For a decision-support system it is important to be able to reverse-engineer the impact of features on the final decision outcome. In the medical domain, such functionality is typically required to allow applying machine learning to clinical decision making. In this paper, we present initial experiments that have been performed on in-vivo gastral images obtained from capsule endoscopy. Quantitative analysis has been performed to evaluate the utility of the proposed method. Convolutional neural networks have been used for training the validating of the image data set to provide the bleeding classifications. The visual explanations have been provided in the images to help health professionals trust the black box predictions. While the paper focuses on the in-vivo gastral image use case, most findings are generalizable.","PeriodicalId":6696,"journal":{"name":"2019 Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA)","volume":"4 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75512433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Either intentionally or by accident, crime scene contamination can occur during the investigation and documentation process. This new proposed methodology utilises an ASIFT-based feature detection algorithm that compares pre- and post-contaminated images of the same scene, taken from different viewpoints. The contention is that the ASIFT registration technique is better suited to real world crime scene photography, being more robust to affine distortion that occurs when capturing images from different viewpoints. The proposed methodology was tested with both the SIFT and ASIFT registration techniques to show that (1) it could identify missing, planted and displaced objects using both SIFT and ASIFT and (2) ASIFT is superior to SIFT in terms of error in displacement estimation, especially for larger viewpoint discrepancies between the pre- and post-contamination images. This supports the contention that our proposed methodology in combination with ASIFT is better suited to handle real world crime scene photography.","PeriodicalId":6696,"journal":{"name":"2019 Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA)","volume":"252 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91007865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach is applied to the data set covering the state of Queensland, Australia. This dataset consists of a time series of high resolution (3m2) RGB satellite image mosaics each comprised of approximately 95,000 image tiles. The low number (3) of spectral bands combined with the large and diverse geographic area create a variety of challenges for change detection. Image segmentation followed by random forest regression was used to create ranked lists of image tiles containing potential change. The overall approach is conceptually similar to a document retrieval problem in which potentially relevant tiles are displayed to users for inspection. Promising initial results were obtained measured using precision and recall.","PeriodicalId":6696,"journal":{"name":"2019 Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA)","volume":"5 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79181881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The challenges are magnified by low resolution of input images and partial occlusion of the face in existing datasets. In recent years, using facial components to conduct gender classification and using deeper convolutional neural networks has both achieved high accuracy and recognition. This analysis paper examines the effect of using deeper convolutional neural networks trained on separate facial components and the results are compared with the state-of-the-art gender classification techniques. We also investigate the effects of network settings and parameters surrounding convolutional neural networks, how they affect the overall classification and provide insights into age-related gender classification. The results show that the proposed technique is promising and performs better with larger crop sizes. Our experiments suggest that the proposed technique can classify gender well from mouth, nose and face (less eyes) only.","PeriodicalId":6696,"journal":{"name":"2019 Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA)","volume":"26 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77872474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a part-based method is proposed for aggregating local features from multiple video frames. A pre-trained Fast R-CNN model is used to extract local convolutional layer features from the regions of interest (ROIs) of training images. These features are then clustered to locate representative parts. A set cover problem is formulated to select the discriminative parts, which are further refined by fine-tuning the Fast R-CNN. Local convolutional layer features and fully-connected layer features are extracted using the fine-tuned Fast R-CNN model, and then aggregated separately from a video segment to form two feature representations. They are concatenated into a global feature representation. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms several state-of-the-art features on two dynamic scene datasets.","PeriodicalId":6696,"journal":{"name":"2019 Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA)","volume":"148 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88653665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two of the most important challenges are foggy and blurred scenes. In this work we make a comparison between two of the most powerful methods in semantic segmentation. These techniques are DeepLabv3+ and PSPNet which achieve the highest mIoU and approximately close to each other on the Cityscapes dataset testing using both fine and coarse data for training. DeebLabv3+ and PSPNet achieved an accuracy of 82.1 % and 81.2% on Cityscapes test set respectively. Effective monitoring of rotary kilns is therefore crucial to the successful operation in order to optimise the flame and reduce waste. In this industrial application-driven work, we describe such a system recently developed and successfully deployed. Our work aims at efficient real-time performance and accuracy for given operating constraints. Our contributions include novel methods that provide accurate depth calibration and mapping, detect and segment the flame, and estimate the flame bed position accurately in challenging conditions. For preprocessing, we use a multi-frame approach and carefully select an optimal window size. Then, we derive a mathematical model for depth calibration and mapping of the kiln and demonstrate the accuracy of the model. Finally, we propose a comprehensive pipeline for segmenting and detecting flame and provide an in-depth analysis of our method. Our evaluation shows that the proposed system performs well and meet real-time requirements whilst using only low-cost hardware.","PeriodicalId":6696,"journal":{"name":"2019 Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA)","volume":"202 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77008178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A radiologist provides a complete description of a medical image in the form of radiology report by describing normal or abnormal findings and providing a summary for decision making. Research shows that the radiology practice is error-prone due to the limited number of experts, increasing patient volumes, and the subjective nature of human perception. To reduce the number of diagnostic errors and to alleviate the task of radiologists, there is a need for a computer-aided report generation system that can automatically generate a radiology report for a given medical image. We propose an encoder-decoder based framework that can automatically generate radiology reports from medical images. Specifically, we use a Convolutional Neural Network as an encoder coupled with a multi-stage Stacked Long Short-Term Memory as a decoder to generate reports. We perform experiments on the Indiana University Chest X-ray collection, a publicly available dataset, to measure the effectiveness of our model. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our model in automatically generating radiology reports from medical images.","PeriodicalId":6696,"journal":{"name":"2019 Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84169788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Natural language is an intuitive way for humans to interact with robots. However, enabling robots to comprehend natural language, and correctly interpret spatial references, is challenging for two reasons. Firstly, phrases must be semantically represented in structures that can be processed computationally; secondly correspondences must be found to map these structures to models that represent objects, relationships and actions in the environment. Recently neural networks have demonstrated a strong potential to address both challenges, most notably in the context of Visual Question Answering (VQA) where they have performed well at answering natural language questions about images. However, the state-of-the-art networks for VQA tasks are not directly applicable to robotic applications. They do not support interfaces suitable for integration with a robotic system and most have a limited capacity to interpret spatial phrases. In this paper we present a neural network architecture trained on synthetic data and evaluated on synthetic and real data. It correctly interprets referring spatial relationships in phrases such as the one above and provides a modular interface that allows a robot to localise an object in the environment from such a phrase.","PeriodicalId":6696,"journal":{"name":"2019 Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA)","volume":"31 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84214438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as audio recordings are opaque, obtaining meaningful information from them is a challenging task. Calculating summary indices from recordings is one way to reduce the size of audio data, but the amount of information of summary indices is still too big. (2) Method: In this study we explore the application of social network analysis to visually and quantitatively model acoustic changes. To achieve our aim, we clustered summary indices using two algorithms, and the results were used to generate network maps. (3) Results and Discussion: The network maps allowed us to visually perceive acoustic changes in a day and to visually compare one day to another. To enable quantitative comparison, we also calculated summary values from the social network maps, including Gini coefficient (an economical concept adopted to estimate how unevenly the occurrences are distributed). (4) Conclusion: Social network maps and summary values provide insight into acoustic changes within an environment visually and quantitatively.","PeriodicalId":6696,"journal":{"name":"2019 Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83109699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
