Although the latest research shows that it is safe for most patients to drink clear fluids 2-3 hours before a general anaesthetic many key staff are not aware of these findings. Characterised initially by muscle rigidity, increased body temperature and metabolic acidosis, the syndrome may prove fatal unless prompt, effective treatment is administered. It is estimated that 85% of these patients had otherwise survivable injuries. The aim of the project was to increase firefighters' skills in airway management techniques, to include the laryngeal mask airway (LMA), by providing theatre-based hospital placements under the supervision of a consultant anaesthetist.
