Among U.S. medical schools with integrative medicine training programs, passive instruction rather than active involvement in clinical delivery is the norm. Future health professionals may benefit from innovative educational models framed around the core competencies for integrative medicine established by the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health (ACIMH). One model that incorporates students into the delivery of CIH services is the integrative group medical visit (IGMV): a program offering peer support, education about nutrition, acupressure, mindfulness, yoga, sleep hygiene, and more. IGMVs increase access to CIH services, decrease emergency department utilization, and decrease pain medication usage in populations with chronic pain. Involvement in these programs present students with an opportunity to learn about CIH modalities and their delivery in underserved populations. Prior articles have discussed IGMVs as a component of preventive medicine residency training, but little has been said about how trainee experiences align with ACIMH’s core competencies. This commentary articulates, from students’ perspectives, how the IGMV (1) teaches the ACIMH’s integrative medicine core competencies and (2) offers a unique approach to actively involve future providers in CIH delivery.","PeriodicalId":73395,"journal":{"name":"Integrative medicine reports","volume":"1 1","pages":"186-189"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9756384/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"10423542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Changes over time were evaluated using repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and reliable change indices (RCIs). Then, correlations between dispositional mindfulness and distress/impairment outcomes were evaluated.

Results: At follow-up, aspects of burnout and several mindfulness skills demonstrated maintained improvements. RCIs showed that a higher percentage of participants improved on all outcomes at each time period than declined-all outcomes showed little to no deterioration. However, most participants did not reliably change, and this was more pronounced at the follow-up. Changes in two mindfulness skills (acting with awareness and nonjudging of inner experience) were consistently negatively correlated with distress and impairment outcomes.

Conclusions: Acquired mindfulness skills during MIHP were maintained at the follow-up. RCI analyses demonstrated that MIHP may protect against worsening stress and burnout during training. Two mindfulness skills, acting with awareness and nonjudging of inner experience, showed potential mechanistic effects on work-relevant outcomes. Booster sessions to encourage maintained mindfulness practices and skills should be investigated in future trials.
