The symptoms of these lymphomas are commonly similar to benign inflammatory diseases and thus frequently lead to clinical misdiagnoses. Many consultations, including dermatological one, and repeated tissue biopsies are often necessary because of the coexistence of necrosis and inflammation in the tumors. Biopsies should be deep enough – punch biopsies are not recommended. The classification of lymphomas has undergone dramatic changes with the increasing understanding and progress in immunohistochemistry and molecular biology. We describe five patients with lymphomas of oral and nasal cavities: 2 derived from B-cells, 2 from T-cells, and 1 from NK/T-cells. The initial presentation of these diseases often suggests an inflammatory process, such as an odontogenic inflammation, sinusitis or benign inflammatory process.","PeriodicalId":7212,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Dermatology and Allergology/Postȩpy Dermatologii i Alergologii","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80500099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim: To analyze whether there are associations between levels of circulating IgA autoantibodies to epidermal (eTG) and tissue (tTG) transglutaminases, nonapeptides of gliadin (npG) and the intensity of cutaneous NE expression in patients with DH. Material and methods: Altogether, 31 patients with DH were studied. The levels of serum IgA autoantibodies to eTG, tTG and npG were evaluated with ELISAs. The intensity of NE expression was estimated with immunohistochem istry using NE monoclonal antibody and quantitative digital morphometry. Statistical analysis was done using Spear - man's rank correlation coefficient. Results: There were no statistically significant correlations between the intensity of cutaneous NE expression and the levels of serum IgA autoantibodies to eTG, tTG, npG in patients with DH. There were statistically significant cor - relations between the levels of IgA autoantibodies to eTG, tTG, npG. Conclusions: It seems that in human DH the activation of neutrophils, judged by the NE expression, is unrelated to the levels of serum IgA autoantibodies to eTG/tTG/npG, but all those autoantibodies in DH are produced in a coor - dinated way.","PeriodicalId":7212,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Dermatology and Allergology/Postȩpy Dermatologii i Alergologii","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76361631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim: Evaluation of the relationship between cosmetic problems and self-reported depression in individuals elect ing to undergo cosmetic procedures, sense of disease in these individuals as well as the relationship between selfreported disease and depression. Material and methods: Investigations using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Self-Esteem Scale (SES) were car ried out on 167 patients, before and 4 weeks after the procedure. Results: There is a statistically significant difference ( p < 0.001) between mean values of measurements before (9.3 points) and after (6.12 points) surgical procedures. The percentage of patients with different severity of depres sion before the procedure decreased from 42% to 18%. Using SES, the problem was assessed in the following cat egories: Obstacle, Challenge, Threat, Injustice, Benefit and Importance. The difference between mean scores before and following the intervention was 6.52 points and was statistically significant ( p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results obtained confirm that depression has an impact on self-reported disease and in the case of the investigated group it may be assumed that the aesthetic defect is a disease.","PeriodicalId":7212,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Dermatology and Allergology/Postȩpy Dermatologii i Alergologii","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87470541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, infection with HIV mediated by blood-derived preparations is practically impossible. HIV-specific antibodies pass through placenta to foetal blood, where they may persist till 18th month of life and, therefore, serological tests in children below this age may be falsely positive, which makes establishing a correct diagnosis more difficult. In Poland, only 10% of pregnant women undergo tests aimed to detect infection with HIV while in some Western countries such tests are performed in as many as 98% of pregnant women. During pregnancy in a HIV(+) woman, HIV blood load and number of Th CD4+ lymphocytes should be monitored. In Poland, compulsory tests for presence of HIV infection are performed in persons suspected of HIV infection/AIDS; newborns and infants, pregnant women, carriers and individuals in contact with the infected material.","PeriodicalId":7212,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Dermatology and Allergology/Postȩpy Dermatologii i Alergologii","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74721424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The SDSE shows a close relationship to Streptococcus pyogenes. The SDSE strains usually have a group G antigen, less commonly a group C one. Like S. pyogenes, most of SDSE strains can cause complete hemolysis (β-hemolysis) on a blood agar medium, and some of them possess the same A type of group-specific cell wall antigen. These common phenotype traits lead to confusion between both species. For this reason, microbiological diagnosis of streptococci should not be finished at the stage of serogrouping. A case of soft tissue infection of the left lower limb of a 30-year-old man is described. The etiological factor of the infection was β-hemolytic SDSE of group A. