This study investigated the relative influence of habitat preference, feeding behavior, trophic level, and biological traits on MP ingestion in 11 fish species (N = 297) collected from the highly industrialized Iskenderun Bay, Northeastern Mediterranean Sea. Because MP abundance data exhibited substantial overdispersion, both Poisson and Negative Binomial Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) were evaluated, with the Negative Binomial framework demonstrating markedly superior performance based on the akaike information criterion (AIC) and dispersion diagnostics. The final model identified habitat-related exposure pathways as the dominant predictors of MP ingestion. Relative to the benthopelagic reference group, demersal species exhibited significantly higher expected MP abundance (β = 0.99, p < 0.001), whereas pelagic-neritic species showed significantly lower MP loads (β =  − 1.13, p < 0.001). Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) weight was positively associated with MP abundance (β = 0.16, p < 0.001), suggesting that anatomical retention capacity may influence particle accumulation. In contrast to conventional biomagnification expectations, the trophic level displayed a significant negative relationship with MP abundance (β =  − 0.47, p = 0.0047), indicating a potential trophic dilution pattern. Residual diagnostics performed using the DHARMa framework indicated satisfactory model adequacy, while zero-inflated models did not substantially improve model performance. The findings suggest that habitat-mediated exposure, particularly sediment-associated pathways, may exert stronger influence on MP ingestion than feeding behavior alone. Overall, this study highlights the importance of combining ecological trait analysis with robust statistical modeling approaches to understand MP uptake dynamics in Mediterranean fish communities.

","PeriodicalId":55489,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences","volume":"88 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2026-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s00027-026-01334-y.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148380848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigated how environmental conditions affect litter decomposition and fungal communities across a water-level gradient in the Baiyangdian wetland. Standardized litter bags were incubated in soil from three distinct habitats, viz. Phragmites australis (reed) platforms, water-land ecotones, and permanently flooded areas, to investigate the degradation of litter components, transformation of soil carbon, and the driving mechanisms of soil fungal communities during a 240-day litter decomposition period. The results indicated that water-land ecotone conditions significantly enhanced litter decomposition (k = 0.066) and promoted the accumulation of recalcitrant carbon fractions, as evidenced by a marked increase in the proportion of alkyl carbon (Alkyl C) from 45.37% to 58.82%. In contrast, prolonged flooding inhibited hydrolase activities, resulting in reduced carbon conversion efficiency, with O-alkyl carbon (O-alkyl C) decreasing by only 4.20%. However, flooding favored the physical accumulation of soil organic carbon (SOC), which increased by 1.87%. Fungal communities exhibited distinct network topological structures under varying water-level regimes, with the highest proportion of positive correlations (77.88%) observed in the water-land ecotone. Water-level drove a marked shift in the dominant fungi, most notably a dramatic rise of Westerdykella under the water-land ecotone. Structural equation modeling further revealed that water-level fluctuations significantly affected litter residual mass (β =  −0.896, p < 0.001) and soil properties (β = 0.766, p < 0.05). These environmental changes altered fungal network topology and shaped key enzyme activities, ultimately shaping carbon cycling pathways. These findings provide critical insights into the mechanisms by which environmental factors and microorganisms jointly modulate wetland plant litter decomposition and carbon cycling.

","PeriodicalId":55489,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences","volume":"88 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2026-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148380939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the study reported here, we investigated environmental factors, particularly salinity, regulating the abundance and morphology of an invasive estuarine species, Gulf Killifish Fundulus grandis, in the Pecos River, Texas, USA affected by anthropogenic salinization. An analysis of 20 physical, chemical, and biotic variables indicates that salinity was the only factor significantly related to F. grandis abundance. Fundulus grandis was more abundant and made up a greater percentage of the fish assemblage at moderate to high salinity levels of between 5.2 and 12. Salinity did not significantly affect F. grandis body shape or meristic traits. Morphometric analysis revealed variation in F. grandis shape related to total length and sex, with an interaction between length and sex. Males tended to be more robust than females at a given size, and body depth increased with total length. Low salinity limits the distribution of F. grandis and promotes higher native fish diversity in the Pecos River. The salinity preference of F. grandis, coupled with temporal increases in salinity from anthropogenic activity, likely contributed to the invasion success of F. grandis, including its range expansion, and increased abundance in the Pecos River. Protection of freshwater springs is essential to mitigating the impacts of F. grandis and maintaining native biodiversity.

