We collected samples from March to August at eight different stations in Haizhou Bay (China), a region with a high frequency of HABs, and used Illumina Novaseq high-throughput sequencing and multivariate statistical analysis to characterize the bacterial communities and their relationships with different environmental factors. We identified 27 phyla, 49 classes, 158 orders, 294 families, and 522 genera. Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Bacteroidia, Acidimicrobiia, Bacilli, Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Clostridia, and Acidobacteria were the most abundant classes, and Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria, and Cyanobacteria were the keystone phyla. Based on the Mantel test and redundancy analysis, temperature was the main environmental factor affecting the structure of the bacterial communities, followed by silicate, dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP), and dissolved oxygen (DO). Among the genera with high OTU abundance, Nautella was co-related positively with DO and negatively with salinity; Planktomarina was co-related positively with salinity and negatively with nitrate and nitrite. Certain families (Flavobacteriaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Clade_I (SAR11 clade)) and genera (Methylophaga, Alteromonas, Oleiphilus, Marinobacter, Bacillus, Nautella, and Vibrio) had associations with phytoplankton species that were responsible for HABs. This research provides new insights into the characteristics of the bacterial communities that occur in coastal areas that have HABs and provides detailed descriptions of the spatial and temporal changes in the structure of these communities.","PeriodicalId":56006,"journal":{"name":"Diversity-Basel","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135247358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two new parabathynellid species, Nipponbathynella yeongchunensis sp. nov. and N. gapcheonensis sp. nov., were found through groundwater sampling on riverbanks in South Korea. Nipponbathynella yeongchunensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from its congeners by the base socket of the two dorsal setae on the antennule’s first segment. Nipponbathynella gapcheonensis sp. nov. can be distinguished by the protopod of thoracopod II–IV with hairs. We provide morphological descriptions and remarks about the two new species with molecular information based on 18S rRNA and partial COI gene sequences. In addition, phylogenetic analysis, including Nipponbathynella Schminke, 1973, which had not been previously molecularly evaluated, was inferred. The results of the 18S rRNA gene phylogeny suggest a close relationship between the genera Nipponbathynella and Arisubathynella, as well as Europe–North American genera. We have also included a brief discussion and an identification key for the five known parabathynellid genera found in South Korea.","PeriodicalId":56006,"journal":{"name":"Diversity-Basel","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135247359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fusarium wilt and banana blood disease (BBD), two significant diseases that infect banana trees, are caused by Fusarium oxysporum and Ralstonia syzygii, respectively. They have caused a decline in crop yield, as they destroy trees, starting sequentially from the pseudostem to the fruit. The entire distribution of BBD and fusarium on a plantation can be understood using advanced geospatial information obtained from multispectral aerial photographs taken using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and a reliable data field for infected trees. Vegetation and soil indices derived from multispectral aerial photographs, such as the normalized difference vegetation index, the modified chlorophyll absorption ratio index, the normalized difference water index (NDWI), and soil pH, may have to be relied upon to explain the precise location of these two diseases. This study used a random forest algorithm to handle a large dataset consisting of multispectral and spectral models. The results show that the soil indices, soil pH, and NDWI are the most important variables for predicting the spatial distribution of these two diseases. Simultaneously, the plantation area affected by BBD is more extensive than that affected by fusarium if variations in planted banana cultivars are not considered.","PeriodicalId":56006,"journal":{"name":"Diversity-Basel","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135199929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While K. luansaensis sp. nov. occurs from the source of the Luansa further downstream to above the last of the three Sanshifolo Falls, K. maxi sp. nov. only occurs downstream of all these three major falls. In Kneria, males of about ≥ 33 mm LS have an opercular and a postopercular organ. The number of lamellae on the latter seems to contain some alpha-taxonomic information, although this requires further study as allometric changes occur at about ≤ 45 mm LS. Additional external morphological characters differ between sexes, i.e., the (i) pectoral fin width (wider in males than females), (ii) dorsal fin height (longer in males than females), and (iii) length of the longest ray of the lower caudal fin lobe (longer in