Carbon fibre rod reinforced aluminium 6061 alloy metal matrix composite material was synthesized using the stir casting liquid metallurgy route. Aluminium based metal matrix composite materials are light in weight. Very few researchers were worked on carbon fibre rod reinforced metal matrix composites (MMC). Electroless nickel deposition on carbon fibre rods (2mm and 3mm diameter) were carried out for improvement in wettability. On carbon fibre rods, the effectiveness of electroless nickel coating was validated using SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and EDAX (Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy) analysis. A further coating thickness of nickel was improved using nickel electroplating. In a cast iron mould, nickel-coated carbon fibre rods were arranged in a circular pattern. Completely degassed molten aluminium 6061 alloy was poured in cast iron mould at 600-700 °C. The enhancement in Tribological and mechanical properties is always a prerequisite for technological advancement in automobile sector. From synthesized composites (11.11% Vol. CF and 25% Vol. CF reinforcement) specimen were prepared for density tests, bulk and microhardness tests, friction and wear tests. Synthesized composite has low density, increased bulk and microhardness, low coefficient of friction and reduced wear rate in comparison with aluminium 6061 alloy. The effect of this ionic liquid in the mixtures was evaluated to obtain a better dispersion of the charge in the epoxy matrix, and consequently the impact on the curing of the nanocomposites. The effectiveness of the dispersion was evaluated morphologically by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The non-covalent functionalization of nanotube nanocomposites (CNT) with IL resulted in better reinforcing effect and higher conductivity, as well as the use of high-speed speed mixer combined with acetone, culminated in better mixing and processing conditions. Under these conditions, the composite showed high electrical conductivity and good dynamic-mechanical properties. The systems with 10phr of the ionic liquid showed the highest of ΔH (heat of reaction), and these values can be attributed to the better adjustment of the stoichiometry, favoring the crosslinking of the resin. the systems with 10phr of the ionic liquid showed the highest of ΔH (heat of reaction), and these values can be attributed to the better adjustment of the stoichiometry, favoring the crosslinking of the resin. However, the systems prepared with 30phr of ionic liquid showed lower values of ΔH, possibly due to its excess in the mixture, culminating in the imbalance of resin/hardener stoichiometry. This can be seen in the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), whose sample cured with 30phr showed cracks, due to the excess of the crosslinking agent causing incomplete curing, making the material more fragile.","PeriodicalId":7184,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Engineering Forum","volume":"2 1","pages":"15 - 21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85726143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Laboratory as well as field tests are performed on the cookstoves. Experiments are performed on natural draft metal cookstove in laboratory at different air supply hole openings. Decrease in average input power and average thermal efficiency is observed between 3.74-3.43 kW and 31.14-29.45% respectively. Variation in average emission factor for carbon monoxide (CO) is found to be between 3.5-9.9 g/MJd. Emissions of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) are found to be varying between 1 ppm to 13.5 ppm without any specific trend. Experiments are performed on forced draft metal cookstove in laboratory on two fan speeds. The average input power and average thermal efficiency vary between 3.4-3.0 kW and 36.9-42.5% respectively. Variation in average emission factor for CO is found to be between 1.8-4.5 g/MJd and that of average NOx emissions between 16.8-2.5 ppm.During field tests, amount of fuel consumption and emissions of CO for both the cookstoves is compared with traditional cookstoves used by two families. In case of Family A, there is a saving in fuel consumption by 19% and 40% with natural draft and forced draft metal cookstoves respectively. The corresponding values for Family B are 5 % and 24% respectively. In case of Family A, there is decrease in CO emissions by 89% and 86% with natural draft and forced draft metal cookstoves respectively. Extracting these materials have negatively impacted on the environment, thus causing the depletion of mining sources. The cost implication of construction has also increased significantly causing a shortage of decent housing. This research investigates the strength properties of sandcrete blocks incorporated with maize straws. Sandcrete blocks (450 × 150 × 225 mm) were made with maize straws as constituent with a mix proportion of 1:4 (cement: sand). Thirty-six (36) sandcrete blocks were produced and their compressive strengths determined at 7, 21 and 28 days. The 28th day compressive strength of mixes containing 0, 5, 7.5 and 10% by volume of maize straws were 3.35 N/mm2, 2.57 N/mm2, 2.27 N/mm2 and 1.90 N/mm2 respectively. The 28 days strength of maize straw-sandcrete-blocks at 0 and 5% of maize straw generated the highest compressive strength and both results met up with the strength recommendation by the Nigerian Industrial Standard.","PeriodicalId":7184,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Engineering Forum","volume":"104 1","pages":"71 - 78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85480555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The wall consists of an inclined plate is considered according to a temperature as well as the volume fraction of the nanoparticles varying as the power of the axial coordinate. In addition, internal heat generation/absorption is taken into account in the mathematical formulation. The governing partial differential equations based on Buongiorno's approach are transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations. The two-level method of no-similarity equations is used to achieve higher accuracy. The whole calculation procedure is implemented using a limit value problem program written according to the Matlab computer language that applies the Lobbato IIIa finite difference method. The obtained results have revealed that small variations of the boundary conditions with the axial coordinate become very significant on the local Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number for nanoparticles. Moreover, a better heat transfer has been obtained with a larger S. However, a trade-off between desired heat transfer rate and level of reduced skin friction should be scheduled.","PeriodicalId":7184,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Engineering Forum","volume":"74 1","pages":"23 - 39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80172090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Control of micro-grids poses significant challenges that need to be addressed through advanced control techniques. This paper investigates an optimal control strategy that efficiently manages a stand-alone residential micro-grid comprising renewable and non-renewable energy sources. An adaptive model predictive control (AMPC) algorithm is implemented for choosing an optimal mode and set of inputs for the system to track both a constant and load-varying power demand profile. The problem to be solved by the AMPC control algorithm is to perform an optimal power reference tracking problem, where the consumption of energy from the diesel generator is minimized while maximizing the efficiency of the storage bank. The objective of the optimal control scheme is for the generation to meet the demand, minimize the use of fossil fuels and ensure the energy storage is always maintained around a nominal point such that it is not over-depleted. Therefore, the main goal is to maximize the use of renewable sources and minimize traditional sources. The design and simulation of the plant model and the AMPC controller are carried out on the MATLAB/Simulink environment.","PeriodicalId":7184,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Engineering Forum","volume":"11 1","pages":"55 - 70"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89957857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of these formulas have been developed using laboratory data, estimated from simplified scaled-down models. This led to uncertainties and considerable inaccuracies in the scour estimation, sometimes causing serious consequences for the stability of structures subject to scour. These formulas were rarely tested using field data, where, until recently, there was very little data to validate them. This study aims to propose a new local scour formula using multiple nonlinear regression (MNLR). The data used is in situ data from an extensive database. The new proposed formula includes different parameters of the three fields involved in the triggering and development of the local scour, namely; the bridge, the flow, and the suspended characteristic of the eroded particle. The results obtained in the training phase and the validation show relatively better performances of the new formula compared to the existing empirical formulas.","PeriodicalId":7184,"journal":{"name":"Advanced Engineering Forum","volume":"61 1","pages":"57 - 64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86248498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
