Three reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transitions have been examined and four phases (high-, room-, medium- and low-temperature phase, HTP, RTP, MTP and LTP, respectively) have been structurally determined: HTP (at 350 K, P21/a, Z = 24), RTP (290 K, P overline{1}, Z = 12), MTP (205 K, P21/a, Z = 4) and LTP (100 K, P overline{1}, Z = 24). Various puckering modes of the 1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinane ring of the organic cyclic phosphate anion have been revealed in the crystal: chair and skew. The chair ↔ skew ring flipping, which has been shown to take place during the phase transitions, results in various populations of skew and chair conformers in different phases. The flexibility in the coordination geometry of ammonium cations is considered to assist in the conformational flexibility of the dioxaphosphorinane ring.","PeriodicalId":6887,"journal":{"name":"Acta Crystallographica Section B Structural Crystallography and Crystal Chemistry","volume":"2015 1","pages":"117-125"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87949874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The book is very well planned and well written, with a comprehensive introduction to nanosize scale materials and the chemistry of polymeric materials. An in-depth explanation of the basic properties of polymers helps the reader to refresh knowledge acquired during university courses, and is a very good introduction to further content, especially various methods of fiber formation, with understandable and clear schematics which are essential to fully understand nanofiber formation and their advantages and limits. The chapter on nanofiber technology describes briefly methods of nanofiber production, with special focus on the electrospinning method, and emphasis placed on the influence of process parameters on fiber formation and diameter. Comprehensive knowledge about process parameters is essential when using the electrospinning method. Fiber formation by electrospinning depends on many various parameters, interacting together in many combinations. The work presented updates progress on understanding these dependencies and gives an explanation of the methodology of modelling and electrospinning simulation which still have not been fully understood. The authors of this work focus on the methods of characterization and test nanofibrous materials which have been divided very intuitively. The reader will learn about ways of characterizing polymeric materials with a number of useful examples of satisfying or unsatisfying results like spectra, visualizations and graphs. The principles of every method described in the book are also explained in a very approachable way. Characterization methods are presented in accordance with recent research, which shows the reader how to apply those methods in the laboratory and how to interpret the results. Electrospun polymeric fibers have been investigated extensively for the last decade. A large number of various polymeric materials were used to create nanofibrous sheets in various forms. In this work, the authors summarized the most recent research in bioactive nanofibers, electroactive fibers and nanocomposite fibrous materials. Fiber research has been extensively studied in recent years, and has a high potential for commercialization in the near future. In particular, the presented bioactive properties of nanofibers showed the methodology and possible future areas of development that researchers may be interested in. Nevertheless, the drug delivery section could be extended by including the electrospraying technique, which becomes a complementary method of creating polymeric drug delivery systems. The electroactive properties of nanofibers result from their chemical composition and dimensions. The discovery of carbon nanotubes in 1991 revealed a huge potential for the production of electroconductive and","PeriodicalId":6887,"journal":{"name":"Acta Crystallographica Section B Structural Crystallography and Crystal Chemistry","volume":"81 1","pages":"244-245"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79695352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The acronyms are listed in alphabetical order in tabular form within the three columns ‘acronym’, ‘code’ and ‘english translation; german translation’. The code (greek letters , , , d, \", , , ) allows for the assignment to the categories ‘analytical methods and phenomena’, ‘equipment’, ‘terms’ for the field (1), ‘preparation techniques and phenomena’, ‘functional and structural units’, ‘electronic signal processing and techniques’ for field (2), and ‘crystals’, ‘materials’ for field (3). Some acronyms have more than one distinct meaning which are all listed in alphabetic order, e.g. for the acronym AP one finds 42 translations, ranging from ‘absorbable organic halogen; absorbierbares organisches Halogen’ to ‘all points; alle Punkte’ and ‘azimuthal projection; azimutale Projektion’ all in the category ‘terms’. As can be inferred from this example, the author does not want to prioritize or critically evaluate the acronyms, but has the intention to simply list them and provide a database for the helpless reader in front of (sometimes certainly useless) abbreviations. Completeness is not claimed by the author acknowledging the ever increasing number of such acronyms. However, the listing is quite extensive and there is a good chance of finding the acronym one is puzzled by. I agree with the author that compared to searching online for the meaning of an acronym, which often returns a flood of results, the book has the advantage of limiting explanations to those relevant to the three fields listed above. Furthermore, due to the alphabetical organization access within the book is fast. Overall this book is certainly useful to those who repeatedly encounter unexplained acronyms. It might be especially helpful for researchers needing to access literature outside their own discipline and thus often confronted with unfamiliar ‘language’.","PeriodicalId":6887,"journal":{"name":"Acta Crystallographica Section B Structural Crystallography and Crystal Chemistry","volume":"123 3 1","pages":"124-124"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80217303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a compilation of 300 problems that had been designed by the authors for teaching inorganic chemistry courses, either as take-home assignments or examination questions. Notwithstanding the focus on structural aspects of inorganic chemistry indicated in the title the scope is much broader. The topics covered comprise Atomic and Molecular Electronic States, Atomic Orbitals, Hybrid Orbitals, Molecular Symmetry, Molecular Geometry and Bonding, Crystal Field Theory, Molecular Orbital Theory, Vibrational Spectroscopy, and Crystal Structure. Yet the central theme running through these topics is symmetry, molecular or crystalline. Helpful appendices, a bibliography with 150 citations, and a subject index complete the text. The origins of the book go back to the early 80s when the first version of this compilation, entitled Problems in Inorganic and Structural Chemistry, was published by T. C. W. Mak, K. Y. Hui, O. W. Lan and W.-K. Li. During decades of practical use it has been revised and updated. The renowned senior authors Thomas Chung Wai Mak and Wai-Kee Li are now Emeritus Professors of Chemistry. In this sequel book their great expertise in inorganic and physical chemistry is complemented by Yu-San Cheung and Kendrew Kin Wah Mak who are teaching physical and organic chemistry at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Indeed, the optimization by generations of students and the extension to further aspects of chemistry resulted in a wide range of clearly formulated, challenging problems along with their solutions and helpful explanations. This mature workbook allows students to profoundly test their knowledge in several essential fields of chemistry. The outstanding quality of the content, the high quality printing and the affordable paperback edition make Problems in Structural Inorganic Chemistry highly attractive for students and instructors especially in inorganic and physical chemistry.","PeriodicalId":6887,"journal":{"name":"Acta Crystallographica Section B Structural Crystallography and Crystal Chemistry","volume":"18 1","pages":"418-418"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83431947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
