An explicit aim of the Australian Curriculum: Science is to ensure that students develop an ability to “make informed, evidence-based decisions about current and future applications of science while taking into account ethical and social implications of decisions”. For example, in primary-school year 1, students are required to identify ways that science knowledge is used in the care of the local environment such as animal habitats, and suggest changes to parks and gardens to better meet the needs of native animals. At higher year levels, students are required to describe how scientific arguments, as well as ethical, economic and social arguments, are used to make decisions regarding personal and community issues, among other things. Four “snapshots” of the Australian Curriculum are discussed in this Chapter as examples of social responsibility aspects of professional ethics being embedded in primary and secondary school. Resources for teachers are discussed.","PeriodicalId":7028,"journal":{"name":"ACS Symposium Series","volume":"1 1","pages":"13-40"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147917600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
