A comparative study was performed to evaluate catalyst performance in both actual engine exhaust and the simulated gas under the same flow conditions. The test using actual exhaust gas test showed that despite the lower exhaust temperatures during low load operation, the catalyst exhibited an extremely high performance, achieving approximately 100% CH4 conversion. In contrast, at high load, despite high exhaust temperatures, the CH4 conversion was decreased to 50-60%. In the simulated gas test showed that the catalyst’ activity was declined with increasing concentration of H2O and NO, whereas it was improved by CH4 and CO oxidation. The results showed that high CH4 concentrations under low load conditions enhanced catalyst activity owing to the exothermic reaction, which increased the catalyst temperature despite the low exhaust temperature and the presence of H2O vapour. Furthermore, during actual engine operation, the catalytic performance at a high load was improved by controlling the air excess ratio.","PeriodicalId":70259,"journal":{"name":"内燃机","volume":"227 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76733078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Momentum flux distributions at several distances from the nozzle orifice exit are measured by a force sensor with a small-diameter aperture which traverses a cross-section. A theoretical momentum flux profile is determined by fitting with the measured momentum flux profile at the cross-section. The spray velocity profile and equivalence ratio profiles are quantified from the theoretical momentum flux profile. By interpolating the profiles of the measured cross-sections, the axis-symmetrical diesel spray flame model can calculate the equivalence ratio and other physical values as a function of the distance from the nozzle exit ( x) and the radius from the spray axis ( r). The equivalence ratio distribution in a cross-section involving the spray axis is converted into soot formation and oxidation distribution by coupling with the improved soot ϕ -T map. The conventional soot-NOx ϕ -T map did not show the borderline between the soot formation and oxidation. To quantify the residence time of the fuel element during soot formation, the narrow soot peninsula was expanded up to its maximum by replacing the soot yield with the soot particle diameter. Instead of contour lines for the of NO mole fraction, contour lines for the OH mole fraction were implemented to reveal the border between soot formation and soot oxidation on the ϕ -T map. The borderline appears clearly, consisting of a horizontal line in the lower-temperature region and a rising line in the higher-temperature region. The converted soot formation and oxidation regions in the axis-symmetric spray flame model exhibit a strong correlation with the measured soot distributions in a quasi-steady diesel spray flame. The shear-stress, which induces turbulence affecting soot formation/oxidation, is also quantified from the velocity distribution.","PeriodicalId":70259,"journal":{"name":"内燃机","volume":"81 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83867948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mobility needs are continuously growing with increase in population. All these factors will lead to an upsurge in the energy demand for the mobility in the very next future. Consequently, the diversification of low carbon energy sources is urgently required. Hydrogen can be used for mobility solution in its two energy conversion mechanisms: The Fuel Cell technology or the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). The latter option, studied in the present work, offers the advantages of current fossil fuel engines – existing and proven technology, lifetime, controlled cost – with a very low carbon footprint. The overall objective of the study is to define the specifications of a dedicated Hydrogen direct injection combustion system for ground transportation application with the best fuel efficiency and lower raw emissions, to minimize the aftertreatment needs. A complete experimental and numerical study was carried out to get valuable information on various phenomena occurring throughout the engine cycle. The very first step of the study consisted in performing experimental investigations. For this purpose, an all metal single cylinder engine originally designed for gasoline spark ignited combustion (tumble air motion, gasoline direct injection) was modified for hydrogen direct injection combustion. The gas-gas injection was experimentally studied in the High Pressure/High Temperature vessel available at IFPEN. Those experiments were used to calibrate the 3D CFD numerical approach. Based on a 0D pre-study (boundary conditions) and using the injection modeling calibration introduced before, 3D CFD simulations have been then carried out with specific hydrogen kinetics properties. Finally, this comprehensive study highlights the specificities of ICE running with hydrogen. It provides indications and guidelines for further developments and optimization of hydrogen combustion engines.","PeriodicalId":70259,"journal":{"name":"内燃机","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76729598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For diesel engines, premixed charge compression ignition (PCI) combustion has been proposed as a combustion method that can achieve high thermal efficiency and clean emissions simultaneously. However, the application of PCI combustion remains limited to the light load range of certain mass-produced engines as it is difficult to control ignition timing and combustion noise. In this study, we developed a new combustion concept, Distribution Controlled partially Premixed Compression Ignition (DCPCI), which enables partially premixed combustion in medium load ranges by spatially controlling fuel mixture distribution. With this DCPCI combustion, we aim for highly efficient and clean combustion by suppressing the interference between the burned gas produced by the earlier stage injection and the subsequent spray with the use of a dual-zone combustion chamber and multi-stage injection. The effectiveness of the new combustion concept was validated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses, and the improvement in thermal efficiency was confirmed by engine experiments.","PeriodicalId":70259,"journal":{"name":"内燃机","volume":"40 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78991010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
