Amphipods host associated epibiont rotifers, and the aim of the study is to explore the possibility that bdelloid rotifers living as epibionts on amphipods in Lake Baikal coevolved with their hosts and diversified with species-specific host–epibiont associations. We sampled 148 individual amphipods belonging to 16 species and isolated all epibiont bdelloids from them, discovering that only one bdelloid species, Embata parasitica, lives associated with at least six amphipod species belonging to three different families. Similar to what is known in most other bdelloid species, the morphospecies Embata parasitica from Lake Baikal is likely to be a complex of cryptic species, as suggested by the high genetic diversity we found in one mitochondrial marker sequenced from several animals. Yet none of the divergent genetic lineages seemed to be associated to only one or a few amphipod species. In addition, nine bdelloid species were found living in the lake, increasing the known diversity of the area to 12 bdelloid species.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42436806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The few aquaporins identified to date play major roles in excretion in insects. Excretion is a major source of indoor allergens from the house dust mite species, but, to date, aquaporins have not been well studied in these species. We used RNA sequencing to study the transcriptome of the house dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus to identify putative aquaporin family members. RNA was isolated from more than 2000 mites for 5΄-RACE and 3΄-RACE. Putative aquaporins were identified through BLAST alignments, and primers were designed to amplify the five identified sequences. These cDNA fragments were then inserted into bacterial plasmids for molecular cloning and sequencing of DerpAQP1, DerpAQP2, DerpAQP3, DerpAQP4, and DerpAQP5 (GenBank accessions nos. KY305293, KY305294, KY305295, KY305296, and KY305298, respectively). Phylogenetic analysis of cloned sequences revealed the clustering of these putative aquaporins into two groups with human aquaporins (hAQPs): DerpAQP3 was clustered with hAQP8, hAQP11, and hAQP12; and DerpAQP1, DerpAQP2, DerpAQP4, DerpAQP5 were clustered with hAQP3, hAQP7 hAQP9, and hAQP10. Species of the Tetramorium inquilinum species-group represents one of the most extreme forms of parasitism and consist of degenerate workerless social parasites of several Tetramorium species. So far, its members have been recorded in the Palearctic from montane to alpine zones and reveal an interesting disjunction in host selection observed between eastern-Mediterranean and western-Mediterranean species. We describe a fifth member of the Tetramorium inquilinum species-group: Tetramorium albenae Salata, van Delft & Borowiec sp. n. The species morphologically differs from the remaining members of the group by the combination of the following characters: dense and erect pilosity of appendages and the whole body, smooth head sculpture, predominantly smooth anepisternum and katepisternum, lack of blunt teeth on propodeum, and presence of distinct carianae on the dorsolateral margins of the propodeum. Tetramorium albenae Salata, van Delft & Borowiec sp. n. was collected in a lowland olive grove, a site so far not associated with the Tetramorium inquilinum species-group, from a nest of Tetramorium kephalosi (a new host species for the group). The data presented in this paper provide new insights into the habitat preferences of the species of the Tetramorium inquilinum species-group and extend our knowledge on the potential host species of these parasites. http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:62610BFE-7BF4-44E7-ADB5-3DD6A9B759C0","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44926865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DNA metabarcoding enables inference of species and even intraspecific diversity from community samples but has rarely been used to infer metacommunity structure. Here, we combined morphology and metabarcoding to improve the characterization of an insect metacommunity at different identification levels. We included measures of taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic richness, and we evaluated drivers affecting metacommunity structure (i.e., environmental filtering and dispersal). Communities were sampled from an area that included nine perennial, two near-perennial and two intermittent sites in a river network characterized by high hydrological variability. We identified organisms to a mixed (family to species) taxonomic level using morphology, and to operational taxonomic unit (OTU) and haplotype levels using metabarcoding of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase gene. Diptera and Ephemeroptera showed the greatest increases in taxonomic and phylogenetic richness but not biological trait richness with increasing taxonomic resolution. The joint effect of environmental filtering and dispersal was more important than their individual effects in shaping metacommunity structure at all identification levels. Mixed-level and OTU-level identification were more effective than family and haplotype in characterizing the drivers of metacommunity structure. We demonstrate that the greater taxonomic resolution enabled by metabarcoding could improve understanding of metacommunities within river networks, thus enhancing our capacity to predict ecological responses in ecosystems adapting to global change.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46016550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was conducted in an urban park in Poland. We obtained genetic samples from 36 broods (123 nestlings) of 21 unique pairs. The proportion of broods with some extra-pair nestlings was 17.1% (6 broods), and overall, 13.1% (16 nestlings) of all nestlings were sired by extra-pair males. In one brood (2.8% of all the investigated broods), we found one egg laid by a female which did not have her own territory in the study area (brood parasitism). These figures are relatively low compared to other closely related passerines. We suggest that mate guarding in the studied population may effectively prevent females from engaging in extra-pair activity, and in the case of females, divorce and serial polygamy are better strategies for enhancing the genetic quality and genetic diversity of their offspring than infidelity.