Isert and Thonning's plants and Schumacher's Beskrivelse af Guineiske Planter (1827) – A Danish legacy to the study of the West African flora. Candollea 76: 171–190. In English, English abstract. In the late 18th century, the Danish government planned to establish plantations in Danish Guinea (now southeastern Ghana), and detailed botanical studies were initiated for this. Material of more than 600 species was collected, mostly preserved at C, with duplicates at B, BM, FI-W, G, G-DC, K, LE, M, P-JU and S. Duplicates were distributed and studied across Europe long before the publication of a treatment of the entire collection. Examples of research on duplicates at B, C, G and G-DC illustrate how the material was sometimes described under different names during this period, as when Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle in Geneva took up Thonning's intended generic name Tricliceras Thonn. ex DC. for a new genus, while Schumacher in Copenhagen named the same genus Wormskioldia Schumach. & Thonn. This example also illustrates the contacts between Danish botanists and Candolle in Geneva, both directly and via Marc Nicolas Puerari. A manuscript dealing with the entire Guinean collection was ready by 1819, but only published when the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters took responsibility for it. Archival studies document that, on 30 June 1826, the Academy decided to publish Beskrivelse but not when and how a preprint became available. In a range of libraries in Europe and USA there are copies of this preprint entitled Beskrivelse af Guineiske Planter and the year of publication given as “1827”, while in the regular series of the Academy's publications the first 228 pages of Beskrivelse appeared in 1828 and the remaining 236 in 1829. The International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants stipulates that the priority of all new names published in a work must be counted from the year indicated as the year of publication on the work itself, unless this can be documented to be wrong, so 1827 must stand as the year of publication. Soon after that, Beskrivelse became an important source of information on West African plants. Chambouleyron, M. Charrier, J.-F. Léger & M. Perret (2021). Revision of the genus Ammodaucus (Apiaceae) in North Africa. Candollea 76: 191–200. In French, English and French abstracts. Recent collections from southern Anti-Atlas and northern oceanic Sahara identified as Ammodaucus leucotrichus Coss. & Durieu and Cuminum maroccanum Davis & Hedge (Apiaceae) led us to present a taxonomic revision of the genus Ammodaucus Coss. & Durieu in northern Africa, which is based on morphological and molecular data. Phylogenetic inferences based on original and previously published ITS ribosomal DNA sequences clearly demonstrated that Cuminum maroccanum is not related to the genus Cuminum L. but instead nested within Ammodaucus, which forms a distinct lineage in the subtribe Daucinae. Two clades within Ammodaucus are recognised. The first one includes the accessions corresponding to Cuminum maroccanum, characterized by having long bracteoles and fusiform mericarps and the second one includes the accessions corresponding to Ammodaucus leucotrichus, which displays short bracteoles and oboval mericarps. On this basis, the species Cuminum maroccanum is transferred to the genus Ammodaucus and the name Ammodaucus leucotrichus subsp. nanocarpus Beltrán-Tej. is included in the synonymy. Joaquim José da Silva (c. 1755–1810): his life, natural history collecting activities, and involvement in the so-called first scientific expedition in the interior of Angola. Candollea 76: 125–138. In English, English abstract. The Portuguese naturalist Joaquim José da Silva (c. 1755–1810) was sent to Angola in the late 18th century to collect natural history specimens, as part of the “viagens philosophicas”, a series of expeditions funded by the Portuguese state to its overseas territories. Silva arrived in Angola in 1783 and remained in the country until his death 27 years later. An account of Silva's life and activities is provided. His travel itineraries in Angola are mapped and a list of his collections that could be located is presented. The little-known expedition to the Cunene River in which he participated is discussed. It was the first expedition to the interior of Angola during which plants were collected for deposition in a herbarium. His plant collections are recorded in the literature as numbering over 200 specimens that are held in the Herbarium of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris (P), after they were removed from Lisbon, Portugal, by Étienne Geoffroy St. Hilaire (1772–1844) during the Napoleonic War, in 1808. The Silva collections served as original material for describing at least 24 names. However, the Silva specimens at P lack collector's name and date and are difficult to trace. Only about 20% of these collections have been located in P. Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle's L'Heritier Reliquiae: A volume of miscellaneous prints in Geneva. Candollea 76: 145–165. In English, English abstract. A bound volume of miscellaneous prints previously owned by Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle and today kept in the library of the Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques in Geneva is analysed. It consists of six very rare leaflets published by Charles-Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle and of several finished and unfinished engravings almost exclusively based on drawings by Pierre-Joseph Redouté. A considerable proportion of these unfinished engravings can be correlated with finished engravings kept in a volume of prints in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, which is all that was published of the last two fascicles of L'Héritier's incomplete Stirpes novae. Notes on the taxonomy and nomenclature of the genera Buchozia L'Hér. (Rubiaceae), Hymenopappus L'Hér. (Asteraceae), Louichea L'Hér. (Caryophyllaceae), Michauxia L'Hér. (Campanulaceae) and Virgilia L'Hér. (Asteraceae) are included and their respective type species clarified. Lectotypes are designated for four names and the new combination Buchozia japonica (Thunb.) Callm. is provided. Furthermore, the complex historical background of the leaflets and the miscellaneous engravings is explained and set into the context of plant taxonomy in Paris during the two final decades of the eighteenth century.
