It is a source more detailed than a simple handbook, yet not so ponderous as to be unwieldy as is the usual dermatology text. The Structure of the Skin introduces the book. The well-chosen words relating the structural components to their function give life to the anatomy which might otherwise, in spite of the well-labeled photographs, have been a chapter to skip over. The author includes a section on \"Laboratory Procedures and Tests,\" including the skin tests, fungus examinations, and biopsies. He discusses what is meant by the primary and secondary lesions, and shows how the location of a dermatological condition, the season of the year, the age, race, and military status of the patient play an important part in making a diagnosis. In chickenpox it is perhaps the most uncommon complication1to be encountered. We wish to report a case of encephalitis complicating chickenpox. The child died two and a half years after the onset of the illness, of encephalitis. In all of recorded medical literature, we found no case which survived for such a long time. Because of the protracted length of the illness, the case could be studied intensively. The chemical changes in the blood were many and varied, so that various diagnoses were entertained, then dismissed. The many investigations undertaken are recorded, and the final autopsy findings included. Report of Case The patient was a 3-year-old boy, brought into the office at noon, June 29, 1954. The chief complaint was sudden onset of respiratory distress, excessive thirst, and drowsiness of four hours' duration. The dearth of information concerning growth of the head has been especially felt as more attention is focused on early recognition and relief of hydrocephaly, subdural hematoma, and other lesions manifested by increase in intracranial bulk. Material available at the Children's Hospital of Michigan has consequently been studied with reference chiefly to variations in head circumference and the relation of this dimension to increasing body length. Subsequent data were obtained from that portion of the nursery group followed in the premature clinic of our outpatient department.