males than females). Agriculture, fishing with ichthyotoxines, and logging are the most pressing threats on the Luansa and thus to both the new species. Their discovery in one of the rivers of the Kundelungu Plateau and its surroundings located outside the present-day boundaries of the Kundelungu National Park highlights the need for a refined and improved protection strategy for this freshwater key biodiversity area.","PeriodicalId":56006,"journal":{"name":"Diversity-Basel","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135387523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pomacea canaliculata is considered one of the world’s 100 worst invasive species. Major determinants of invasive species distribution are their environmental tolerances, and an understanding of correlations between local environmental variables (e.g., pH, concentration of dissolved oxygen) and genetic diversity is necessary to better prevent and manage the spread of invasive species. However, while such studies have demonstrated associations between the distribution and density of P. canaliculata and water quality correlates, the principal mechanisms relating genetic and these environmental correlates have not been fully articulated. Here, the correlation between physicochemical parameters and genetics of P. canaliculata were analyzed. The results showed that P. canaliculata among the six collection locations had robust genetic diversity, significant genetic differentiation, limited gene flow, and stable population dynamics. RDA analysis showed that genetic variation in P. canaliculata was significantly correlated with concentration of dissolved oxygen and pH. These results will provide a basis for effectively preventing and managing the spread of invasive species and identifying which habitats may be more at risk of invasion.","PeriodicalId":56006,"journal":{"name":"Diversity-Basel","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135425081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the monophyletic nature of the family Cyatholaimidae, it has been a topic of discussion among nematologists due to its lack of synapomorphic characteristics and overlapping generic diagnoses. Many genus-defining features consist of a combination of non-unique characters, which may not hold significant taxonomic importance. Consequently, most genera within the family are non-monophyletic according to phylogenetic findings. The absence of molecular data complicates the identification of taxonomically important characteristics that may have been previously overlooked. While the pore complex and the lateral pore-like structure have been suggested as potentially important traits, these insights are lacking in most recorded species, along with molecular data to confirm their significance in topology. Given the considerable amount of work required from the ground up, this study provides both morphological information (including taxonomic description, morphometric measurements, tabular key comparing key features to all valid congeners, illustration, and microscope photographs) and molecular data (partial sequences of three molecular regions, K2P distance comparison, and phylogenetic trees) for the two species discovered in Korea. The study also offers insights on potentially significant traits, such as the pore complex and other pore structures. The Korean specimen of Acanthonchus (Seuratiella) tridentatus resembles the original description regarding aspects such as the number and type of precloacal supplements, as well as the shape of the spicules and gubernaculum. However, variations are observed in the following characteristics: body ratio, nerve ring location, pharynx length, and the presence or absence of the oscelli. Our partial molecular sequences of the specimens also match identically with a single existing entry on NCBI identified as A. (S.) tridentatus. The new species, Paracanthonchus spongius sp. nov., is most similar to P. kamui in terms of the general shape of the body and gubernaculum but can be distinguished by differences in the number of precloacal supplements, amphid position, and gubernaculum ratio. The phylogenetic tree constructed based on the 28S rRNA region shows both species grouped within the monophyletic clade of Cyatholaimidae with high bootstrap support. However, achieving generic resolution of these species will require more molecular sequences of congeners to accumulate in the future.","PeriodicalId":56006,"journal":{"name":"Diversity-Basel","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135425512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The spatial distribution, abundance and diversity of natural communities of picocyanobacteria (PC) in estuaries of Khatanga, Indigirka and Kolyma rivers and adjacent shelves of the Laptev and East Siberian seas were studied in September 2017. The PC concentrations were higher in the estuaries than in the shelf stations of the seas. The abundance of PC was 1.25 × 106 cells/L, 0.42 × 106 cells/L and 1.58 × 106 cells/L in the surface layer of Khatanga, Indigirka and Kolyma estuaries, respectively. The contribution of PC to total autumn picophytoplankton abundance averaged 6% and 3% in the Khatanga and Indigirka estuaries and reached 5% in the Kolyma estuary. