Our aim is to use current practices and literature to develop recommendations for nurse navigators' execution of preoperative optimization protocols related to payer status and medication management. Discussions with nurse navigators and a literature search were used to gather information and develop recommendations specific to optimizing payer status and medication management. Nurse navigators connected patients to resources and provided education regarding financial concerns and medications, and findings from the literature discussed insurance status among TJA patients. Nurse navigators can contribute to payer status and medication management optimization by providing patient education and resource referrals. In addition, we recommend conducting repeated medication reconciliation and developing awareness of financial resources and perioperative medication management guidelines.</p>","PeriodicalId":56102,"journal":{"name":"Orthopaedic Nursing","volume":"43 4","pages":"195-201"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11279383/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141762985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this double-blind randomized controlled trial was to examine the effect of foot reflexology on pain and kinesiophobia in patients following total knee arthroplasty. A total of 40 patients (20 in the control group and 20 in the intervention group) were randomly assigned to either of two groups for the study. The intervention group was exposed to foot reflexology. Postoperative Visual Analog Scale scores decreased faster in the intervention group compared to the control group (F = 80.417; p < .001; η2 = 0.685). The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scores decreased in the intervention group over time, while they increased in the control group (p < .05). While a gradual increase was observed in the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia scores in the control group, there was a decrease in the intervention group (F = 84.860; p < .001; η2 = 0.696). The amount of analgesics used was lower in the intervention group (p < .05). This requires an effective referral system. The aim of this study was to evaluate a quality improvement project addressing inefficiencies in the osteoarthritis referral process between primary care providers and orthopedic specialists. A pre- and post-intervention evaluation using medical record review and provider surveys was conducted to measure the process improvement of a primary care to orthopedic referral template. There was a 3.5% increase in the referral acceptance rate following the intervention. In addition, primary care providers perceived that role clarity and perception on making referrals had significantly improved. The largest perceived improved change among orthopedic specialists was in communication. A simple process change, such as improving the referral template, can help with communication, data transfer, and referral acceptance rates between primary care providers and orthopedic specialists. This in turn will benefit the large population of veterans needing orthopedic referrals for management of osteoarthritis.</p>","PeriodicalId":56102,"journal":{"name":"Orthopaedic Nursing","volume":"43 4","pages":"212-217"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141762986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

HGT is a dependable solution for these challenging spinal deformities. Aligning treatment guidelines and providing resources, education, and training for staff are key components for a successful HGT program. The HGT program at Children's Mercy Hospital was then developed with a systems approach with the holistic goal of multidisciplinary collaboration with physical/occupational therapy, hospital medicine, pulmonology, psychology, nutrition, child life, and complex care management.
