In this paper, we present a method of generating all functional <italic>elementary</italic> circuit topologies. This paper uses combinatorics to ensure that <italic>all unique</italic> circuit topologies are generated and stored in a database. This database contains 582 two-transistor and 56 280 three-transistor functional and unique elementary circuit topologies. It is envisioned that the circuit topologies stored in the database can save design time and assist designers by both offering previously unknown circuit topologies and providing circuit topologies for further optimizations. To give an example of how this vision can be used in practice, a search for all amplifier circuits was conducted that resulted in 5177 circuit topologies, some previously unknown, out of 56 862 three-transistor elementary circuit topologies. <italic>Résumé</italic>—La conception de circuits analogiques avec de nouvelles topologies est souvent très difficile car elle nécessite non seulement une expertise en conception de circuits, mais aussi une intuition de la façon dont différents circuits élémentaires peuvent fonctionner lorsqu’ils forment un plus grand circuit. Dans cet article, nous présentons une méthode de génération de toutes les topologies de circuits élémentaires fonctionnels. Cet article utilise la combinatoire pour garantir que toutes les topologies de circuits uniques sont générées et stockées dans une base de données. Cette base de données contient 582 topologies de circuits élémentaires fonctionnels et uniques à deux transistors et 56 280 à trois transistors. Il est envisagé que les topologies de circuit stockées dans la base de données permettent d’économiser du temps de conception et d’aider les concepteurs à la fois à offrir des topologies de circuits inconnues et à fournir des topologies de circuits pour d’autres optimisations. Pour donner un exemple de la façon dont cette vision peut être utilisée dans la pratique, une recherche de tous les circuits amplificateurs a été effectuée.","PeriodicalId":55287,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering-Revue Canadienne De Genie Electrique et Informatique","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2018-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1109/CJECE.2018.2859621","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45400342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fuzzy logic controller can generate human knowledge-based control rules to solve complex nonlinear problems. Unlike a neural network, fuzzy systems cannot learn from data, and it takes a long time to modify the membership functions. The adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is a robust and intelligent system that integrates the capabilities of fuzzy logic and neural networks with several advantages such as adaptability, robustness, rapidity, and flexibility. In this paper, an ANFIS-based controller is proposed for controlling the reactive power provided by static var compensator to damp interarea oscillations. The controller input is a remote signal provided by a wide-area measurement system, and it is calculated as the center-of-inertia difference of generator rotor speed deviations. Moreover, a proportional-plus-derivative time-delay compensator with adaptive parameters is added to the controller to reduce the influence of time delay. A two-area four-machine test system is used and simulated with a Simulink-based package developed for the work of this paper. The time-domain simulations and frequency response analysis demonstrate the capability of the proposed controller to effectively damp interarea oscillations, under a small- and large-scale disturbances and against a wide range of time delays and load uncertainty.","PeriodicalId":55287,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering-Revue Canadienne De Genie Electrique et Informatique","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2018-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1109/CJECE.2018.2868754","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42722847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimum performance means acceptable voltage profile, increased reliability of supply, no overloading of cables and distribution transformers, the absence of unbalances in both voltage and current phases, and acceptable loss. This study involves the effective mitigation of power quality disturbance in secondary distribution networks as a result of voltage variation and voltage imbalance using a very effective power electronics-based custom power controller known as DVR. A DVR is connected between the secondary distribution transformer and the customer load along a feeder with a radial arrangement. An innovative new design-model of the DVR has been proposed and developed using dq0 controller and the proportional integral controller method. Model simulations were carried out using MATLAB/Simulink in Sim Power System tool box. The simulation results attest to the optimal performance of the proposed DVR configuration in mitigating the power quality problems, correcting voltage unbalance, and enhancing the voltage profile at the customer side to a statutory limit of ±5.","PeriodicalId":55287,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering-Revue Canadienne De Genie Electrique et Informatique","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2018-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1109/CJECE.2018.2858841","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45255101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a configuration is applicable where high resolution and accuracy is essential particularly in uncertain conditions. The proposed controller is a model-free controller independent of the model dynamics and variations that occur in a system. It is capable of autolearning to handle unforeseen disturbances. To evaluate the performance of the BELBIC controller in realistic conditions, the uncertainty of the system as a result of mechanical parameter variation and load torque disturbance is considered. To verify an excellent dynamic performance and the feasibility of the BELBIC, the system is simulated in MATLAB Simulink, and the results of the simulation are compared with an optimized proportional integral (PI) controller. The simulation results confirm the superior performance of the BELBIC for fast and precise speed response as well as its potential in dealing with nonlinearity and uncertainty handling as compared with that of the PI controller. The proposed controller is used in realistic applications, such as tunable-laser system and robot-assisted surgery.","PeriodicalId":55287,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering-Revue Canadienne De Genie Electrique et Informatique","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2018-08-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1109/CJECE.2018.2849357","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45664132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But, there is no method or appropriate criteria to compare proposed algorithms or investigate whether or not an algorithm is suitable for these next-generation WSNs. Indeed, due to resource constraints in WSN nodes and lack of an evaluation method, most high-performance algorithms are renounced for the next-generation WSNs without any investigation. For example, many references have proposed low-performance, low-complexity