Government imposed safety precautions limiting face-to-face contact to control spread of infection contributed to isolation, fear of illness, death, job loss, and existing psychological distress. As remote service delivery continues to offer a viable alternative to traditional in-person care, the growing diversity of the U.S. population demands culturally competent mental health practices. Notably, multicultural and diversity issues and patient identity markers may not be as apparent through digital platforms as they would be in person. This article aims to provide culturally responsive recommendations for practitioners delivering telehealth services. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved) Impact Statement As multicultural diversity in telehealth services has become an important professional and societal need, this guide provides detailed suggestions and guidance for practitioners on essential considerations in providing behavioral telehealth services to culturally diverse patient communities. No such manual existed in the current literature, so this project was undertaken to meet that need. As norms about bias, how to measure it, and mitigating its effects have progressed over time, new tools to help carry out this work have become available. This article synergizes the latest relevant psychological literature with the combined wisdom and experience of an interdisciplinary group of experts in racism, law, psychology, mental health, and biomedical science to provide a framework to advance the jury selection process. We describe and provide examples of how jurors should be asked direct questions about their behaviors rather than simply their attitudes. Further, we suggest that racial justice allies should be identi fi ed as potential jurors because such individuals will be best able to approach their jury duty in an impartial, antiracist manner. This article supports psychologists and legal professionals in efforts to select an impartial jury by advancing a fuller understanding of racism and how it can impact jurors. As norms about bias and how to measure it and mitigate its effects have progressed over time, new tools to carry out this work have become available. This article represents a synergy of the latest relevant psychological literature to inform best practices in the selection of antiracist jurors to create more just legal outcomes.","PeriodicalId":74486,"journal":{"name":"Practice innovations (Washington, D.C.)","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41749908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One estimate indicates that roughly 30-40% of psychologists know of a colleague with a current substance abuse problem (Good et al., 1995). 12-step mutual self-help groups, particularly Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), are the most widely used form of treatment for addiction in the United States. AA has empirically demonstrated effectiveness at fostering long-term treatment success, and is widely accessible throughout the world. However, psychotherapist participation in AA raises a number of ethical concerns, particularly regarding the potential for extra-therapy contact with clients and the development of multiple relationships. This article attempts to review the precarious ethical and practical situations that psychotherapists, either in long-term recovery or newly sober, may find themselves in during AA involvement. Moreover, this article provides suggestions for psychotherapists in AA regarding how to best adhere to both the principles of AA (i.e., the 12-steps and 12-traditions) and the American Psychological Association's <i>Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct</i>.</p>","PeriodicalId":74486,"journal":{"name":"Practice innovations (Washington, D.C.)","volume":"7 1","pages":"40-52"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8923620/pdf/nihms-1758382.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"10819849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Key informant interviews of mental health clinicians in 1 university addressed the impact of COVID-19 on students' mental health, adoption of telemedicine, and general mental health care. Theoretical thematic analysis identified positive and negative effects on care. Interviews with 6 psychologists and 4 psychiatrists (50% of invitees;3 men and 7 women) highlighted social isolation and lifestyle restrictions as primary contributors to prevalent mood disorders. Telemedicine offered accessibility, safety, and efficiency but limitations included: technical problems;patient distraction;lack of confidentiality;compromised therapeutic alliance;and management of unstable patients. Lower-income students were described as commonly lacking peer support and an appropriate setting for telemedicine visits. Mental health clinicians described university students as commonly affected by mental health disorders. Telemedicine offered safer, accessible care but, for mental health care, was limited by lack of confidentiality, patient distraction, and care for unstable patients. Lower income patients were especially challenged by less peer support and privacy for telemedicine. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved) Impact Statement Clinical Impact Statement-Study clinicians highlighted negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health that required rapid adoption of safe, accessible remote care via telemedicine. Yet for mental health, challenges with telemedicine require innovative strategies to promote patient engagement, foster a therapeutic alliance, and manage unstable patients remotely.
