El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo estudiar los cambios temporales en la composición, estructura y diversidad del zooplancton dulceacuícola en la ciénaga de Paredes y su relación con las variables ambientales durante el periodo de 2013 a 2014. Se trabajó con muestras zooplanctónicas depositadas en el Museo de Historia Natural UIS y se evaluó la estructura de la comunidad, usando los números efectivos de Hill y análisis de varianza para determinar si hay diferencias significativas en el pulso de inundación. El análisis de escalamiento multidimensional no métrico arrojó un valor de estrés bajo (0,073), las variables que presentaron valores estadísticamente significativos fueron transparencia, profundidad y conductividad. Los rotíferos fueron el grupo más representativo, estos organismos pudieron verse favorecidos por la tolerancia que presentan ante las fluctuaciones que se presentan en la columna de agua. Keratella americana y Lecane proiecta, fueron las especies más abundantes durante todo el periodo de estudio. Estas especies cosmopolitas son características de sistemas eutrofizados, con alta carga de nutrientes y materia orgánica, como lo que se observa en la ciénaga de Paredes. La diversidad específica disminuyó en comparación con un estudio anterior, lo que puede sugerir cambios en las características fisicoquímicas del agua. Se reportan quince nuevos registros para el departamento de Santander.","PeriodicalId":7319,"journal":{"name":"Acta Biológica Colombiana","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135405271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the aims of this research were to evaluate the antioxidant activity and quantify the phenolic compounds present in ethanolic (70% v/v) and aqueous extracts of Tinantia erecta, and to evaluate their antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi. The total phenol and flavonoid content and the in vitro antioxidant activity of extracts were assessed, and the phenolic compounds were quantified by HPLC. The extracts (250 μg mL–1) from T. erecta were tested for antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum, Phytophthora capsici, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Sclerotium rolfsii, and Rhizoctonia solani. The plant organ with the highest concentration of antioxidant compounds was the leaf, and the most efficient solvent for the extraction of these compounds was 70% ethanol. The phenolic compounds found in high concentrations were phloridzin (97.5 mg g–1), naringenin (19.3 mg g–1), and rutin (14.8 mg g–1). The extract obtained from leaves with 70% ethanol inhibited mycelial growth by 84 to 100%, with F. oxysporum being the least sensitive and R. solani being the most sensitive to the effect of the extract. The maximum percentage inhibition of the aqueous extracts was 15.6% against P. capsici. Extracts from the endemic species T. erecta exhibited good antioxidant activity, primarily due to the presence of phenolic compounds, and showed a great potential to inhibit phytopathogenic microorganisms.","PeriodicalId":7319,"journal":{"name":"Acta Biológica Colombiana","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135405275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, which might be the last healthy coral reef in the bay was found between Bocachica and Barú. Despite the unfavorable conditions for coral development, this reef exhibits an average coral cover of around 45 %. To study its fish diversity, inventories were made between 2015 and 2019, based on censuses during errant dives, band transects, photographs, and video recordings. A list of all fish species observed at Varadero reef, where 147 species belonging to 49 families have been recorded is presented; seven of those species (5%) are cataloged under threat. This study is the first approach to the fish diversity in this unusual reef, and a starting point for future studies that address the functionality and proper conservation of this ecosystem, currently threatened by projects that seek to dredge it.","PeriodicalId":7319,"journal":{"name":"Acta Biológica Colombiana","volume":"373 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135405110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We isolated and identified 64 bacterial morphospecies from rectal swabs from five captive black howler monkeys (CM) and 15 wild individuals (WM) from groups living in fragments with different compositions and vegetation structures (height, density, canopy width) in flooded and non-flooded areas. Low microbial diversity in CM and WM from the flooded area was observed while in WM from the non-flooded area, there was a higher microbial diversity and evenness. Free-ranging monkeys from different areas showed a significant difference in the replacement of morphospecies of gut microbiota (p = 0.0006); however, the bacterial communities are not differentiated as particular entities. The intestinal microbial community can be an indicator of howler monkeys’ health and habitat quality. The change in the composition of the plant community into small landscape scales, as well as fragmentation and natural heterogeneity of the landscape, can affect the intestinal microbial community of howler monkeys.","PeriodicalId":7319,"journal":{"name":"Acta Biológica Colombiana","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135405268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Los muestreos diurnos y nocturnos se realizaron mensualmente entre septiembre 2017 y agosto 2018. A cada individuo observado le registramos el sexo, la clase etaria y el microhábitat utilizado al momento del avistamiento. Las presas consumidas fueron extraídas mediante lavados estomacales in situ. Registramos un total de 437 individuos; 165 fueron adultos, 162 juveniles y 110 crías. Los microhábitats utilizados fueron roca, hojarasca, suelo, tronco, rama, hojas y raíz, de los cuales roca fue el más utilizado independientemente de la época del año y clases etarias. Se identificaron 21 órdenes de presas, 19 órdenes en hembras y 11 en machos. El índice de diversidad verdadera (1D), mostró valores similares para machos y hembras, con 9,67 y 9,08 respectivamente. El índice de distintividad taxonómica promedio (Δ+) determinó que las hembras consumen una mayor diversidad de presas que los machos, con 5,12 y 4,25, respectivamente. Thus, alternatives capable of lessening such effects become of great relevance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ascorbic acid dosage on This study aimed of marandu grass seeds submitted to different water conditions. After establishing the immersion time for seed conditioning based on the soakingcurve, the experiment was conducted to evaluate the physiological potential, in a 3x5 factorial scheme, composed of three osmotic potentials (0; -0.2 and -0.4 MPa) and five ascorbic acid doses (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 mM), with four repetitions. The germination, root protrusion, first germination count, germination speed index, root length and seedling shoots were evaluated. The physiological potential of the seeds was negatively affected by water stress induced by polyethylene glycol 6000, with deleterious effects on osmotic potentials -0.2 and -0.4 MPa. However, ascorbic acid conditioning at doses between 40 and 50 mM promoted improvements in seed germination performance and alleviated the harmful effects promoted by low water availability under the -0.2 MPa potential, stimulating tolerance to water stress. Improvements were also obtained in root and shoot growth of seedlings originated from seeds submitted to -0.4 MPa potential after conditioning.","PeriodicalId":7319,"journal":{"name":"Acta Biológica Colombiana","volume":"31 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135405272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Symbiotic relationships have been shown to be crucial in blueberry plants. In particular, phytohormone production by Pseudomonas fluorescens is an important mechanism of plant growth promotion. However, there are only a few reports on the effects of plant growth-promoting bacteria in blueberries. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effects of four strains of P. fluorescens (UM16, UM240, UM256, and UM270) and two types of slow-release fertilizer (nitrophosphate and basacote) on the development of blueberry var. Biloxi under greenhouse conditions. Blueberry seedlings obtained from in vitro culture and adapted under greenhouse conditions were inoculated with 1 x 106 CFU with any of the four strains, depending on treatment. Plants inoculated showed increased average plant length, plant fresh weight, root length, and root fresh and dry weight, compared with those with the control treatment (non-inoculated plants). The plants inoculated and fertilized with nitrophosphate had a better development compared with those fertilized with basacote or the control plants (inoculated or fertilized). Inoculated plants fertilized with nitrophosphate also had greater plant length, higher fresh plant weight, longer roots, and greater root fresh and dry weight than the control (non-inoculated or non-fertilized plants). Our study could facilitate the sustainable propagation of blueberry plants.","PeriodicalId":7319,"journal":{"name":"Acta Biológica Colombiana","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135405277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
