Fewer studies have involved African American women who have completed college, and even fewer numbers of studies have involved African American women of middle and high SES with bachelor's and graduate degrees. Methods: Quantitative analysis, using analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson's product moment statistics, and stepwise multiple regression, was performed. Utilizing Pender's health promotion model, the relationships among weight, body image, self-efficacy, stress, and health-promoting behaviors were determined in a purposive sampling of 167 subjects who were members of an organization of women in the Metropolitan Washington, D.C., area, whose membership consists primarily of college-educated African American members. These participants were compared for the association of weight, body image, self-efficacy, a...","PeriodicalId":55589,"journal":{"name":"Bariatric Nursing and Surgical Patient Care","volume":"5 1","pages":"305-312"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1089/BAR.2010.9992","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60815420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Findings suggest that the hospitalized morbidly obese patient (BMI > 35) is at high risk, in particular for falls. Nurses recounted falls resulting from equipment failure or breakdown and also falls of unknown origin where the patient was simply found lying on the floor. Near misses were also described. Recommendations include facilities assessment, including the obese patient in fall risk assessments; the establishment of a dedicated bariatric unit; and the report and analysis of near misses.","PeriodicalId":55589,"journal":{"name":"Bariatric Nursing and Surgical Patient Care","volume":"5 1","pages":"243-247"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1089/BAR.2010.9910","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60814494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both of these requirements may be threatened in the case of the adolescent consenting to weight loss surgery. The informed consent rights of adolescents present significant ethical and legal concerns and considerations for teens, parents of teens, and bariatric nurses. Issues of informed consent and care of a special and vulnerable patient population are presented. The ethical issues pertaining to these processes are described herein along with the special challenges that occur when things go wrong.","PeriodicalId":55589,"journal":{"name":"Bariatric Nursing and Surgical Patient Care","volume":"5 1","pages":"231-234"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1089/BAR.2010.9912","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60814903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
