S. Lo from Vietnam was confirmed to be a misidentification of S. coccinea H. S. Lo. Coincidentally, Spiradiclis coccinea is a species previously known only from China, and represents a new record for the flora of Vietnam. True specimens of S. purpureocaerulea were collected by the authors in Thanh Hua Province (Vietnam) in 2017. Therefore, we report S. coccinea and S. purpureocaerulea as new records for the flora of Vietnam here. Detailed descriptions and color photographs of the two species and a key to the five species of Spiradiclis in Vietnam are also provided.","PeriodicalId":55556,"journal":{"name":"Adansonia","volume":"115 1","pages":"291 - 296"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79251284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The assignation of species to Cranfillia or Austroblechnum could be difficult due to their morphological similarities. Focusing on Austroblechnum bakeri (C.Chr.) Gasper & V.A.O.Dittrich, and based on new molecular and morphological evidence, we show that Austroblechnum bakeri actually belongs to the genus Cranfillia as Cranfillia bakeri (C.Chr.) Vázquez Ferreira & S. Molino, comb. nov. This new combination extends the distribution of the genus Cranfillia to Madagascar and East Africa. Additionally, we propose that partially adnate basal pairs of pinnae and deflexed first pair of pinnae could represent new diagnostic characters to distinguish Cranfillia from Austroblechnum. Finally, we provide a taxonomic treatment of Cranfillia bakeri with all recognized synonyms, and conduct detailed lectotypification for Blechnum bakeri C.Chr.","PeriodicalId":55556,"journal":{"name":"Adansonia","volume":"1 1","pages":"279 - 289"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74842462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I examined the gender expression over two entire flowering seasons in Sedum praealtum A. DC. (Crassulaceae) in Central Veracruz, Mexico. Specifically, I studied the floral longevity, sexual-phase duration, flower opening within an inflorescence and sex ratio in the species. I observed that the 8-days flower initiated in male-phase and then switched to female-phase. An extended time of pollen presentation by gradual anthers dehiscence caused an incomplete protandry in the species. The basal-positioned floral buds reached anthesis sooner than the distal-positioned floral buds, resembling an acropetal flowering sequence. Inflorescences production ceased in the middle of the flowering season, whereas flower opening remained constant over reproductive season of the species. The opening of flowers in successive cohorts linked to changes in the flower sexual-phase phenology caused an initial sex expression toward maleness and a balanced sexual expression from the peak to the end of reproductive season in the population sampled. This study highlights the important influence that variations in onset and duration of sexual-phase of flowers can have on sex expression in flowering plants.","PeriodicalId":55556,"journal":{"name":"Adansonia","volume":"73 1","pages":"241 - 247"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86347126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whereas osmophores have been well-documented in flowers of several families, they are barely mentioned in the Asteraceae. The aims of this study are to: 1) determine the occurrence of osmophores in corollas of 39 species of the tribe Onoserideae and the only species of Famatinantheae with histochemical methods; and 2) analyze the morphology and structure of osmophores in these groups. Histochemical and histological techniques revealed osmophores in the marginal and in the central corollas of Famatinanthus Ariza & S.E. Freire and Plazia Ruiz & Pav. at the apex and margin of the corolla lobes, and at the sinuses. Osmophores were confirmed following positive staining reactions for TIOFH and TIOFH3 (Neutral Red, Oil Red O, and Iodine-Potassium-Iodide); the samples reacted negatively for Benedict's test for detecting reducing sugars. The osmophores found in this study are constituted uniquely by a papillose or non-papillose epidermis, or they extend into the mesophyll forming scent glands. In both cases, they are associated to stomata and starch grains. The corollas of the other species of Onoserideae did not react positively for osmophores.","PeriodicalId":55556,"journal":{"name":"Adansonia","volume":"660 ","pages":"227 - 239"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72504597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