","PeriodicalId":55489,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences","volume":"88 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2026-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148380940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Taking Weishan Lake in the North China Plain as the study area, we integrated multisource remote sensing data (Sentinel-2, Landsat-5 & 8 and moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS)) to build a dense normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series. Based on the life-history and spectral features of curly-leaf pondweed, we applied double logistic function fitting and the dynamic threshold method to extract key phenological metrics: start of growing season (SOS), end of growing season (EOS), and length of growing season (LOS). The results showed that during 2003–2023, the habitat area of curly-leaf pondweed followed a logistic growth pattern, expanding rapidly throughout the lake from 2009 to 2019 and then declining and shifting southwestward under human interference after 2019. Although the interannual phenological trends of curly-leaf pondweed were insignificant, the standard deviations of EOS and LOS increased markedly, indicating enhanced spatial heterogeneity. Water quality (especially total phosphorus) strongly regulated the habitat area variation of curly-leaf pondweed, and water temperature dominated its phenological variations, with June water temperature significantly affecting EOS and LOS. Water depth induced a lakeshore-to-lake-center gradient in the phenology of curly-leaf pondweed, particularly for SOS. Human harvesting further reshaped the phenological spatiotemporal patterns of curly-leaf pondweed, especially EOS. This study provides insights into curly-leaf pondweed management and remote sensing-based phenological mapping.

","PeriodicalId":55489,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences","volume":"88 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2026-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148323602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we developed a macroinvertebrate-based MMI for assessing the ecological health of tributary streams in the Hanjiang River Basin, a key water source for China’s South-to-North Water Diversion Project. We established a framework for systematically screening candidate metrics across taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic facets, while accounting for the influence of anthropogenic disturbance, spatial structure, and natural environmental gradients. The screening process excluded all functional and phylogenetic (taxonomic distinctness) diversity indices. This pattern may be associated with high functional redundancy within the local species pool and a paradoxical increase of taxonomic distinctness under disturbance, reflecting an environmental filtering process that favors tolerant yet taxonomically disparate lineages. The final MMI included five metrics related to pollution tolerance (tolerant taxa richness), functional traits (% Clingers), and taxonomic composition (% EPT richness, % Chironomidae richness, and Coleoptera richness), which demonstrated high sensitivity to human disturbance with minimal confounding effects. The MMI effectively distinguished among reference, moderately impacted, and severely degraded conditions, and showed stable performance across temporal and spatial validation datasets. Overall, our results suggest that a structured, multistep screening framework can yield parsimonious and effective indices for bioassessment. As bioassessment science evolves toward integrating multiple biodiversity facets and ecological processes, frameworks like ours will be essential for translating theoretical advances into tools that meaningfully inform conservation policy and management actions.

","PeriodicalId":55489,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences","volume":"88 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2026-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148323249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigates solute dynamics, trace element mobility, and long-term water quality trends in the Thuthapuzha River, a west-flowing tributary of the Bharathapuzha River in the Southern Western Ghats, India. Multiseasonal sampling, integrated with long-term discharge and hydrochemical datasets, was employed to elucidate the dominant geochemical and hydrological controls and catchment processes. Major ion chemistry is characterized by the dominance of Ca2+, Na+, and HCO3−, indicating silicate weathering as the primary source of dissolved solutes, with mineral stability relations suggesting kaolinite formation under humid tropical conditions. Multivariate statistical analysis differentiates the geogenic control of major ions from the more complex behavior of trace elements, which is governed by redox conditions and adsorption–desorption processes associated with clay minerals and Fe–Mn oxides. Concentration–discharge relationships exhibit near-chemostatic behavior, reflecting stable subsurface contributions despite pronounced seasonal hydrological variability. Although the present water quality remains excellent, Mann–Kendall trend analysis (1990–2019) reveals a statistically significant increase in water quality index across all seasons, indicating gradual degradation of overall water quality. In addition, several physicochemical parameters and trace elements exhibit spatially variable but generally increasing downstream trends, suggesting emerging anthropogenic influence in the lower reaches of the basin. These long-term trends indicate a gradual deterioration of water quality in the system. This integrated assessment provides a process-based understanding of solute and trace element dynamics and establishes a baseline for detecting future environmental change in ecologically sensitive tropical montane catchments.

