Prominent example are Uniform Circular Arrays (UCAs). Unfortunately, UCAs are not easily installable on small or narrow platforms, as it is in the case of UAVs; this is due also to the long wavelengths of the signals in the VHF band that would call for very large array apertures. It is mandatory, in these cases, to resort to irregular geometries, but so far no clear strategy exists, on how to design these types of arrays. Currently the design process is mainly a matter of “Trial and Error” approach, possibly aided by the designer personal experience and \"know-how\". In this contribution a new design methodology is described, aiming at reducing dramatically the time needed to find an effective solution to the installation problem.","PeriodicalId":6496,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (APSURSI)","volume":"39 1","pages":"1905-1906"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84437478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that circularly-polarized antennas have better performance compared to similar linearly-polarized ones in the presence of the human body. A novel y-slot wideband CP antenna is proposed. The antenna consists of a u-shaped feed, a y-slot, and a parasitic stub. Simulation results show a bandwidth of 82% (3-7.2 GHz) for VSWR<;2:1 with a 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 33% (4.6-6.4 GHz). The proposed antenna has a low profile with an overall size of 28 mm×28 mm×1.6 mm.","PeriodicalId":6496,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (APSURSI)","volume":"559 1","pages":"1817-1818"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84480147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Future ocean observation missions call for new solutions, such as digitally-beamforming array feeds (DBAFs) as well as stationary and more complex reflectors. Our studies demonstrate that DBAFs can overcome the physically fundamental limitations of traditional horn feeds, and are capable of meeting all the challenging requirements for the next-generation instruments.","PeriodicalId":6496,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (APSURSI)","volume":"5 1","pages":"1377-1378"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84500976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A wide beamwidth is obtained when a combination of a square ring with negative perturbation and a square patch with positive perturbation is used as parasitic and driven elements, respectively. This arrangement provides circular polarization with improved performance. The CSRRs are etched on the back side of the transmission and connected by slot line to achieve the desired resonance frequency. The quasi-static resonance of the CSRRs elements drives the cut-off frequency of the LPF and closed fundamental resonances achieve the wide rejection. Two Array configuration are proposed and demonstrate a good improvement in term impedance bandwidth of LPF rejected band. A good agreement match is shown between presented measured and simulated results. As part of the optimization design, we analyzed the behaviors of the initial filtering structure with two different CSRR radius.","PeriodicalId":6496,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (APSURSI)","volume":"20 1","pages":"487-488"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86010100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A tunable transformer-based inductor is employed instead of the fixed inductor in conventional π-cell to keep the characteristic impedance of the line independent of the phase shift. In the proposed transformer based tunable inductor secondary terminals of the transformer are connected to a varactor to produce a variable inductor at the input of the transformer. To verify the operation principle, a 60GHz transformer in 65nm CMOS technology is EM simulated in HFSS and results have been imported into the circuit simulator for the overall characterization of the system with a varactor. A large phase shift of 480, average insertion loss of 3.5dB and input/output return loss of 10dB is achieved in the 60 GHz band.","PeriodicalId":6496,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (APSURSI)","volume":"88 1","pages":"1141-1142"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76855887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Perforating one side of this cavity, the modes formed within can be projected into an imaging domain, multiplexing the scene's spatial content into backscattered signals that is post-processed to obtain high-quality images. While this device has shown great promise as a platform for computational imaging at microwave frequencies, its premise necessitates a large bandwidth, a requirement that complicates circuit design and may not be readily available. In this presentation, we propose and report preliminary experimental results for a cavity containing a tunable artificial impedance surface in one of its walls. By varying the electromagnetic response of the cavity's boundary the field distribution within the cavity can be altered, thus generating distinct radiation patterns without a large bandwidth.","PeriodicalId":6496,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (APSURSI)","volume":"186 1","pages":"1901-1902"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76932115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The array is based on a 3-bit unit-cell composed of two patch antennas printed on two substrates and isolated by a ground plane printed on an inner layer of the dielectric stack. A 10λ-diameter (20 unit-cells on the vertical and horizontal axes) flat array has been optimized using an ad-hoc tool based on analytical formulas and unit-cell/focal source electromagnetic simulations. The design has been validated through 3D electromagnetic simulations. An aperture efficiency of 39% and a 1-dB bandwidth of 9% have been obtained in good agreement with the numerical results.","PeriodicalId":6496,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (APSURSI)","volume":"41 1","pages":"793-794"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77071511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