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests revealed that the strain is susceptible to penicillin, erythromycin, clindamycin and levofloxacin, while it is resistant to tetracycline. Treatment with first-generation cephalosporin (cefadroxil) was successfully applied, resulting in a complete remission of the infection symptoms.","PeriodicalId":7212,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Dermatology and Allergology/Postȩpy Dermatologii i Alergologii","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73852506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The risk of tubercular infection has been estimated to vary from 1% to 2% in developing countries. In the last years, an increased incidence of tuberculosis has been observed, which in countries with a high socio-economic status may be related to the HIV infection prevalence and population migration. The most frequent form of Mycobacteri um tuberculosis infection is tuberculosis of the respiratory system which in Poland accounts for 91.6% of cases. Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, which includes cutaneous tuberculosis, is rarely observed and its incidence is about 8.4%. With regard to the immunoreactivity or the PPD test and the presence of bacilli, three forms of cutaneous tuberculosis can be distinguished: anergic, reactive and hyperergic. The World Health Organization recommends isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, pyrazinamide and streptomycin as the first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs. This paper is a review of the available present knowledge concerning selected medications, their mechanisms of action and potential adverse effects. Moreover, therapeutic schemes for new tuberculosis patients are also presented.","PeriodicalId":7212,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Dermatology and Allergology/Postȩpy Dermatologii i Alergologii","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89295869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the high concentration of biological agents contained in dust grains, derived from conventional and organic cropping systems, there is a real risk of developing respiratory dis - eases in people doing agricultural work. Conventional and organic cropping systems differ significantly in terms of fertilization method and plant protection. Such differences may also influence the composition of biological agents in grain dust, which can cause various health effects in humans. No assessment has been carried out in farms with different systems of farming. Ambiguous statements on existing health risks in people doing agricul - tural work on conventional and organic farms prompted the Department of Allergy and Environmental Hazards, Institute of Rural Health in Lublin, to perform mycological tests and assess the degree of contamination with fun - gi pathogenic for humans in grain dust and grain from organic and conventional farms. A literature review and research conducted at the Institute of Rural Medicine show that the problem of occupational exposure to the pres - ence of molds and mycotoxins in grains and grain dusts and their possible role in the development of pathological changes of the respiratory system is very important from the standpoint of hygiene and occupational medicine, and still requires further studies.","PeriodicalId":7212,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Dermatology and Allergology/Postȩpy Dermatologii i Alergologii","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82031320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Healing of venous ulceration can be considered a therapeutic suc cess, particularly in the case of chronic wounds. The skin, weakened by many years of venous hypertension, becomes more susceptible to destruction, mechanical injuries, and the progression of the disease. Consequently, the appli cation of tertiary prevention becomes the basis for the prevention of venous hypertension, which can potentially lead to the reactivation of inflammation, trophic lesions, and destruction of tissues.","PeriodicalId":7212,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Dermatology and Allergology/Postȩpy Dermatologii i Alergologii","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83372555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Environmental allergens' penetration through the skin is facilitated by the skin barrier impairment what causes xerosis and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increase. As AD is a chronic disease, there are many factors responsible for exacerbations during the course of the disease, including environmental stress. Aim: Evaluation of the correlation between the level of psychological stress and epidermal barrier function in AD patients. Material and methods: Eight AD patients were included in the study during which two consultations were performed in one month's time. During each visit patients completed psychological questionnaires and had TEWL of unin - volved skin measured. The TEWL was also evaluated before and after the educational session which took place dur - ing the first visit. Results: The study did not show any statistically significant correlation between the level of psychological stress, epidermal barrier function (measured by TEWL) and AD severity both at the beginning of the study (before and after the educational session) and a month later (all p> 0.05). Conclusions: Negative observations could result from a small number of participants and a short follow-up period. However, consecutive studies excluding these limitations may play an important role in understanding the influ - ence of stress on the skin barrier in atopic dermatitis and have reliable clinical implications.","PeriodicalId":7212,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Dermatology and Allergology/Postȩpy Dermatologii i Alergologii","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72959403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
