This representative void was filled, mostly in the areas in which poverty and social problems are particularly stark, by political offerings in the form of technical services, small favours, guidance and support for administrative practices. These were a variety of political exchanges compared to traditional party clientelism, amounting to the grouping consensus of small systems, that are more unstable and more precisely defined on a local level. Emblematic examples of these new networks of exchanges are that of Caf (a tax assistance centre) and public services. The article offers an interpretation of historical changes of clientelism and interprets these new forms of groupings of consensus as an outcome of the crisis of cronyism of the twentieth century. The former stands as a systematic, comprehensive and cross-cultural look at researches in the field of teachers’ and schools’ effectiveness, by incorporating a diverse set of theoretical approaches and by offering a focused insight into the Italian case. The latter relies on a quali-quantitative research conducted in Italy on local and national scale in order to profile and assess the population of excellent students. After his path-breaking ethnographies of scientific laboratories and the development, alongside M. Callon, of Actor-Network-Theory, his recent works focus mainly on political ecology and the issue of global warming. In this interview, we have asked Latour to retrace the path that, following a more linear trajectory than one might expect, brought him from the sociology of scientific knowledge to deal with political ecology.According to Latour, the concerns that stood at the core of his works on science and technology can provide deeper insights into the politics of climate change. What geologists have recently named as the “Anthropocene” (that is, our current geological era marked by anthropogenic climate change) is a hybrid entity just like the socio-technical networks he had described in Laboratory Life and Science in Action. Only by developing a social science that is hospitable to non-human entities is it possible to imagine a way to deal politically with environmental issues.The ecological crisis calls for a readjustment of political affects similar to the one that was brought about by the social question between XIX and XX centuries, that is, one that entails an alliance between social sciences, politics, science, and arts. This definition imposes to consider the value and current market price as not necessarily coincident: in social reality, both collective processes of price formation and collective processes meant to justify them or to consider them unjustified are to be found. The author reminds that such tension between value and price has been constant in the European economic thought since Summa theologica until the late Spanish Scholasticism of the XVII century. Already thwarted by the first treatises on currency, it has gained new strength in the theories of value/labour from Smith to Ricardo, to Marx until, finally and partially, Mill. In this stage it has been attempted to make labour a measure of value and hence the final criterium of price definition in situations of balance between supply and demand. The difficulties of such measurement attempt have certainly fostered the so-called marginalist revolution, which is characterized by the abolition of the tension between value and price and for having chosen as object of study the prices alone.As in the scientific revolutions theorized by Kuhn, the new paradigm has got rid from the tangles and aporias of the former paradigm but has paid the cost of a depletion of socio-economic analysis: it would fit to speak of a regressive revolution.
