However this also leads to more complicated coupling and more difficulties of parameter measurement. This paper proposes a new and experiment-based method for BDFIG parameter estimation. With this method, currents and voltages under several simple and stable conditions are measured and the parameters required for modeling and control can be calculated. This paper discusses the basic principles and the estimation process of the proposed method in detail. A group of experiment data from a 64kW BDFIG is also used to illustrate the estimation procedure. The estimated parameters are then substituted into the mathematical simulation model and compared with the experimental results. Both steady and dynamic waveforms are well matched, which implies the accuracy of the estimated parameters. The proposed method could also be applied to other types of machines to achieve better control.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"10 1","pages":"2800-2804"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82265114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The automatic current sharing mechanism is inherent to the series capacitor buck topology and uniquely utilizes its series capacitor. Unlike conventional multiphase buck converters, current sharing is achieved without any current sensing circuits or added external control loops. Analysis of the automatic current sharing mechanism explains its robustness to variations in inductance, dc resistance (DCR), and temperature. Unequal control switch on-times are found to have measurable impact on sharing accuracy. Results from a two-phase, 12 V input, 10 A output hardware prototype demonstrate the simple, highly accurate current sharing capabilities of the series capacitor buck converter. Experimental results for unequal on-times exhibit unmatched average currents but stable operation with a dc offset.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"2003-2009"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83971525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, problems of varied magnetic coupling caused by coil misalignment still limit its practical applications. Besides improvements of inductive chargers, the EV manufacturers need a standard on the power-receiving part for adaptive charging in various conditions. Accordingly, this paper proposes design of an on-board charger, which cooperates with the previously proposed universal inductive charger (UIC), for more universal, efficient and safe EV charging in various coupling and load conditions. The optimal design of the secondary LC circuit and the receiving pad is provided. A simple and low-cost control method based on the dual-mode operation of the DC-DC converter is applied, to coordinate with the UIC for more accurate control on the frequency and voltage. Simulation results and a prototype validate the proposed on-board charger is robust and applicable, and performs better for universal inductive charging.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"86 17 1","pages":"4544-4549"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84010350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Battery energy storage at the residential level has also become critical due to the increased adoption of residential scale PV. This paper proposes a new micro-inverter topology with integrated energy storage for PV applications. The proposed topology has a structure similar to that of a flying capacitor multilevel inverter, with reduced switch count. This provides advantages such as design simplicity while being more cost effective than existing topologies. A unique control scheme is also proposed in this paper, which mitigates PV intermittencies while also optimizing battery utilization. The proposed topology and control technique are verified by simulation for a residential scale micro-inverter rated 230 W. The simulation results validate the micro-inverter operation and the control methodology.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"43 1","pages":"3455-3461"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80231789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One for switching loss minimization and one for switching loss reduction with the neutral point voltage controllability. Due to the current commutation characteristics if Vienna rectifiers, the available space voltage vectors are limited. With this consideration, different small vectors are selected for different performance optimization. The detailed implementation of the two modulation methods are presented. System performance with the proposed two modulation methods are compared with one commonly used discontinuous PWM modulation method in the aspects of semi-conductor loss and neutral point voltage ripple. The analysis is verified through both simulations and experiments based on a 3 kW Vienna rectifier with efficiency higher than 99% at nominal load.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"7 1","pages":"225-232"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81335873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two main control objectives are: to put the closed loop poles in predefined locations;and to track the reference signal. The reference signal tracking problem is solved using the internal model principle. It introduces the reference generating polynomial into the controller design problem. The controller gives zero steady state error at specific frequency points and also satisfies other performance requirements using the sufficient free parameters. It also shown that the PRES controller is a particular case of the proposed controller. The design method is applied to the PRES controller for a single-phase grid-connected voltage source inverter using a LCL filter. Simulation examples and robustness tests are provided to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. Hardware-in-the-loop simulations using the OPAL-RT real-time simulator with the dSPACE controller are also provided.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"16 1","pages":"5145-5152"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81365560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the published literatures, the relation among LCL parameters, capacitor current feedback and resonance damping was discussed; however, their relation with the low-order current distortion was not seriously considered. Considering that the main objective of using the LCL-type filter is to fulfill the current quality standard, the optimized design of LCL-type filter for low-order current harmonic suppression is deeply discussed in this paper. It is demonstrated that the suppression of grid-induced low-order current harmonics is closely related to the LCL parameters. On the basis of selecting the inverter-side inductance according to the switching ripple requirement of inverter-side current, the rest two parameters including the capacitance and the grid-side inductance are designed to enhance the low-order current harmonic suppression. Finally, two sets of LCL parameters are tested in this study, one of which is obtained by the proposed design procedure. Experimental results have demonstrated a good grid current quality under a distorted grid.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"26 1","pages":"1178-1183"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81593097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, today's Li-ion batteries are reaching their limits and not all demands of the industry are met yet. Therefore, researchers focus on alternative battery chemistries as Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S), which have a huge potential due to their high theoretical specific capacity (approx. 1675 Ah/kg) and theoretical energy density of almost 2600 Wh/kg. To analyze the suitability of this new emerging technology for various applications, there is a need for Li-S battery performance model; however, developing such models represents a challenging task due to batteries' complex ongoing chemical reactions. Therefore, the literature review was performed to summarize electrical circuit models (ECMs) used for modeling the performance behavior of Li-S batteries. The studied Li-S pouch cell was tested in the laboratory in order to parametrize four basic ECM topologies. These topologies were compared by analyzing their voltage estimation accuracy values, which were obtained for different battery current profiles. Based on these results, the 3 R-C ECM was chosen and the Li-S battery cell discharging performance model with current dependent parameters was derived and validated.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"22 1","pages":"1375-1381"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82494375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the general circuit model of 3-winding coupled inductor together with the operating principles of dc-dc converter, the relationship between the ripple size of inductor current and the coupling factor for a 3-winding coupled inductor is derived under the different duty ratio. The optimal coupling factor which corresponds to a minimum inductor ripple current becomes -0.5, i.e. a complete inverse coupling without leakage inductance, as the steady-state duty ratio operating point approaches 1/3 or 2/3. In an opposite manner, the optimal coupling factor value of zero, i.e. zero mutual inductance, is required when the steady-state duty ratio operating point approaches either zero or one. Coupled inductors having optimal coupling factor can minimize the ripple current of inductor and battery ripple current resulting in a reliable and efficient operation of battery chargers.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"99 1","pages":"5667-5674"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80906377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A recently proposed control method - virtual synchronous machine (VSM), which controls grid-interfaced inverters to behave like synchronous machines so as to be more compatible with the existing power grid, has been applied to STATCOM and shows an improved performance over conventional D-Q frame based STATCOMs, along with tunable parameters that can be adjusted to different scenarios. In this paper, the idea is extended to a realistic STATCOM with LCL filter to mitigate harmonics and also some practical concerns about the active power compensation during transients, which is introduced uniquely by the VSM control method.
