In this paper, we describe performance of the magnetics for a 2 kW-level LLC converter, operating at 100 kHz with SiC devices. We present magnetics designed for high converter efficiencies (> 96%) at high-current outputs (65 A). We focus on the design considerations to minimize the leakage inductance of a center-tapped transformer with a high voltage transformation ratio. We present a variety of winding strategies and show the efficacy of a hybrid solution that combines foil windings with litz winding for the application described. We demonstrate the performance improvements through finite element simulations and measurements from several prototypes.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"28 1","pages":"5650-5656"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89649835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This transformer is bendable to wrap around the forearm. A model using partial equivalent circuit theory (PEEC) is established to analyze the characteristic of the bendable transformer. The bendable transformer is then applied to an LLC DCDC converter. A prototype is built and tested to verify the mode. This LLC resonant converter provides a 5 V, 500 mA (USB) output. Simulation and experimental results are included to confirm the usefulness of the transformer and the validity of the model.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"5865-5871"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89552214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization strategy for this 4L-HC inverter. The central DC-link capacitor and flying capacitor voltages are regulated by a modified phase-shifted PWM. The upper and lower capacitor voltages are balanced by zero-sequence voltage injection. The relationship of zero-sequence voltage and common-mode voltage is also investigated. By properly limiting the injected zero-sequence voltage, the peak value of common-mode voltage can be suppressed to less than 30% of the DC-link voltage. Simulation results are presented and a low power experimental prototype is built to verify the validity of this method.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"2 1","pages":"1611-1616"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89928345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, Inner stator thermal issues could be a concern for the DSSA VPM machines, and the inner stator cooling structure is complex. This paper proposes a single-winding, dual-stator, spoke-array (SDSSA) VPM machine. The double-sided machine with only single-side winding configuration makes the DSSA VPM machine free from the thermal issue of inner stator winding. Detailed structure features and experimental tests, such as inductance, back EMF waveforms, torque vs current and so on, of the SDSSA VPM machine are presented. It is shown that torque density and power factor of the SDDSA VPM prototype with less than 3A/mm2 are larger than 65kNm/m3 and 0.78, respectively while the torque per magnet mass is almost 120 Nm/kg. Finally, this paper proposes the comparison of experimental tests on the DSSA and SDSSA VPM prototypes.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"8 1","pages":"1885-1891"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86708972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a natural phenomenon has been verified in the fields of chemistry and biology over the last century. The use of electric springs (ES), which must be implemented in large quantity over the power grids, can also suffer from the same issue if specified design are not carried out. In this paper, a method of tuning Kp and Ki of the PI controllers of the ES to ensure the overall system stability in a weak grid is investigated. The method is based on the concept of relative stability and is achieved through the aid of simulation. Both simulation and experimental results validate that as the number of ES in the weak grid increases, more stringent values of Kp and Ki are required to achieve system stability. Apparently, a corresponding relationship between the optimal tuning of Kp and Ki of the PI controllers and the maximum number of ES installed in the weak grid exists. If the optimal values of Kp and Ki are adopted, a maximum number of ES can be stably installed over the grid.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"16 1","pages":"6838-6844"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88037458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compared to the existing parameter estimation strategies, the proposed estimation scheme has relative faster convergence time and is feasible in the transient operation. This estimation scheme is realized by the recursive least square algorithm based on different operating points of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM). With the proposed estimation scheme, the four parameters of the PMSM can be simultaneously estimated online. The derivatives of the d- and q-axis currents are considered in the proposed estimation scheme so that it is feasible in both steady state and transient state operation. The sampling principle is discussed to avoid the rank deficient problem for the estimation. An averaged sliding window is introduced for the estimation to minimize the estimation error from the A/D conversion and to reduce the influence of the measurement noise. The proposed estimation scheme is validated by the experimental results and compared with the parameter estimation with square wave current injection.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"73 1","pages":"4091-4096"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88037519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By using the commercially available 1200V Silicon Carbide (SiC) Junction Field Effect Transistor (JFET) and Metal Oxide semiconductor Filed-effect Transistor (MOSFET), a 6 kV SiC hybrid power switch concept and its application are demonstrated. To solve the parameter deviation issue in the series device structure, an optimized voltage control method is introduced, which can guarantee the equal voltage sharing under both static and dynamic state. Without Zener diode arrays, this strategy can significantly reduce the turn-off switching loss. Moreover, this hybrid MOSFET-JFETs concept is also presented to suppress the silicon MOSFET parasitic capacitance effect. In addition, the positive gate drive voltage greatly accelerates turn-on speed and decreases the switching loss. Compared with the conventional super-JFETs, the proposed scheme is suitable for series-connected device, and can achieve better performance. The effectiveness of this method is validated by simulations and experiments, and promising results are obtained.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"94 1","pages":"4113-4118"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85888358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Chevrolet VOLT is an electric vehicle with extended-range. It is capable of operation on battery power alone, and on hybrid/ engine power after depletion of the battery. 1st generation Chevrolet VOLTs (VOLT-1) were driven over half a billion miles in North America from October 2013 through September 2014, 74% of which were all-electric [1, 12]. For 2016, GM has developed the 2nd generation of the VOLT (VOLT-2) vehicle and “Voltec” propulsion system. This effort by GM and Delphi provides a significant cost benefit to the overall system by eliminating costly AC traction cables. Effort was taken to the electrical design of the power switch to achieve efficiency target and thermal challenges. A novel cooling approach enables high power density while maintaining a very high overall conversion efficiency. Design focus was applied to the mechanical design of this TPIM to provide extremely stiff frame required for reliability in the transmission environment and reduce integration cost.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"3 1","pages":"6006-6013"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85927348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Challenges such as intermittent generation supply, fault detection, anti-islanding operation and voltage control have received a great deal of research and practical attention. One practical challenge that hasn't been examined in detail is the ability of power system operating with a significant amount of distributed generation (and thus relatively less rotating inertia) to cope with sudden shifts in load. This paper presents the results of a practical investigation in to such an issue. One way of managing intermittent generation supply is to use output forecasting techniques, that give a forecast of generation availability at some future time, to ensure supply will be matched with likely future demand. We also present the results of an investigation in to the performance of one such solar output forecasting technique, based around the use of support vector machine approaches that take weather forecasts to provide detailed future generation forecasting.","PeriodicalId":6654,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)","volume":"8 1","pages":"1112-1116"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86818872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
