We observed strong interindividual and seasonal variation in the bill colour of captive female House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) and describe two colour traits by using a simple categorization: i) the presence or absence of yellow markings on the upper mandible and ii) whether the female bill is light horn-coloured or dark brown. In spring, females display either light horn-coloured or dark, almost black, bills and half of the birds have yellow markings on the upper mandible. However, this changes markedly when the birds start breeding. In our observation, after the first brood, the proportion of individuals with yellow markings was significantly lower and in none of the females that raised offspring this trait was present. However, during the non-reproductive period in autumn, the yellow pigmentation of the upper mandible became visible in all individuals. Furthermore, the proportion of females with light bills increased from pre-breeding to the non-reproductive stage. The distinct differences in bill colouration together with the seasonal changes may indicate a potential signalling function and might serve in sexual selection.
","PeriodicalId":55999,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ornithology","volume":"167 2","pages":"593-597"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2026-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12989020/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147470152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is often unclear which aspects of habitat change are responsible for the decline of specific species. Physiological studies can help identify potential stressors and elucidate causal relationships between habitat change and species decline. In this study, we measured the heterophil-to-lymphocyte (H:L) ratio as an indicator of long-term physiological stress and ecological pressures, such as pathogen exposure or risk of injury, in the tropical understorey insectivore Cabanis's Greenbul (Placid) (Phyllastrephus cabanisi placidus). We then related this ratio to fragment size and forest degradation (canopy cover and vertical vegetation structure). Greenbuls breeding in forest areas with low canopy cover tend to have higher H:L ratios than those breeding in areas with high canopy cover, indicating that low canopy cover creates challenging conditions for greenbuls during breeding. Unexpectedly, however, greenbuls had higher H:L ratios in the largest, most intact forest fragment. These higher H:L ratios in larger fragments may reflect physiological and immunological adjustments to higher ecological pressures, such as predation, parasite prevalence, and competition for territories, due to intact trophic networks. This study therefore advocates concerted efforts to preserve large forest fragments, while smaller fragments should be rehabilitated to strengthen the ecological corridors and networks of these key biodiversity areas, which are of high conservation priority within the isolated mountain peaks of the Taita Hills in Kenya.

Supplementary information: The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10336-025-02321-0.
","PeriodicalId":55999,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ornithology","volume":"167 2","pages":"501-512"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2026-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12988911/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147469930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although personality traits-consistent individual differences in behavior across time and contexts-may affect an animal's home range size, we still lack a breadth of empirical studies across systems to fully appreciate this influence. Here, we tested the relationship between behavioral responses and home range size in two Darwin's finch species on Floreana Island: the critically endangered and range-restricted Medium Tree Finch (Camarhynchus pauper) and the common and widespread Small Ground Finch (Geospiza fuliginosa). Using a combination of rapid-assessment assays during both short-term captivity and in the field, we measured exploration and aggressiveness in males from both species. We then used radio telemetry to measure each bird's home range size over a week-long period. We predicted that (1) fast-exploring individuals would have larger home ranges, and (2) more aggressive individuals would have smaller home ranges. We found that Medium Tree Finches had smaller home ranges than Small Ground Finches, that exploratory behavior was positively correlated with home range size only in Small Ground Finches, and that, in both species, individuals' aggressiveness was negatively correlated with home range size, whereby the more aggressive individuals occupied smaller home ranges. We conclude that behavioral responses that align with major personality traits can predict home range size, which may provide an important tool for the conservation and management of endangered species when, for example, selecting individuals with different personality profiles for reintroduction.

Supplementary information: The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10336-024-02215-7.
","PeriodicalId":55999,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ornithology","volume":"166 1","pages":"247-261"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11779779/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143082262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
