Results reveal three overlapping themes: community through religious faith, activism within religion, and mixed experiences with religion, suggesting the need for acceptance in different communities and reflecting differing perspectives on spirituality. Findings point to new directions for future research on religious/spiritual journeys of LGBTQ+ elders of color.","PeriodicalId":73626,"journal":{"name":"Journal of black sexuality and relationships","volume":"8 1","pages":"63 - 92"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47393183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explored whether advice LGBTQ+ women of color aged 50+ give their younger selves reflected regret or fit into the 12 life domains Roese and Summerville (2005) indicated that most regrets fall. Data were collected from 15 one-on-one interviews with eligible participants. Findings indicated three major themes in advice: be less fearful, embrace who they are, and harbor no regrets. In-depth interviews with a convenience sample of 11 respondents took place via Zoom as part of a larger national research project. Informed by Marxian theories and intersectionality, data analysis focused on the forms of change-making work respondents considered most important. Colorism is defined as bias which exists based upon an individual's skin tone as compared to others of their particular race (Russell, Wilson, & Hall, 2013). Color plays an important role in racial and ethnic identity development, although it is seldom addressed either empirically or conceptually. This paper examines the historical context and current implications of colorism as it relates to identity development, and identifies areas of focus related to clinical practice and future research.","PeriodicalId":73626,"journal":{"name":"Journal of black sexuality and relationships","volume":"7 1","pages":"75 - 98"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/BSR.2020.0018","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42003795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Limited research attention has been dedicated to understanding this public health problem among African American youth and emerging adults. The objective of this paper is to describe the characteristics of the prior rape experiences of African American emerging adults living in an urban area in Georgia. This study summarized findings from qualitative interviews and survey data from a National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH)-funded pilot study. Findings from this study reveal that 33% (survey) and 20% (interview) of participants in samples reported ever being raped. The characteristics of their rape experiences are described and the implications of results are discussed.","PeriodicalId":73626,"journal":{"name":"Journal of black sexuality and relationships","volume":"7 1","pages":"118 - 99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/BSR.2020.0019","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46212308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
