More and more often, not only the Southern Europe inhabitants, but also those from the Central and Northern Europe are exposed to thermal stress. Nature Based Solutions (NBS) play a key role in mitigation, i.e. the process of alleviating the negative effects of climate change in highly urbanized areas. \u0000The main objective of this study is to answer the question whether the planned spatial activities involving the use of NBS solutions in the New Centre of Lodz contribute to the improvement of the urban spaces’ microclimate and the thermal comfort of people in the external environment. The subject of the work is the microclimate of urban spaces, understood as a climatic conditions set, in particular thermal conditions, in a given, small area. The spatial scope of the work covers a 30-hectare part of the New Centre of Lodz limited by the following streets: Kilińskiego, Narutowicza, Piotrkowska, Tuwima, which is currently undergoing a large-area revitalization process. In order to determine the microclimate conditions and thermal comfort, numerical simulations conducted in the ENVI-met program were used.

Their reliability assessment is then needed. The key question is whether a particular structure can be preserved ‘as it is’, or needs to be strengthened, or whether it needs to be replaced. Unnecessary replacements of existing structures may be avoided and the remaining service life of existing steel structures may be authorized by: using advanced reliability verification techniques, optimizing target reliability, and obtaining data for a specific site or structure. In this contribution, the application of advanced reliability approaches is illustrated by the assessment of an existing steel structure. The case study demonstrates that such approaches may significantly improve assessment and allow to increase the load-bearing capacity of the structure (in the case under investigation by 10 to 20%). Improvements in reliability assessment are attributed to the use of an optimal target reliability level, case-specific statistical parameters and probabilistic distributions of the basic variables, and adjusted partial factors.

To accomplish the European Union's climate, energy and environmental goals, action is needed to achieve high levels of energy efficiency and low environmental damage. Among the energy–intensive sectors, construction deserves a distinction due to its leading share in gross energy consumption in developed countries. Therefore, it is necessary, and at the same time more and more popular, to analyse the environmental loads generated in individual phases and throughout the life cycle of building objects. This subject is also gaining importance in the context of the recent increases in the prices of energy carriers, which forces the search for new construction and exploitation solutions in line with the philosophy of sustainable development and the circular economy. The aim of the analysis was to assess the environmental consequences in the life cycle of a real commercial building located in Janikowo (Kuyavian–Pomeranian Voivodeship), which was carried out using the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology. The obtained results indicated the dominance of the facility exploitation phase in the level of cumulative environmental loads.

This article addresses phenomenon of visual pollution examins the influence of based on the example of selected buildings located in Lublin’s City Centre. The article analyses the placement of advertising signs, and categorizes of most technical and social problems that it entails. The relation between the occurrence of outdoor advertising and the increase in anti-social behaviour in commercialised space, raised in the article, could be a very important topic for further research. The results of the conducted study reveal that the installation of advertising billboards irreversibly damages the facades of buildings, which is especially visible when the advertisements are removed. The article complements the study on outdoor advertising, drawing attention to one of its little-discussed, technical aspects. Consequently, it may serve as a starting point for further discussion on the subject.

It is not a new material, but its potential is not utilised to its full degree. Taking into account the most important advantages of sawdust concrete - lower density and greater thermal and acoustic insulation than ordinary concrete - it is worth to consider the possibilities of its usage in construction wider than currently . In order to present the properties of sawdust concrete, the review of contemporary technical literature has been performed. \u0000For the production of sawdust concretes mineralized sawdust from various types of trees, ordinary cements, mineral aggregates and water, are used. The usage of additives and admixtures is also allowed. The properties of the finished sawdust concrete are mainly influenced by the proportion of its components, especially the amount of fine aggregates replaced by sawdust. The construction products made of sawdust concrete are characterized by a low coefficient of thermal conductivity λ and soundproofing properties. In bending tests, a simply supported sawdust concrete beam behaves similar to a regular concrete beam, cracks first appear in the tension zone. Tensile strength, compressive strength and Young's modulus of sawdust concrete products depend on the proportion of components and the method of sawdust preparation before applying in the sawdust concrete-mix. Compared to ordinary concrete, the obtained values for sawdust concrete are lower, but partially fall within the ranges for the lower classes of ordinary concrete. \u0000There are several possible applications of sawdust concrete in construction. One of the perspectives is to use it to build walls in buildings that require soundproofing between rooms, or to replace wood with it when renovating old buildings. However, further tests of sawdust concrete are needed in terms of the most favourable composition for its mechanical properties, and to define the standards according to which sawdust concrete elements should be produced.

One of the factors which significantly affects the climate and bioclimate of urban areas is wind. Wind can cause discomfort to pedestrians or heat loss in buildings, if the wind speed around buildings is too high. The paper presents two examples of research conducted by the author, related to the issues of wind flow in built-up areas, based on the numerical simulations. The numerical simulations become an increasingly frequently used tool to determine the wind climate. Simulation results provide designers with important information on the influence of the buildings and their layout on the local changes in airflow. They allow testing of alternative solutions and effectiveness of various remedial measures.

This translates directly into society, in both material and emotional terms. The severity of the injury in a road event depends largely on the speed of the vehicles. Excessive vehicle speed is of particular concern in incidents involving vulnerable road users. As confirmed by literature analysis and research, in most cases drivers do not respect the speed limits introduced by the road signs. Existing solutions allow to introduce permanent or temporary speed control. This paper investigates speeding and driver behaviour in built-up areas near schools and pedestriancrossings. The aim of the research described in the paper is to determine the influence of the effectiveness of police actions on speed reduction and improvement of road safety.

A dozen or so institutions, flagship examples of large contemporary hospitals, were selected for the study. The research focused on internal zones, in particular the reception area linked to the main communication system of the hospital, which functions as a public space offering a range of services and provides space for communication, waiting and meetings. This work aims to determine design trends in the location and forms of general zones, their characteristics and proportion to other zones in hospitals, architectural features and functional-spatial solutions. The relationships between the shape of the hospital, its internal general zones, and their percentage share in the total building area were examined. Art and greenery in these zones were also investigated, along with the presence of natural lighting, the colours, and the type of finishing materials used in this type of space today. The study revealed noticeable differences between the form of general zones in large contemporary as well as 20th-century hospitals. In addition to their form, the arrangement of zones has also changed, and they often do not resemble a hospital space. Art and greenery play an increasingly important role. The general zone is a hospital’s essential communication hub, constituting the main public space where people may meet.

Most studies in literature deal with only one dimension of the problem of environmental components of sustainability. These studies discuss entities at only one level (cities, buildings, etc.), and one layer (green, smart, etc.) in selected dimensions. The literature includes no models that claim to provide an integrated assessment of entities’ performance in the 3D Cartesian system. The presently available models do not offer solutions that would be applicable in practice. SIMURG (A performance-based and Sustainability-Oriented Integration Model Using Relational database architecture to increase Global competitiveness of construction industry) proposes using layers and their KPI sets in the assessment process. In addition to philosophical, organisational, integrational, and computational models, this study aims to develop a lean architecture of a relational database model by eliminating ineffective solutions in the practical dimension, i.e. in the computer model. The model can be used by individuals to help them choose built environment whose characteristics match their expectations. Public authorities can utilise the model to increase the level of accountability, transparency, and legitimacy in their decision-making processes.
