We combined adjacent conventional cages to form group cages to examine the effects of stocking density on egg production, economic returns, and aggressive pecking of hens. The control group included triplicate conventional cages with four birds/single cage (12 hens per three cages) or 450 cm<sup>2</sup> area per hen. Three group cage treatments were set up with 10, 12, and 14 birds per group cage or 540, 450, and 386 cm<sup>2</sup> of floor area per hen, respectively. Compared to 14 birds per cage, hens housed at 10 birds per group cage had a higher hen-day production, consumed less feed, and thus had a better feed conversion ratio/dozen eggs. Reducing the stocking density to 10 birds per group cage resulted in additional production cost, but it was compensated for by a high egg income, and significantly decreased aggressive pecks. Group cages benefit hen performance, profitability, and welfare when decreasing the stocking density to 10 birds per cage with 540 cm<sup>2</sup>/hen.</p>","PeriodicalId":56277,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science","volume":"26 3","pages":"374-385"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9633913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the link between an individual animal's welfare and the beliefs and emotional connection of the owner to the animal is understudied and focussed on single cultures, limiting generalisability. In this study, we explored potential links between owner attitude, beliefs in animal sentience, and working equid welfare across four continents. This study used a welfare assessment protocol alongside a questionnaire exploring owner attitudes to assess 378 participants across six countries. Overall, the general health status and body condition of equids belonging to owners with an affective (versus instrumental) perspective and those owners who believed that their equids could feel emotions, were significantly better. Equids belonging to owners who believed that their animals could feel pain were also significantly less likely to be lame. Potential causal relationships between factors and theories explaining these beliefs are discussed. These results can inform future welfare initiatives by highlighting the importance of the human-equid relationship and the role that beliefs regarding animal sentience play in influencing equid welfare.</p>","PeriodicalId":56277,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science","volume":" ","pages":"1-19"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9699059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forty-eight sows were used at 90 days of gestation until the weaning of their piglets. During gestation, sows were divided into two treatments: control and with music enrichment. In farrowing/lactation, sows were divided into four treatments: control - control (without music); control - music (music during farrowing/lactation); music - control (music during pregnancy); music - music (music in both phases). Sows' behavior, eye temperature, and reproductive performance were evaluated. In the gestation phase, control group sows remained standing more times and had more negative interactions with the other sows in the pen. In the farrowing/lactating phase, sows exposed to music presented more nursing behaviors. Biomaterials and pathologic materials were investigated of 114 abortions, dead ewes, and newborn lambs using the bacteriological method with the diagnostic purpose from 2009 to 2019. As a result of the bacteriological studies, the causative agent of salmonella sheep abortion was isolated and identified - Salmonella abortus-ovis. The study concludes that salmonella sheep abortion is a significant infectious disease that can cause massive economic losses and high mortality rates in sheep breeding. To contribute method development for studying effects on dogs in pedagogical work, we applied and evaluated a combination of four data collection methods: Ethogram, Qualitative Behaviour Assessment (QBA), ethnographic observations, and interviews with dog-handling pedagogues. We followed pedagogues (<i>n</i> = 5) and their dogs (<i>n</i> = 8) in their daily work, observing 16 canine-assisted sessions in total at five different schools. Follow-up semi-structured interviews were carried out with all pedagogues. Our findings suggest combining either ethogram or QBA with ethnographic data that gives contextual information on the events causing the dog's behavior. The method choice will, ultimately, depend on study design, but the specific premises of QBA seem to work particularly well with ethnography. We further suggest a shift from simultaneous (parallel) to synchronous (connected) documentation of data.