energy detection (ED) method for C-WSNs without any analysis or evaluation, only because ED has the least complexity among all spectrum sensing methods. In this paper, we propose an appropriate set of criteria and a comparative method for evaluating algorithms in next-generation WSNs. Then, we develop the method for evaluation of spectrum sensing algorithms in C-WSNs. Finally, we investigate ED, the multitaper method (MTM), and united MTM (UMTM) spectrum sensing algorithms based on our comparative approach.","PeriodicalId":55287,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering-Revue Canadienne De Genie Electrique et Informatique","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2018-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1109/CJECE.2018.2815542","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47837746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using prediction operations, dynamic state estimation (DSE) is considered as an applicable and efficient means for online tracking and monitoring of a network. In this paper, a new criterion has been introduced for DSE of power system to maximize the posterior probability density function. Furthermore, a comprehensive dynamic model consistent with information available from the network will be recommended. The dynamic state estimator proposed in this paper applies an imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) to minimize the presented criterion, which is considered as constraints of the dynamic model of the network. The presented method is more advantageous than other state estimation methods, which are based on Kalman and statistical methods including independence to system linearity, Gaussian noise, and biopsy procedure. Moreover, according to considerations recommended for forming imperialists in ICA and predictable property of the suggested method, this state estimator is robust against data falsification. To compare, the presented method and other dynamic state estimators were implemented for an IEEE 9-bus system. Simulation results proved efficiency and superiority of the proposed method in robust estimation and fast tracking of network states.","PeriodicalId":55287,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering-Revue Canadienne De Genie Electrique et Informatique","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2018-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1109/CJECE.2016.2629981","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46000723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, large numbers of sensors have been added within smart homes to enhance home appliance automation and monitoring. This addition raises questions about where the data generated within the home should be processed. The data can be processed either by one central processor or through multiple distributed processors closer to the sensors. This paper proposes a smart home distributed architecture involving home sensors talking directly to a smart gateway installed within the home. The gateway then decides which data should be forwarded to the central processor for further analysis. A test bed is designed to highlight the advantages of this approach. An open data set is used to feed sensor data into the test setup. It is shown that the local processing of data can improve efficiency by effectively utilizing available network bandwidth. Furthermore, local processing is favorable for time-critical smart home applications, since local processing has a faster data communication round trip time as compared with that of central processing. Moreover, we argue that certain calculations, like energy usage prediction for home appliances, can effectively be done locally while the central processor can be used for coordination between different local processors.","PeriodicalId":55287,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering-Revue Canadienne De Genie Electrique et Informatique","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1109/CJECE.2017.2776975","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42961335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Suspendance terms are expressed in terms of circuit admittances and transadmittances. The admittance transfer function at each node of a circuit is equal to the ratio of the suspendance obtained when the node is open to the suspendance obtained when the node is shorted. To calculate the suspendance for each case, every passive circuit component is shorted one at a time and its admittance is multiplied by the suspendance of the remaining circuit. Admittances of previously shorted components are set to zero in succeeding calculations. The overall suspendance is calculated by summing all individual results obtained from each step. In comparison with all existing circuit analysis methods, suspendance calculation is easier, faster, and more practical.","PeriodicalId":55287,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering-Revue Canadienne De Genie Electrique et Informatique","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1109/CJECE.2017.2786580","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42529745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents operation and design principles of RCD snubbers that can be effectively used in many industrial applications. The typical RCD snubbers can be classified as: 1) the switch-side snubber (if the snubbers are connected at the collector–emitter terminals of the transistor switch) and 2) the bus-side snubber (if the snubbers are connected at the dc bus). These two classes of snubbers are compared in terms of energy losses and operation under variable duty cycle theoretically. The latter snubber topology is chosen in this work as a more advantageous approach. The paper further proposes the design methodology for the bus-side snubbers. The proposed snubber methodology and its functionality are verified using the detailed simulation as well as the experimental prototype of a three-phase converter feeding 60-hp induction motor.","PeriodicalId":55287,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering-Revue Canadienne De Genie Electrique et Informatique","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1109/CJECE.2018.2809701","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48430788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially, under harsh operating environments, the power devices face various mechanical/thermal challenges, which can increase the equipment/device failure rate and cause unexpected interruptions and/or serious safety issues. This paper focuses on estimating the ON-resistance of the MOSFET/IGBT devices in real time while operating in space-vector pulsewidth modulation mode to monitor the status on power MOSFET/IGBT devices in real time, hoping that it can avoid those unexpected interruptions for safety. Since the increase in ON-resistance of the power MOSFET is identified as the fault signature, it is worthwhile to measure ON-resistance to prevent the output voltage distortions and the amplitude reduction from the set reference voltage in advance.","PeriodicalId":55287,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering-Revue Canadienne De Genie Electrique et Informatique","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1109/CJECE.2017.2785780","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46998488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
