The study sample consisted of 143 non-financial firms listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) for the period from 2000 to 2020.Motivation for the study: While prior studies have found that managerial ability drives corporate decisions and performance, there remains a dearth in empirical studies linking managerial ability with CH-SOA.Main findings: This study found evidence of the existence of optimal cash holding levels and that the average speed of partial adjustment is 75.6% for South African firms. However, the speed of adjustment was lower in firms managed by highly able managers.Practical implications: The study has practical implications for managers, particularly, low-ability managers, who can learn how their more able counterparts manage and adjust cash holdings. Policy makers can clearly observe how different institutional and macroeconomic conditions affect business proclivity to making or delaying investments by holding cash.Contribution: The study provides new evidence on how MA influences CH-SOA. Previous cash holdings studies have ignored the role of MA. Additionally, we provide evidence of the existence of optimal corporate cash holding levels using data from South African firms. We find that firms partially adjust any deviations from the optimal levels considering firm-specific, institutional and macroeconomic conditions.","PeriodicalId":55663,"journal":{"name":"Acta Commercii","volume":"5 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138952669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite these potential benefits, operations managers in a South African public hospital continue to favour manual systems over existing AI technologies within their units.Research purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a conceptual framework to facilitate the implementation of AI in a public hospital in South Africa.Motivation for the study: A gap was identified, highlighting the need for a conceptual framework that facilitates the successful implementation of AI in a public hospital. The aim is to ensure that operational managers fully embrace the benefits of AI, thereby improving the healthcare system.Research design, approach and method: A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design with a phenomenological research approach was adopted. Five phases were followed to develop a conceptual framework. Twelve individual interviews and two focus group interviews were conducted to collect data. Thematic data analysis was applied to extract and identify significant themes.Main findings: Three themes were identified: positive experiences related to AI, management and leadership processes in AI facilitation and challenges related to AI. These themes served as the foundation for the development of a conceptual framework.Practical/managerial implications: There is ambivalence in embracing AI in the units of this public hospital, and it will be addressed by this conceptual framework.Contribution/value-add: The proposed conceptual framework is designed to enable the operational managers in facilitating the implementation of AI in a public hospital setting. It serves as a valuable resource to promote the integration of AI technology in healthcare operations.","PeriodicalId":55663,"journal":{"name":"Acta Commercii","volume":"25 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138974861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mara","doi":"10.4102/ac.v23i1.1191","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4102/ac.v23i1.1191","url":null,"abstract":"Orientation: Problematic loans expose commercial banks to great risk. South African and Namibian banks are highly regulated and require a higher capital adequacy ratio to shield the banking system from default risk. However, such intense regulation distorts the cost of capital and denies equal access to many previously disadvantaged members of society previously excluded from banking services. Highly regulated banking therefore holds major implications for the country’s growth prospects.Research purpose: This theoretical paper examines the South African and Namibian banking systems, to understand the challenges in managing risk and creating greater stakeholder value. As the forerunner to an empirical investigation, it intended to understand scholarly views on sustainable banking practices and financial exclusion.Motivation for the study: Borrowing from the fields of strategic management and business psychology, this study unpacks the human role in executing sustainable banking practices.Research design, approach and method: Theoretical, abstract research, analysing recent research, was conducted to uncover current banking research trends in South Africa and Namibia.Main findings: Value creation, rather than compliance, should be prioritised, to achieve sustainable lending, risk management and inclusivity.Practical/managerial implications: Policy makers in the South African and Namibian financial services sectors may benefit from this theoretical research and use it to improve their ability to strike a balance between sustainable banking, increasing access to banking for the previously unbanked, and meeting regulator needs.Contribution/value-add: This study makes a theoretical contribution to the body of knowledge on sustainable banking, which is an emerging field globally.","PeriodicalId":55663,"journal":{"name":"Acta Commercii","volume":"7 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138586039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Organisational development (OD) appears to be the solution for improved service performance in PSOs.Research purpose: The main objective of this study was to develop an OD framework that could support long-term performance in a selected PSO.Motivation for the study: Integrated OD frameworks that can effectively guide the sustainable performance of PSOs are yet forthcoming in Southern Africa.Research design, approach and method: A qualitative approach was utilised to obtain semi-structured interview data from a purposive sample of management (N = 15) from a selected public sector institution. Theme analyses were applied to illicit themes for the data gathered.Main findings: The findings showed that participants perceive a misalignment between OD interventions and the performance imperatives of the PSO department. The participants highlighted several components that should