Nicastro","doi":"10.1201/9780429424441-278","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1201/9780429424441-278","url":null,"abstract":"Glass Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) is nowadays a common practice in tunnelling; they are used in several applications as provisional structures, in a safe and cost effective way. Classical example is the so called “soft eye” where a TBM has to pass. GFRP bars have a much higher tensile strength than steel rebars, they are easily machined and can be broken down into small pieces by the cutter head and can then be transported by the conveyor system together with the spoil. We’ll describe other different applications of this kind of material as structural elements in the conventional tunnelling, manual constructed reinforcement cages in big launching shafts, ending in special products in the railway industry, where the anti-galvanic corrosion properties are unique. The possibility of adopting a hybrid solution of FRC tunnel segments with GFRP reinforcement is investigated herein. Full-scale tests were carried out on FRC segments with and without GFRP cage, with a typical geometry of metro tunnels In particular, both flexural and point load full-scale tests were carried out, for the evaluation of the structural performances (both in terms of structural capacity and crack pattern evolution) under bending, and under the TBM thrust. This paper will provide an overview of the lessons learnt and proposed design principle. The behaviour of fibre reinforced concrete is more than a simple superposition of the characteristics of the concrete matrix and the fibres. A unique concept of fibre has been developed which combined: high tensile strength + perfect anchorage (double hook) + ductile wire. This unique post cracking behaviour has been used to design very innovative solution. Three projects will be presented in this paper: the inner lining of Lee Tunnel in UK submit to internal pressure, the Jansen Mine shaft in Canada where shaft walls are slip formed and CIP tunnel in Turkey.
