Thirty-three unpublished letters in the archive of the Chevening Estate, now at the Kent History and Library Centre in Maidstone, therefore offer scholars an unprecedented perspective on du Bouchet's life, on her continuing relationship with Chesterfield, and on their mutual concerns about the health and education of their son. These letters, all written in French by Chesterfield to du Bouchet over a thirty-year period, also provide an intimate view of the Earl's debilitating deafness, of his hopes for his son, and of his affection for — and occasional frustration with — his former mistress.
","PeriodicalId":55946,"journal":{"name":"Journal for Eighteenth-Century Studies","volume":"48 2","pages":"105-118"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2025-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/1754-0208.12982","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144074734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Her trip starts from her home in Birmingham and takes her through much of Derbyshire, with visits to Leicester and Nottingham towards the end of the journey. The diary offers a rich and vivid account of the sociability of a female member of the middling class, and of the trials that could involve, and sheds light both on Hutton's earlier life, and on the conventions and social mores of the time. The introduction contextualizes the journal and points to some of the challenges in exactly how it might be read.
","PeriodicalId":55946,"journal":{"name":"Journal for Eighteenth-Century Studies","volume":"48 1","pages":"47-70"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2024-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/1754-0208.12975","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143431425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article explores the connections that the Riggio family interweaved with societies around them and investigates their role as cross-agents in Sicily. Its intent is to investigate the relationship between their cross-agency and the materiality around them, by considering the capacity of architecture, as a comprehensive space made of walls, floor, ceiling, furniture, frescoes, and so on, to actively affect people's attitudes and behaviours. The article argues that the eclectic collection, constructing the international trait of the couple, stressed their alignment with both the hybrid taste introduced by the Bourbon monarchs of Spain and the politics underlying this taste.
","PeriodicalId":55946,"journal":{"name":"Journal for Eighteenth-Century Studies","volume":"48 1","pages":"71-91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2024-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143431630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is the view that is challenged in the present article. It is demonstrated how the Social Contract cannot, in fact, be more than a partial solution to the problems defined by the Second Discourse, and it is pointed out how Rousseau's Project for Corsica is a far more plausible answer to the challenges presented by him in the earlier work. This conclusion has significant consequences for our understanding of Rousseau's political philosophy in general, as well as his position in relation to later theoretical currents in political philosophy.
","PeriodicalId":55946,"journal":{"name":"Journal for Eighteenth-Century Studies","volume":"48 1","pages":"29-45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2024-11-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143431496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
