause a significant increase in secretion of reactive oxygen species, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor a and metalloproteinase-9, and enhance apoptosis. It indicates that in vivo trans-fatty acids may distroy the endothelium integrity and cause plaque rupture. Our in vivo studies in the group of healthy volunteers have shown that the consumption of potato chips rich in acrylamide cause the significant increase in plasma C-reactive protein and homocysteine concentrations. Enhanced CRP and HCY levels are accepted markers of enhanced atherosclerosis risk.
","PeriodicalId":75388,"journal":{"name":"Acta microbiologica Polonica","volume":"52 Suppl ","pages":"75-81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"24447609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
