Enacted and performed through singing, eating and toasting, this social ritual involves specific occasions, participants and act sequences. It has become a major site for relationship building, one in which content-oriented face-to-face interaction must be reconfigured for the karaoke experience. Talk that allows parties to share their thoughts or negotiate business deals directly are no longer keys to business negotiation, but assume different meaning after people have 'sung together'. Performing such social rituals redefines Taiwanese relationships and business negotiation practices.","PeriodicalId":73431,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Chinese culture and management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJCCM.2009.029402","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66716751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In response to the rise of digital technologies in the 1990s, music agencies were required to restructure their A&R function (artist and repertoire: talent scouting and the product development) to leverage a brand's value with increasing emphasis on the role of originally peripheral functions, such as music concerts, fan's activities or featuring in commercial. This study holds that the glamorisation of digital labour in a 'celebrity economy' has easily dismissed the possible continuities with the modern sweatshop and an increasing degradation of knowledge work. By looking at digital technologies as a specific instance of the fundamental role that restructures the economy, this study tries to highlight the connections between the changing role of branding the artists and their fans in the 'celebrity economy' in the digital age.","PeriodicalId":73431,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Chinese culture and management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJCCM.2009.029403","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66716790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper aims to present the expectation of young Chinese generation employees (post '80s) that emerged from Confucianism shaped by an increasing individualistic ideology in China. The design/methodology/approach of this paper is multiple case studies followed by face to face interviews. The result of this paper profiles an expected Chinese manager who natured by Confucianism principles and practiced by Western scientific approach, which will be the most accepted by current young Chinese employees. The generalisation of the findings may be limited by the small size samples from one occupational sector and region. The paper fills up the gap of existing Chinese management theories. It also offers practice-based operational guidance for managers facilitating their personalities and daily managing behaviour. The value of this paper is to present the Chinese young employees' expectations of their managers and the relations between them and managers, in turn to advise the managers adjust their managing behaviour in the daily management.","PeriodicalId":73431,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Chinese culture and management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJCCM.2009.029250","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66716641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How to recruit and retain talented employees is a tough question that each game company has to face. Presently, most companies adopt high investment in R&D and monetary reward for solving the problem. In this paper, the authors aim to identify factors that contribute to the talent exodus. With the qualitative approaches, the authors aim to find the reasons why employees of different levels leave their working place. In the findings, the authors point out that monetary reward, training, employee involvement and motivation at work are the critical factors for the loss of talented staff and for the adjustment and implementation of the organisation's human resource management strategies. At the end of this paper, some recommendations are put forward in terms of the disadvantages of HR systems of the Chinese online game companies.","PeriodicalId":73431,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Chinese culture and management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJCCM.2009.029253","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66716704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Body dysmorphic disorder is a preoccupation with an 'imagined' or exaggerated defect in one's appearance. With an eye to understanding students' inner and phenomenological worlds, a body dysmorphic disorder self-check test was administered to 560 college students in Taiwan. The finding of this study shows that influenced by Chinese culture, female students in Taiwan experience more body dysmorphic disorder than male students. It could be possible that cultures have placed great value on women's physical attractiveness and beauty; hence, women get social pressure about how they should look. Consequently, they rely more on appearance and attractiveness in their perception of gender difference.","PeriodicalId":73431,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Chinese culture and management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJCCM.2009.023600","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66716528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It seeks to understand the roots of this model of leadership in the domain of social-psychological legacies and reveals how it is perpetuated in mainland China. A recent exploratory study demonstrates how this pattern of authority sharing is colouring different facets of organisational life. Moreover, underlying assumptions identified in this investigation – the self-seeking individual, hierarchical social reality and the hostile environment – were found to enhance this form of leadership, which is marked by authoritarianism, arbitrariness, a unique form of dependency that is not nurtured at all, and over-dependent subordinates. Challenges, however, are now being mounted against this leadership mode but whether it can succeed or not is an open question. In the meantime, Chinese managers will have to be mindful of the fact that this leadership style might be well suited for organisations which require a less sophisticated workforce and are maintained by routine skills. However, they are not equipped to compete in a 'knowledge-intensive' industry and that they are hindering organisational learning or continuous improvement implicit in other management models.","PeriodicalId":73431,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Chinese culture and management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJCCM.2009.023599","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66716517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since 2003, setting up strategic alliances with the Chinese online game operators has been chosen as the main mode by foreign game companies to enter China. With the rise of the Chinese online industry, the market shares of the foreign licensed games have been declining from their original dominant position. In this paper, instead of concerning the relationship between natural cultural difference and the foreign licensed game operation, the authors use Tung's technical competence theory to explore factors that have caused decline in the market share of foreign licensed games in China. In the findings, the lack of in-depth knowledge of market demand, the lack of appropriate product supply, the lack of effective business strategy and management teams as well as the Chinese government's local protection policies are classified as the main reasons for foreign games' market decline in China.","PeriodicalId":73431,"journal":{"name":"International journal of Chinese culture and management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJCCM.2009.023596","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66716458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
