The double-clad design is achieved by surrounding the inner cladding (pump core) with a web of silica bridges (as thin as 390 nm and approximately 50 /spl mu/m long) which are substantially narrower than the wavelength of the guided radiation. It is concluded that air-clad microstructure ytterbium-doped large-mode-area fibers should be scalable to kW-level output powers, where nonlinearity will limit the performance.","PeriodicalId":6370,"journal":{"name":"2003 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (CLEO/Europe 2003) (IEEE Cat. The problems for the super-Rayleigh resolution are discussed and a possibility of gray scale image generation was shown. The fragmentation of the cross section of the Fabry-Perot cavity helps to suppress smoothening of the image edges during large objects generation. A numerical model of pump modulated lasing pixels (PMLP) was developed, the results of calculation being in good agreement with experiments.","PeriodicalId":6370,"journal":{"name":"2003 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (CLEO/Europe 2003) (IEEE Cat. Conventional adaptive optics (AO) systems usually use separate subsystems to perform wavefront sensing and correction, which involve large matrix manipulation. In a feedback interferometer, the intensity of the interference pattern is used to control the wavefront corrector, thus combining the two subsystems together. To develop a practical system for use in real turbulent environments, there are several issues that need to be considered. There are concerns in the control algorithm as well when try to use the system in practice. Scintillation and frequency response are the major issues. The frequency response determines how fast the aberration that the system can track and correct. Atmospheric induced aberration might have frequency components as high as 200 Hz.","PeriodicalId":6370,"journal":{"name":"2003 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (CLEO/Europe 2003) (IEEE Cat. The optical design of using multidiode lasers allows flexibility with regard to the optical power and the pump wavelength while increasing the reliability figures of a single diode laser. The active alignment during integration guarantees an optical coupling efficiency higher than 60%. Material selection and thermo-mechanical design have been carried out to withstand the harsh environmental conditions typical of the launch phase and of the in orbit operation. Optimisation of mass and volume led to a compact and easy to accommodate solution. Network simulations show that the neural network demonstrator hardware can be used to implement two different classes of feed-forward network, the multilayer perceptron (MLP) and radial basis function (RBF) networks. In both cases, the actual training of the networks is performed offline using hardware simulations and the weighted interconnections between neurons are fixed before application to the optoelectronic hardware.","PeriodicalId":6370,"journal":{"name":"2003 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (CLEO/Europe 2003) (IEEE Cat. Reliable machining at high productivity and quality as well as simplified machine operation are the actual goals. Monitoring and control of the dynamical process is investigated. This work describes the advances in fundamental physical modeling of time dependent processes such as piercing and contour cutting. Singular perturbation and spectral methods are applied to reveal the number and type of characteristic dynamical variables. Refinement of the dynamical model is performed in order to identify the relations between phase space dimension of the model, properties of the monitoring signals and the quality features of the process. As result the dynamical properties of the process are mapped to different domains of the processing parameters.","PeriodicalId":6370,"journal":{"name":"2003 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (CLEO/Europe 2003) (IEEE Cat.
