It explores currently available sensors based on the 3D sensing technology developed by PrimeSense and introduced to the market in the form of the Microsoft Kinect. Accuracy and repeatability can be crucial criteria for the use of these sensors outside their intended use for home entertainment. The test strategies for the study are motivated by the VDI/VDE 2634 guideline. At the core of the work is the investigation of several units of the Asus Xtion Pro and the PrimeSense Developer Kit and a comparison of their performance. Altogether eighteen sensor units were tested. The results of the proposed test scenario for the sensor units show excellent repeatability at a few millimetres. However, absolute accuracy is worse and can be up to a few centimetres. The hyperspectral data are )rst split into a \u0000number of band clusters based on the similarities \u0000between the contiguous bands, and each band \u0000group is considered as an independent data source. \u0000The redundant bands in each cluster are then removed \u0000using branch and bound technique. Next, a \u0000support vector machine (SVM) is applied to each \u0000cluster and the outputs are combined using the \u0000weights calculated in AdaBoost iterations. Experimental \u0000results with AVIRIS and ROSIS datasets \u0000clearly demonstrate the superiority of the proposed \u0000algorithm in both overall and single class accuracies \u0000when compared to other multiple classi)er systems. \u0000For AVIRIS data, which contains classes \u0000with greater complexity and fewer available training \u0000samples, the differences between the overall \u0000accuracies of the AdaBoost results are signi)cantly \u0000higher compared to those of the other methods, and \u0000more pronounced than for the other dataset. The resolution of the available sensors however was quite limited until now and only the detection of huge upstanding monuments or cultural landscapes was possible. The launch of TerraSAR-X, a German radar satellite in 2007, however, now offers a resolution of up to 1 m, which is required as a minimum for detecting small archaeological remains. Whereas upstanding monuments are clearly identifiable, it was still uncertain, whether the used high-frequency X-band waves of TerraSAR-X could penetrate the soil and provide information on buried archaeology as well. This paper shows the results of two test sites in Syria and Italy. Both of them have in common that there are extensive surveys by ground-based geophysical surveys with magnetometry and ground-penetrating radar, which provide information on the buried archaeological remains.