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41253734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deer, for which surgical castration can cause abnormal growth of the antlers, are suitable candidates for pharmacological castration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pharmacological castration on the physiological patterns and volatile chemical profiles of two deer species. We placed a subcutaneous implant of deslorelin acetate (4.7 mg) on four male red deer (Cervus elaphus) and two male fallow deer (Dama dama) (N = 6) living together in a mixed-sex and -species group housed at a wildlife rescue centre in Tuscany, Italy. We combined hormone measurements and chemical investigation of metatarsal scent-gland odour secretions to test whether pharmacological castration will influence the volatile chemical profile, potentially modifying the olfactory communication during the rutting season. We used radioimmunoassay technique to determine faecal and plasma testosterone as well as faecal cortisol levels, and solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyse the scent-gland odour secretions. We found that deer testosterone levels decreased after the subcutaneous deposition of the implant. However, castrated red deer exhibited more variability in testosterone concentrations throughout the study period compared to fallow deer, whose testosterone levels remained low after the implant. We detected a total of 124 (red deer) and 88 (fallow deer) volatile compounds in male scent-gland odour secretions, including naturally occurring ketones, alcohols, aldehydes, terpenes, carboxylic acids, esters, volatile fatty acids, and hydrocarbons. Odour richness, but not total abundance or ratios of compounds, changed with testosterone levels in red deer. In conclusion, our preliminary findings suggest that deslorelin acetate, causing a decrease of testosterone level and impacting the chemical profile of odour secretions, could work as a non-invasive contraception approach in human-managed populations of deer.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46204223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Once widespread throughout Europe, Palingenia longicauda (Olivier, 1791), an iconic species of large pristine rivers, has lost most of its original range, but conservation efforts are greatly hampered by its morphology, which is similar to the sympatric P. fuliginosa (Georgi, 1802) and the peripatric P. sublongicauda Tshernova, 1949. Based on the revision of Soldán’s original collection, supplemented with fresh material from southeastern Europe, we analyzed 213 adult male specimens from 15 different locations from the presently known distribution area of Palingenia in Europe. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based on the morphometry results of penis morphology and eye distances showed no significant differences among the analyzed populations. Further, the mtCOI barcode sequence data of 73 individuals from the known range of Palingenia species in southeastern Europe represented highly similar populations genetically, with no differentiation. These results show the presence of only one species in southeastern Europe, P. longicauda, thus disproving the distribution of P. fuliginosa in this region. The taxonomic status of P. sublongicauda remains doubtful, as no type material or fresh material from the locus typicus of the species was available for this study. A comprehensive revision of Palingenia, including additional species from Asia and the Indomalayan regions, is highly recommended to reevaluate the species composition of Palingenia and detect the most closely related taxa of the single P. longicauda in Europe.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48899091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We examined long-term changes in the autumn migration timing of immature Garden Warblers using data from ringing station Bukowo-Kopań on the Polish Baltic coast in 1967–2018. We calculated an Annual Anomaly (AA) of migration and the dates when 10%, 50% and 90% of migrating birds were caught at each station. We modelled AA and the dates of these percentiles of passage for each station against the year and bi-monthly spring, summer and autumn temperatures as explanatory variables in multiple linear regression models. The overall passage (AA) of immature Garden Warblers advanced by 7 days and the dates of the 50th and 90th passage percentiles advanced by 6–11 days. Overall passage, and dates for 50% of passage occurred later the higher summer temperatures rose in Finland. We suggest favourable foraging conditions in warm summers at these breeding grounds and at first stopover sites delayed the passage because these inexperienced birds took advantage of the conditions to accumulate fuel before migrating south. The overall passage, and the dates of 10%, 50% and 90% of autumn passage occurred the earlier the higher were spring temperatures on spring migration route in Italy, and the higher were mean summer temperatures at breeding grounds in southern Sweden and Norway. We suggest a trans-generation carry-over effect, as warm springs encourage early arrival and nesting of returning adults, thus earlier broods and hatching of juveniles, which also grow faster in warm summers. These effects enable immatures to migrate earlier in autumn after a warm breeding season. The long-term increase in Europe’s spring and summer temperatures thus help explain the shift in Garden Warblers’ migration timing.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42409822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Individuals of both sexes from an exploited stock of Margherita di Savoia (Southern Adriatic Sea, Central Mediterranean Sea) were made in June 2020 and 2021, and in January 2021 and 2022, representative of summer and winter seasons, respectively. Tissues from the foot and the gills were analyzed for histochemical and lectin-histochemical analyses. Staining with Periodic Acid-Schiff, Alcian Blue pH 2.5 and High-Iron-Diamine indicated that mucins from both the foot and the gills were acidic, mostly sulfated. Lectin-binding analyses with PNA, SBA, WGA, LTA, UEA-I, AAA, SNA, MAA-II and ConA indicated the presence of N-acetyl-glycosaminylated, mannosylated and fucosylated residuals in the saccharidic chains. In the gills, the amount of acidic and glycosaminylated residuals was higher in summer in both sexes, whereas fucosylation was similar along the sampling period and mannosylation was never observed. In the foot, both surface epithelial and subepidermal secreting cells increased sulfation in winter in males, but not in females. Glycosaminylation and fucosylation were observed only in the surface cells of males. Mannosylated residuals were observed in all the foot cell types in both sexes. It is hypothesized that the observed qualitative and quantitative variations in mucin secretion is linked to the reproductive cycle. Highlights The mucocytes present in the gill filaments of the clam produce an acid mucus, with sulfate residues and N-acetylglucosamine and fucose chains. In the foot, the subepithelial mucocytes produce an acidic, sulfate secretion with mannosylated residuals. The foot epithelium shows an acidic, sulfated mucus composition with N-acetylglucosamine, fucose and mannose chains. The results show that males have greater variability in mucus composition. The observed variation could be related to different energy allocation between sexes in the development of gametes.","PeriodicalId":56040,"journal":{"name":"European Zoological Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45465814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