be part of the OD framework to enhance performance. These included accurate diagnosis and evaluation, leadership and management development, operational factors (i.e. structure, processes and alignment), communication, inclusivity and profiling of employees.Practical/managerial implications: The study highlights the importance of management competence in driving OD interventions. The framework furthermore provides a guideline for management to implement change interventions to achieve the organisation’s strategic objectives.Contribution/value-add: A framework is presented that is specifically aimed at providing practical guidance for the design of OD interventions in PSOs.","PeriodicalId":55663,"journal":{"name":"Acta Commercii","volume":"9 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139240865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results show a strong agreement among the experts on the first four categories. The fifth (external) offers the lowest level of agreement, reminding that the higher education system is part of a broader contextual system; it should be understood within its operational context and time.Practical/managerial implications: Offering talent management practitioners and higher education leaders expert observations of the factors to consider while planning and implementing career management intervention programmes to enable academic career progression.Contribution/value-add: A comprehensive and systematic approach for career management, providing a framework for successfully managing academic careers across the various career stages.","PeriodicalId":55663,"journal":{"name":"Acta Commercii","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135870622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research purpose: The purpose was to investigate the impact that US macroeconomic news announcements have on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). Motivation for the study: Investment in financial markets is volatile. Globalisation means that greater economies’ macroeconomic news announcements could impact emerging financial markets. Knowing which announcements have an influence could improve investment decisions. Research design, approach and method: This study is qualitative, following secondary data analysis. Analysis was carried out using volatility modelling, paired with an event study to add robustness. Main findings: The generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (GARCH) models indicated that US macroeconomic news announcements made in relation to unemployment were statistically significant, with a negative impact on the JSE. This was supplemented by the event study in which interest rate announcements that were made in August 2008 (during the global financial crisis) were found to have a statistically significant impact on the JSE. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic did not appear to have a statistically significant impact in the results obtained from the event study. Practical/managerial implications: Investment industry professionals and policymakers should consider unemployment announcements from the US to enhance investment decisions while managing stock market volatility. Contribution/value-add: The results make a novel contribution towards the findings during the initial COVID-19 period and generalisability of the method as well as the theoretical expansion of the theoretical application of globalisation on stock markets.","PeriodicalId":55663,"journal":{"name":"Acta Commercii","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135579269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mutezo","doi":"10.4102/ac.v23i1.1142","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4102/ac.v23i1.1142","url":null,"abstract":"Orientation: Among the numerous factors affecting small and medium enterprises’ (SMEs) ability to access funding, financial literacy or the lack thereof continues to rank high. The below-average levels of financial literacy among entrepreneurs inevitably restrict their access to finance, thereby adding to the already soaring rate of small business failure. Research purpose: The main research objective of this article is to determine the underlying financial literacy-financial access relationship among SMEs in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa. Motivation of the study: Understanding the relationship between financial literacy and financial access among small businesses is imperative as they are key players in economic development. Empirical literature outlining this relationship is sparse. Therefore, the study made an original empirical contribution to the financial literacy-financial access nexus in the metropolitan. Research design, approach and method: A quantitative descriptive research design was followed. The survey method was used to gather data, where structured questionnaires were distributed to the respondents. The study considered a targeted population of 5609 registered SMEs in Ekurhuleni with a sample size of 384 prospective participants. A total of 310 responses were obtained from the owners and managers of SMEs in the municipality. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences was used to compute all statitical analyses for the study. Descriptive statistics were used to establish the SMEs’ financial literacy and financial access relationship. Data were analysed using factor analysis, regression analysis and correlation analysis. Main findings: Entrepreneurs in Ekurhuleni were found to have a limited understanding of basic financial concepts implying low levels of financial knowledge. Additionally, the study established that financial access was significantly challenging for most SMEs. The findings further revealed a positive relationship between financial literacy and financial access. Practical managerial/ implications: The knowledge from this article may assist entrepreneurs and financial institutions in bridging the financial literacy gap, thereby increasing the likelihood of accessing funding by SMEs. It may also assist in influencing the development and implementation of micro and macroeconomics policies to raise financial literacy levels and leniency from financing sources towards SMEs.","PeriodicalId":55663,"journal":{"name":"Acta Commercii","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134960946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
