This effect of Rh-antibodies on Rh-positive red cells was reproduced in artificial mixtures of antigen plus antibody in vitro.2We speculated then about the possible mechanism of this effect. The purpose of the present study is to try to elucidate further this effect. It has been known for many years that most of the glycolytic activity of whole blood, in vitro, is due to erythrocyte metabolism. Because a disturbance of such glycolysis might reveal other evidence of metabolic defect in the erythrocytes coated with anti-Rh antibodies, the following studies were undertaken: Measurement of rate of glycolysis in blood drawn from 10 infants with erythroblastosis due to Rh incompatibility (with a positive Coombs test) compared with blood from 10","PeriodicalId":6974,"journal":{"name":"A.M.A. journal of diseases of children","volume":"143 1","pages":"202-205"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1960-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80248439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To those responsible for the health of the child there is the challenge of helping the child and mother to master this difficult experience.* Often it appears that the hospital provides for the physical needs of the child and opposes or deals harshly with his psychological needs. When hospitalization is planned as a therapeutic measure, one avoids the limited view that it is suitable for young children if psychological trauma is avoided. Indeed, the personnel of the modern hospital often is able to create an environment in which certain children for a short time can deal with their physical and emotional needs better than at home. Review of the literature since the appearance of Wilmer's1excellent and comprehensive article in 1938 shows that this condition has been reported almost exclusively in the urologic literature, while only a very occasional report has appeared in the pediatric journals.2-4 For these reasons, and because we wish to emphasize the existence of this anomaly in differential diagnostic considerations, we feel that it is worth while to report the following case. Report of Case A 7-month-old white female infant was admitted to the Roger Williams General Hospital on Dec. 5, 1958, suffering from fever, cough, and coryza. Her family history was irrelevant. She remained in the hospital for a month after birth, where her progress was satisfactory.","PeriodicalId":6974,"journal":{"name":"A.M.A. journal of diseases of children","volume":"50 1","pages":"86-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1960-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77704678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
