The existing gait analysis systems are either expensive or require controlled environments such as a laboratory or a clinic. Reha@Home system is an inexpensive and non-intrusive markerless gait analysis system based on a RGBD camera. The presented system is capable of measuring the subject's gait on a continuous basis in a typical living room environment. Based on the human body proportion ratios, a novel approach to compute the lower extremities from the segmented depth image is presented. The joint angles and the gait parameters are automatically extracted from the detected body joints. The performance of the system was evaluated with the ground truth values obtained from an electrogoniometer. The clinical evaluation shows that the system could be a useful tool for the therapists to assess the progress in rehabilitation and ascertain the therapy success.","PeriodicalId":6635,"journal":{"name":"2017 13th IASTED International Conference on Biomedical Engineering (BioMed)","volume":"8 1","pages":"32-41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81572699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present paper reports on the secondary reconstruction of the skeletal orbit following untreated orbital floor fracture in a patient wearing an ocular prosthesis because of an orbital trauma. A computer-assisted approach, based on anatomical modelling and custom-made mould fabrication via selective laser sintering, is proposed for manufacturing a preformed orbital implant. Such a procedure offers precise and predictable results for orbital reconstructions. This protocol proved an effective reduction of operating time, patient morbidity and a fast and low-cost preoperative planning procedure. Such an approach can be used for immediate and in-office manufacturing of custom implants in trauma and reconstructive patients.","PeriodicalId":6635,"journal":{"name":"2017 13th IASTED International Conference on Biomedical Engineering (BioMed)","volume":"10 1","pages":"260-264"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80524202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One way to increase survival rate amongst patients is to correctly diagnose cancer in its early stages. There are several classifiers which can classify cancer images with high accuracy. The goal of this paper was to present a brief survey of the main machine learning methods used in literature to classify brain tumor in MRI images. For an unbiased comparison between the different methods used in literature, gray level co-occurrence matrix probabilistic features(GLCM) were used as input features for training and testing the models. Two methodologies were used to establish the significance of feature reduction in classification accuracy. In the first methodology, the extracted feature set from GLCM was applied to the classifiers for comparison of performance. In the second methodology, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to reduce the extracted features and afterwards the uncorrelated reduced vector was applied to the same classifiers. As a result, it was observed that the reduced uncorrelated features improved the accuracy of all classifiers by 10 to 27%.","PeriodicalId":6635,"journal":{"name":"2017 13th IASTED International Conference on Biomedical Engineering (BioMed)","volume":"47 1","pages":"55-62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76870019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It consists of three cable-driven systems, one endoscope serving as guide and two inserted instruments. The flexible and bendable instruments have three degrees of freedom and can be teleoperated by a single user via two specially designed master interfaces. In this research, a pair of specific sensor gloves, which ergonomically fit to the master handles of the system was designed and the forces applied by one expert and one novice user during system-specific task execution were compared. The results show that user expertise is not only reflected by shorter task execution times, but also by specific differences in handgrip forces applied during the manipulations.","PeriodicalId":6635,"journal":{"name":"2017 13th IASTED International Conference on Biomedical Engineering (BioMed)","volume":"40 1","pages":"94-99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78477466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To visualize tomographic and topographic properties of tissue by detection of diffusely reflected photons, it is fundamental for this method to get information from the depth of the examination object. The experimental setup as well as the workflow for investigating the experimentally achievable depth sensitivity of the newly approach is described in this paper. In this study a well-established liquid tissue phantom was used to detect inhomogeneous structures in the depth of the object.","PeriodicalId":6635,"journal":{"name":"2017 13th IASTED International Conference on Biomedical Engineering (BioMed)","volume":"28 1","pages":"42-48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81527006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to its low computational complexity and low memory need, this approach is well-suited for low power designs, as required for medical devices and implants. We use linear state space models to gain recursive, efficient computation rules and obtain the model parameters by minimizing the squared error on discrete-time observations. Furthermore we combine multiple models of different time-scales to match superpositions of signals of variable length. To give immediate access to our method, we highlight the use in several practical examples on standard and on esophageal ECG signals. This method was adapted and improved as part of a research and development project for medical devices.","PeriodicalId":6635,"journal":{"name":"2017 13th IASTED International Conference on Biomedical Engineering (BioMed)","volume":"38 1","pages":"125-133"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77261775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
