Recently, Babaioff, Dobzinski and Oren [EC'18] introduced the notion of endowed valuations --- valuations that capture the endowment effect --- and studied the stability and efficiency of combinatorial markets with endowed valuations. They showed that under a specific formulation of the endowment effect, an endowed equilibrium --- market equilibrium with respect to endowed valuations --- is guaranteed to exist in markets with submodular valuations, but fails to exist under XOS valuations. We harness the endowment effect further by introducing a general framework that captures a wide range of different formulations of the endowment effect. The different formulations are (partially) ranked from weak to strong, based on a stability-preserving order. We then provide algorithms for computing endowment equilibria with high welfare for sufficiently strong endowment effects, and non-existence results for weaker ones. Among other results, we prove the existence of endowment equilibria under XOS valuations, and show that if one can pre-pack items into irrevocable bundles then an endowment equilibrium exists for arbitrary markets.","PeriodicalId":56237,"journal":{"name":"ACM SIGecom Exchanges","volume":"18 1","pages":"38 - 44"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1145/3440968.3440973","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47663909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At a high level, this research agenda proposes formalizing the ethical and social values that we want our algorithms to maintain --- values including privacy, fairness, and explainability --- and then to embed these social values directly into our algorithms as part of their design. This broad research area is most mature in the area of privacy, specifically differential privacy. It is off to a good start in emerging areas like algorithmic fairness, and seems promising for more nebulous goals like explainability, if only we can find the right definitions. Most work in this area to date analyzes algorithms as isolated components, but game-theoretic and economic analysis will become increasingly important as we try and study the effects of algorithmic interventions in larger sociotechnical systems.","PeriodicalId":56237,"journal":{"name":"ACM SIGecom Exchanges","volume":"18 1","pages":"31 - 36"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1145/3440959.3440966","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49248188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing upon principal-agent models in the mechanism design literature, we construct and analyze a model of strategic behavior under algorithmic evaluation. We characterize which behaviors can be incentivized by any reasonable mechanism, showing that simple linear mechanisms are sufficient to incentivize desired behavior. However, we find that it is computationally hard to optimize even simple objectives subject to the constraint that the resulting linear mechanism induces the desired incentives.","PeriodicalId":56237,"journal":{"name":"ACM SIGecom Exchanges","volume":"18 1","pages":"45 - 52"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1145/3440968.3440974","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47201702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A challenge is to set prices that are appropriately smooth in space and time, so that drivers will choose to accept their dispatched trips, rather than drive to another area or wait for higher prices or a better trip. We work in a complete information, discrete time, multi-period, multi-location model, and introduce the Spatio-Temporal Pricing (STP) mechanism. The mechanism is incentive-aligned, in that it is a subgame-perfect equilibrium for drivers to always accept their trip dispatches. The mechanism is also welfare-optimal, envy-free, individually rational, budget balanced and core-selecting in equilibrium from any history onward. The proof of incentive alignment makes use of the M♯ concavity of minimum cost flow objectives. We also give an impossibility result, that there can be no dominant-strategy mechanism with the same economic properties. Simulation results suggest that the STP mechanism can achieve significantly higher social welfare than a myopic pricing mechanism.","PeriodicalId":56237,"journal":{"name":"ACM SIGecom Exchanges","volume":"18 1","pages":"53 - 57"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1145/3440968.3440975","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43460368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Il montre la diversite des trajectoires des organisations migrantes orientees de maniere transnationale : certaines perdent leur caractere radical contrairement a d’autres qui le maintiennent. Nombre de facteurs determinent, selon la litterature, l’engagement politique transnational : les raisons a l’origine de la migration, la structure des opportunites politiques dans le pays de residence et dans le pays d’origine et la duree de sejour des migrants. Toutefois ces facteurs ne permettent guere d’expliquer la diversite des trajectoires, puisqu’ils concernent de la meme maniere toute la gauche turque et, des lors, ne peuvent rendre compte des differences a l’interieur de ce courant politique. Les raisons de ces changements sont a chercher ailleurs. L’analyse montre que les organisations migrantes ne deviennent des veritables organisations de migrants que lorsque leur organisation parallele au pays d’origine a pris une option politique qui ne rend plus necessaire un soutien de l’etranger. Au lieu de considerer que les opportunites politiques du pays d’origine concernent tous les groupes, l’on doit s’interroger sur la maniere, dont certains groupes, appartenant parfois au meme courant politique, sont inclus ou exclus de la participation politique dans le pays d’origine. Enfin l’article montre que contrairement a une opinion largement partagee, il n’y a guere d’indications selon lesquelles un interet soutenu dans le devenir politique du pays d’origine est un frein a l’integration politique et constitue une menace pour la democratie aux Pays-Bas.","PeriodicalId":56237,"journal":{"name":"ACM SIGecom Exchanges","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75164019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
