Gait modeling is studied in order to find a pattern of walking that can be used for diagnosis of walking disorder or abnormal walk detection. Difficulty in walking progressively increases with aging and causes unintentional falls, which is a common incident among elderly people. Fall prediction systems can help to prevent unintentional falls that could cause serious injuries, therefore they can reduce the health service costs. This paper presents an algorithm with polynomial classification model of human gait for real-time fall prediction. This approach enables the user to detect the transition from a normal to an abnormal walking pattern. A dataset based on the state-of-the-art techniques in simulating abnormal walks was created by using an accelerometer embedded in a smartphone, which is recognized to be precise enough for fall avoidance systems. The proposed approach improves state-of-the-art fall prediction approaches, by achieving 99.2% of accuracy in abnormal walk detection.","PeriodicalId":6556,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 41st Annual Computer Software and Applications Conference (COMPSAC)","volume":"320 1","pages":"973-978"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77801040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While most of the related works choose to focus on specific dimensions of the data, the proposed models aim to benefit from the extent of the information existing in social platforms. Thus, this paper explores the full potential of social media data and proposes novel clustering models for retrieving information about city dynamics and urban characterization by incorporating new dimensions to state of the art algorithms. Aspects such as venue rating, entropy and popularity may lead to new and more complete understanding of activities and trends in a city. Preliminary experiments show that it is possible to aggregate a large diversity of information from different social networks, and generate different and complementary visualizations of the city. Moreover, by applying these methods to urban environments, governments and citizens can better understand and build better sustainable cities together.","PeriodicalId":6556,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 41st Annual Computer Software and Applications Conference (COMPSAC)","volume":"71 1","pages":"816-821"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86127822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We focus on protecting physical devices from illegal access by intruders and give basic analysis for fundamental gaps between physical devices and embedded IoT softwares. We clarify that the critical difficulty in IoT security is implementing both of device functions and IoT functions on a same physical device. We also propose the IoT Agent Platform mechanism to separate IoT functions from physical devies and to run isolated IoT functions on cloud environment. The mechanism is based on the Dripcast which is a transparent programming framework for IoT devices where we don't care about communication, server-side programming nor database, at all. The Dripcast provides a very simple and easy development model which is a key for device vendors to develop physical devices to use IoT functions.","PeriodicalId":6556,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 41st Annual Computer Software and Applications Conference (COMPSAC)","volume":"15 1","pages":"684-689"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82625931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We developed a belt-shaped interface with a matrix of 35 (7x5) vibrotactile actuators attached to the users' abdomen. Tests demonstrated that the device can help users to perceive the movement of objects and people, as well as allow them to move in environments containing obstacles without the usage of the vision. The system was tested both with users who are blind and with blindfolded participants. The stages of building and testing the interface as well as the tests applied in this research are described.","PeriodicalId":6556,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 41st Annual Computer Software and Applications Conference (COMPSAC)","volume":"95 12","pages":"851-860"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91458174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each LXC container has a resource overhead smaller than that of a virtual machine, leading to significantly lower container migration time and making frequent container placement modification a viable optimization technique. Traditional container scheduling mechanisms do not leverage this property of LXC. Generally, a scheduler tries to find the most optimal placement for a new container, the allocated host then executes the scheduled container until the end of the container's life cycle. This strategy works fine for short-lived containers. With a long-lived container such as a server process becoming more and more common, and the container placement calculated at the beginning of the execution may not remain optimal during the container's lifetime, since the other containers are moving in and out of the cluster. This research proposes container rebalancing, a novel scheduling mechanism with a rebalancing process working alongside a scheduling process. The container rebalancing method increases LXC cluster utilization while maintaining minimal interference with the scheduling process. This is done by continuously modifying container placement, by using the rebalancing process, in order to load-balance utilization of each host in the LXC cluster. LXC cluster simulation driven by Google's cluster data is used to verify the feasibility of container rebalancing. Simulation results show an observable increase in container scheduled rate and cluster utilization with no drawback, suggesting that container rebalancing is a promising method.","PeriodicalId":6556,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 41st Annual Computer Software and Applications Conference (COMPSAC)","volume":"696 25","pages":"788-795"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91461700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this design study, \"Talis\" is presented as a wearable device which uses emotion recognition as an interface between patient and machine to support psychotherapeutic treatment. We combine two therapy methods, \"Cognitive Behavioral Therapy\" and \"Well-Being Therapy\", with interactive methods thought to increase their practical application potential. In this study, we draw on the results obtained in the area of \"affective computing\" for the use of emotions in empathic devices. The positive and negative phases experienced by the patient are identified through speech recognition and used for direct communication and later evaluation. After considering the design possibilities and suitable hardware, the future realization of such technology appears feasible. In order to design the wearable, user studies and technical experiments were carried out. The results of these suggest that the device could be beneficial for the treatment of patients with depression.","PeriodicalId":6556,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 41st Annual Computer Software and Applications Conference (COMPSAC)","volume":"47 1","pages":"543-548"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80541755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
