Transreading integrates four components: lento reading, poetic translation, cultural hermeneutics, and creative writing; its principles can be distilled from the methods employed by trailblazers in trans-lingual, trans-continental, and trans-era dialogue. As will be demonstrated, transreading, when incorporated into the classroom—even the classroom with a homogenous student body—promotes multilingual and multicultural perspectives. In Part 1, a teacher describes how transreading enables her effectively to introduce philosopher-poet Olav H. Hauge to non-Norwegian audiences, while showcasing student responses in the journey to decoding Hauge's intellectual collages. In Part 2, three students share their individual transreadings of Laozi, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche. This panoramic picture of its academic, pedagogic, and artistic applications establishes how transreading benefits scholars, educators, and students alike by combining proven techniques that enable cross-cultural critique with deeper understanding.","PeriodicalId":68660,"journal":{"name":"高教研究与实践","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74294874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the various grammar items, the English passive, especially in the written form, is a pre-requisite for academic success in higher education. This chapter reports the findings of a corpus research study on the difficulties faced by Chinese learners of English in learning English passive. This study proposed that four major factors that contribute to the difficulties for Chinese learners in learning English passive. Two corpora containing written academic essays by Chinese learners of English who were mainly undergraduates were selected in this study for analysis. Data from two corpora were extracted and analysed, and results from both sources provide support to most of the types of difficulties proposed in this study. Based on the results of this study, four recommendations are offered.","PeriodicalId":68660,"journal":{"name":"高教研究与实践","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75202083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter presents the experience and perspective of a teacher educator who taught a teacher preparation course in the area of school psychology and was required to infuse English language learner (ELL) content in the course. The work focuses on the teacher educator's sense making of infusing the content based on her own personal and professional experiences and beliefs. Findings highlight the important role of personal experiences and beliefs and the active position of general education teacher educators in preparing teachers for culturally and linguistically diverse learners. Implications for professional development are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":68660,"journal":{"name":"高教研究与实践","volume":"60 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74107409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This disrupted the normal instructional routine leaving institutions with only one option: e-learning. E-learning is a technological pedagogy that supports teaching and learning using electronic mail, the internet, the world wide web and can either be synchronous or asynchronous. Today's multilingual technology has gone beyond the question of which language dominates the educational space. The acknowledgment and accommodation of heteroglossic perspectives in e-learning rejects engraved ideologies that posit monolingualism as a norm in education. It further justifies acknowledging that multilingualism is not new, even if the dramatic secularisation of the term seems recent. Through sociolinguistic lens embedded in the funds of knowledge, this chapter seeks to explore the role language plays in e-learning and how educators can use multilingualism as a teaching/learning resource.","PeriodicalId":68660,"journal":{"name":"高教研究与实践","volume":"106 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79034180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chapter aims to address the linguistic gap in a tourism training institution and tourism establishments to respond to the language skills needed by the tourism industry. The Forever Resort Academy course information and job advertisement will be analysed to assess the commitment of the institution to address the language gap. The efforts of tourism businesses and their willingness to address language gaps in the tourism industry were examined through semi-structured interviews with 15 tourism businesses in the Gariep Dam, inclusive of owners and managers. The chapter draws on Halliday's genre theory and Bhatia's interdiscursivity theory in understanding the importance of language for tourism purposes. This chapter encourages tourism training institutions to prepare graduates adequately by focusing more on the language aspect if they wish to produce tourism graduates that can compete in the global tourism market.","PeriodicalId":68660,"journal":{"name":"高教研究与实践","volume":"77 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83863715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The course focused on developing knowledge, skills, and attitudes to prepare the participants for working professionally as mother-tongue teachers of Russian and to be involved in the development of the subject. The main purpose was to bring together relevant knowledge from research, provide necessary cultural competence, and create an atmosphere for open reflection. The ambition was that the course participants would understand that the way they teach and the choices they make should be aligned with previous research. The results suggest that the participants had very different perspectives on their role as a teacher as a result of their cultural background. This role became much clearer with the help of reflection with colleagues.","PeriodicalId":68660,"journal":{"name":"高教研究与实践","volume":"70 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89368764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also delves into how such L1 use is enacted into the classroom depicting when and for what purposes. This study was of a mixed method using both qualitative and quantitative approach. For this purpose, two different instruments were employed to collect the relevant data: an interview and a questionnaire. Subjects of the study consist of 476 randomly selected EFL university students and a sample of 20 EFL university professors. Results show that though the attitudes of the teachers and the students about using L1 were different, still, all participants assumed having used L1 for specific reasons.","PeriodicalId":68660,"journal":{"name":"高教研究与实践","volume":"232 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89248861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines EMI practices in the Anglophone and non-Anglophone contexts through surveying EMI teachers' perceptions of the issues related to content and language pedagogy. Through comparing these perceptions, the chapter reveals different understanding of the EMI concept as well as different implementation of the instructional practices in the two contexts, which stems from cultural, educational, and social distinctions. The participants of the research were 129 university content lecturers from the UK and EMI teachers from Ukraine. The survey contained nine questions that elicited the respondents' views on the relevance of the skills the students have to obtain and the tasks that the students are required to do while taking up the EMI course.","PeriodicalId":68660,"journal":{"name":"高教研究与实践","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87924562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