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and ITS region clone libraries revealed picocyanobacterial sequences related to marine Synechococcus subclusters 5.1-I, 5.2 and 5.3. Of the phylotypes from Synechococcus S5.1-I and S5.2 that were found, only several were discovered earlier, while the remaining clones were unique. Two groups of phylotypes (clades A and E) were found that were not closely similar to those previously described in both marine and freshwater habitats. It can be expected that a more detailed study of the phytoplankton of the Arctic seas will further expand our understanding of the diversity of these key components of the food chains of oceanic biocenoses.","PeriodicalId":56006,"journal":{"name":"Diversity-Basel","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135425773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Biodiversity National Key Ecological Functional Areas are types of PAs that were designated by the State Council of China for the implementation of biodiversity conservation. However, regional comparative assessment results of biodiversity conservation effectiveness in different county-level administrative units are still lacking. In this study, we developed a reference condition index to represent the ecological background, and we then constructed a conservation effectiveness index to compare the conservation efforts among 131 counties in seven Biodiversity National Key Ecological Functional Areas. The results showed the following: (1) The biological background could be well reflected by the reference condition index. The Tropical Rainforest Ecological Function Area in Mountain Areas in the Middle of Hainan Island had the best biological background, while the Desert Ecological Function Area on the Northwest Qiangtang Plateau had the worst. (2) The biodiversity conservation effectiveness of the Desert Ecological Function Area on the Northwest Qiangtang Plateau was the best, and that of the Wetland Ecological Function Area of the Three River Plain was worst. (3) Among the 131 counties, Taibai County in the Biodiversity Ecological Function Area of Qinba Mountain performed best, while Fujin City in the Wetland Ecological Function Area of the Three River Plain performed worst. Our study could provide valuable insights for the transfer payment. Meanwhile, it can also supply a scientific reference for the management of Biodiversity National Key Ecological Functional Areas to enhance biodiversity.","PeriodicalId":56006,"journal":{"name":"Diversity-Basel","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135386934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The symbiotic relationship between AMF and plants serves as a classic illustration. These fungi play a regulatory role in the growth and development of plants, especially in facilitating the absorption of P and carbon molecules by plants. While there has been a growing body of research on the community assembly of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in recent decades, our knowledge of the processes governing the coexistence of these AMF communities influenced by P in agroecosystems remains limited. To investigate the impact of various P fertilizers on AMF communities in temperate agroecosystems, this study was conducted using soils sourced from wheat–maize rotation farmland at Henan Agricultural University Yuanyang Base. With the Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing technique, we systematically examined the taxonomic composition of soil AMF at the Yuanyang Base of Henan Agricultural University in a wheat–maize rotation agricultural field. Our primary objective was to unravel the mechanisms behind AMF community assembly and stability under varying P gradient fertilization conditions. Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) analysis revealed significant differences among AMF communities in field soil subjected to various treatments (p < 0.05). A torus translations test demonstrated positive associations with the three treatments in 36 out of the 51 examined AMF operational taxonomic units (OTUs), making up 70.59% (p < 0.05) of the results. Furthermore, 37.84% (14/37) of the OTUs displayed preferences for the low P concentration treatment, while 34.29% (12/35) and 32.26% (10/31) favored medium and high P concentrations, respectively. An analysis of the Normalized Stochasticity Ratio (NST) and Checkerboard Score (C-score) indicated that in temperate agroecosystems, deterministic processes predominantly governed AMF in all treatment groups, with high P conditions exerting a stronger influence than low or medium P conditions. This study underscores the profound impact of long-term P fertilizer application on AMF community structures within temperate agricultural systems employing wheat–maize rotation. Additionally, it highlights the dominant role played by deterministic processes in shaping the assembly of AMF communities in these temperate agricultural systems that use P fertilizers. These findings emphasize the need for balanced nutrient management, particularly concerning P, to ensure the stability of AMF communities.","PeriodicalId":56006,"journal":{"name":"Diversity-Basel","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135387291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
