Simultaneously the concentrations of acetone, as well as methanol and propanol-2 were analyzed. {"title":"Information about morality and behaviour of victims.","authors":"B Pannain,&nbsp;M Pannain,&nbsp;T Mininni,&nbsp;M Albino","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>According to the Italian Law of Procedure (1988) documents which inform about the morality of the guilty, the witness and the victim are not admitted; those about the victim are admitted only when the criminal event needs to be evaluated in relation to his/her behaviour and moral qualities. In our opinion, in this case, generic moral qualities do not have any real significance; only information about the victim's objective behaviour should be admitted: for instance, in the case of the crime of \"corruption of a minor\", a type of objective behaviour can be habitual prostitution. Moreover, the norm at issue contrasts with the general principle in the Italian law that the rights concerning the personality of an individual, particularly of a minor, are to be protected, and with the fundamental norm in the law of Procedure according to which criminological examinations are not allowed during the trial. {"title":"Attaining specificity in the measurement of ethanol in breath.","authors":"C M Bell","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>In most cases, new breath alcohol measuring devices satisfy the requirements for accuracy and precision. All instruments however, have responded to some substances other than ethanol. In this area of instruments specificity for ethanol there is scope for further development. Substances other than ethanol may be distinguished as interfering substances by the use of two methods of ethanol detection. One example of this is dual-wavelength infra-red detection. Alternatively, infra-red detection could be coupled to a fuel-cell or Taguchi cell detector. Comparison of the two readings obtained should allow most substances other than ethanol to be distinguished as interfering substances. Two instruments using two modes of ethanol detection are the Intoximeter 3000 (3.4 um infra-red plus Taguchi cell) and the BAC DataMaster (dual wavelength infra-red). These have proved unsuitable because of incomplete specificity for ethanol, largely because acetone appears to be considered the only potential interfering substance. In the selection of two modes of ethanol detection, each system must be chosen such that a comparison of the response from each mode would indicate a wide range of possible interfering substances, not just acetone. {"title":"Death by bolus impaction of the larynx.","authors":"W Bonte,&nbsp;B Jacob","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The paper reports on 78 cases of fatal choking observed in the Institute of Legal Medicine, University of Duesseldorf, since 1947. The age median of all victims was 53 years. There were 24 females among the victims. Only in one child a solitary occlusion of the glottis by a collar-button was found. In all other cases bolus material was distributed over more than one region, e.g. larynx, glottis and trachea. In 50 victims single pieces of meat, ham, herring etc. were found. In the remaining 28 cases the bolus material was roughly chewed. More than 80 per cent of cases occurred in restaurants and lodgings, only small numbers in public places, shops and hospitals. With the exception of three children, one patient with a partial horizontal resection of the larynx and some mentally handicapped persons all bolus death victims were heavily drunk (median BAC 2.1 Promille). Our analysis included the incidence of all types of aggression which required medical attention in the city of Murcia (Spain) between February and June 1988.