","PeriodicalId":55489,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences","volume":"88 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2026-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148323251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, the selective pressure of NPs on the balance between prokaryotic and eukaryotic picoplankton components under varying abiotic conditions is poorly understood. We investigated the effects of ZnO and CuO NPs (20–60 µg L−1) on a winter natural picophytoplankton community from the Black Sea (cyanobacterium Synechococcus spp. and picoeukaryotes) under conditions simulating the winter hydrological regime. A dose- and time-dependent toxic effect was observed. The prokaryotic component was significantly more sensitive than the eukaryotic one, especially to CuO NPs, which caused sustained suppression of cyanobacteria (their share dropped to 2–9%) and dominance of picoeukaryotes (up to 98%). ZnO NPs were less toxic, and their effect diminished over time, allowing the community to restore a balanced structure (≈50/50% by February). Correlation analysis revealed opposite modulation of toxicity by abiotic factors for the two groups. For picoeukaryotes, high light intensity and temperature synergistically enhanced toxicity (especially of CuO NPs), whereas a high N/P ratio acted as a strong protective factor. For cyanobacteria, the toxicity of ZnO NPs was also enhanced by light and mitigated by a high N/P ratio; however, the toxicity of CuO NPs paradoxically decreased with increasing temperature and sharply increased under a high N/P ratio. Thus, metal oxide NPs exert strong selective pressure on picophytoplankton community structure, with the direction of this pressure critically depending on NP type, species composition, and abiotic conditions. These findings have important implications for predicting ecological shifts in marine ecosystems under increasing NP pollution.

","PeriodicalId":55489,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences","volume":"88 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2026-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148281746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In environments subject to strong environmental variability, such as continental shelves, environmental filters exert a decisive influence on community composition, which may alternate across seasonal periods, leading to temporal variations in the structure and diversity of marine communities. This study aimed to investigate the organizational patterns of the metacommunity at small (north, central, and south sectors) and large spatial scales (continental margin) during two seasonal periods along a depth gradient on the northeastern Brazilian continental margin. Taxonomic α-diversity was higher in the southern sector and during the rainy periods. β-Diversity did not differ among sectors, but species composition exhibited high dissimilarity, particularly between the northern–southern and central–southern sectors, reflecting stronger species turnover during the rainy season, whereas richness differences predominated in the dry period. The metacommunity structure along the environmental gradient was predominantly Gleasonian at smaller spatial scales, with individualistic species responses and gradual shifts in composition, whereas quasi-Clementsian patterns emerged at broader scales, revealing groups of species with similar distributional limits and abrupt compositional changes. The metacommunity was primarily structured by environmental filters, with depth and gravel as the main predictors. Spatial processes had a limited influence and were associated with dispersal limitation, whereas most of the variation remained unexplained by the measured variables. Four lakes differing in salinity, nutrient levels, and morphometric features were sampled across distinct ecological contexts. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that phytoplankton communities varied significantly among the lakes. Species composition, primarily shaped by key environmental factors such as electrical conductivity (EC), total organic carbon (TOC), total phosphorus (TP), total suspended solids (TSS), pH, nitrate (NO3−), and temperature, had a strong association of 98.8%. Lake Gölbaşı was related to relatively high temperature and NO3− levels, conditions which favor species such as Lepocinclis fusiformis, Lepocinclis acus, Euglena agilis, Phacus caudatus, and Dolichospermum sp. Lake Burdur was associated with high EC, TP, TOC, TSS, and pH, supporting taxa like Lagerheimia ciliata, Lagerheimia genevensis, and Microcystis flos-aquae. Lake Dalyan, a brackish ecosystem, was separated in the ordination, with species such as Phacus limnophilus var. Species-specific eDNA assays targeting mitochondrial 12S rRNA were applied using quantitative PCR (qPCR) to filtered water samples collected concurrently with boat electrofishing at five sites in each of three rivers in New South Wales during autumn, 2021 and 2022. While eDNA concentrations were low, we identified significant positive correlations with relative biomass and abundance for both species, albeit strongest for bony herring, which unlike the mostly solitary Murray cod, occur in dense schools. Regardless of species, daily river discharge was negatively correlated with eDNA concentrations, possibly owing to dilution effects. The results support the feasibility of using eDNA to monitor fish populations in dynamic riverine systems, although future work is required to refine sampling protocols and better investigate the effects of various biotic and abiotic factors that might influence relationships.

","PeriodicalId":55489,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences","volume":"88 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2026-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s00027-026-01317-z.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148236680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
