For that reason, we defined the following research objectives: 1) to compare species richness, composition, and dissimilarity of lichen communities among three vegetation types; 2) to explore the incidence of environmental variables on lichen community species composition; and 3) to identify species and functional traits indicative of each vegetation type. Based on lichens' collection of Aguascalientes (HUAA herbarium), the relationships between species, traits, and environmental variables were represented through beta diversity components, non-metric multidimensional scales, Indicator Species Analysis, and Fourth Corner Analysis. In total, 218 lichen species were found, 132 in Quercus L. forests, 90 in subtropical shrubland, and 85 in xerophytic shrubland. Vegetation types had beta diversity total values higher than 0.8, although paired comparisons revealed variations in species replacement and richness. The indicator species identified for Quercus forests were Parmotrema acutatum Kurok., while for subtropical shrubland Phaeophyscia nashii Essl. and Physcia biziana (A.Massal.) Zahlbr. No indicator species were identified for xerophytic shrubland. Functional traits indicative of xerophytic shrubland were crustose lichens and the saxicolous substrate. Subtropical shrubland indicators comprised soredia and foliose narrow lobes, whereas indicators of Quercus forest consisted of foliose wide lobes and the epiphyte substrate. The functional trait approach used in the study of Mexican lichen communities is highly recommended given the observed similarities between taxonomical and functional community assemblages and the ease with which the functional traits approach links species composition to environmental variables. Thalli of the Cladonia chlorophaea species group with horizontal primary thalline lobes and sorediate, cup-, funnel-, goblet- or wineglasss-shaped podetia contain twelve different lichen secondary metabolites (atranorin, congrayanic, cryptochlorophaeic, 4-O-methyl-cryptochlorophaeic, fumarprotocetraric, grayanic, 4-O-demethyl-grayanic, homosekikaic, merochlorophaeic, norrangiformic, quaesitic, rangiformic and thamnolic acids) in various combinations. Six taxa are currently distinguished at species level based mainly on these substances. The 281 specimens kept in herbaria as Cladonia chlorophaea s.l. collected in Hungary were analysed by high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC). The chemical revision allowed to separate C. asahinae J.W.Thomson, C. cryptochlorophaea Asahina, C. grayi G.Merr. ex Sandst., C. merochlorophaea Asahina and C. novochlorophaea (Sipman) Brodo & Ahti from C. chlorophaea s.str. Three species – C. asahinae, C. grayi and C. novochlorophaea – represent new distribution records to Hungary. The morphological characters differentiating these species according to the literature data were less obvious. Therefore, a detailed morphometric study of 227 podetia – considering the size of podetia, cup, stalk, soredia and squamules – was carried out on selected specimens. Although Cladonia asahinae and C. cryptochlorophaea were usually smaller than the robust C. chlorophaea (Flörke ex Sommerf.) Spreng. or C. merochlorophaea, the chemical characteristics supplied more stable results than morphological metrics. Buyck & V.Hofst., R. pseudoflavida A.Ghosh, Hembrom, I.Bera & Buyck, sp. nov. in subg. Russula emend. Buyck & V.Hofst., and R. shoreae D.Chakr., A.Ghosh, K.Das & Buyck, sp. nov. in subg. Heterophyllidiae Romagnesi, emend. Buyck & V.Hofst., are described based on morphotaxonomy and molecular data. Russula boddingii Hembrom, D.Chakr., A.Ghosh & K.Das, sp. nov. is characterised by medium to large-sized (30-160 mm) pileus, a more intense blackening of the flesh after cutting or bruising, the unequal, polydymous lamellae with some forkings present at different distances from the stipe, the absence of pileocystidia, the stronger reticulation of the spore ornamentation, the more-slender hyphal endings in the pileipellis and its occurrence under dipterocarps in Asia. Russula pseudoflavida A.Ghosh, Hembrom, I.Bera & Buyck, sp. nov. is unique in having very small to medium sized (10-45 mm) pileus, very long “primordial” hyphae usually with strong incrustations covering most of the surface, distinctly smaller spores and occurrence under Shorea robusta C.F.Gaertn. On the other hand, R. shoreae D.Chakr., A.Ghosh, K.Das & Buyck, sp. nov. is characterised by the absence of strong celery-like taste and odour, and is ectomycorrhizal with Shorea robusta. Detailed morphological descriptions, illustrations, phylogenetic analyses of ITS and three-locus (combined nrLSU-mtSSU-rpb2) phylogeny for these three species are presented in this communication. Comparisons with morphologically similar and genetically related species are also provided. Three are corticolous species from Brazil: T. multireflexa Aptroot & M.F.Souza, sp. nov., collected in the Chapada dos Guimarães, municipality of Cuiabá, a Cerrado region in the state of Mato Grosso; T. obesimarginata L.A.Santos, Aptroot & M.Cáceres, sp. nov., collected in Caraça, in Campo rupestre in Minas Gerais state; and T. vinacea L.A.Santos, Aptroot, Lücking & M.Cáceres, sp. nov., collected in the Parque Nacional Vale do Catimbau, municipality of Buique, a Caatinga region in the state of Pernambuco, with additional specimens from Mato Grosso do Sul. All are somewhat similar to T. atra (Huds.) Hafellner in morphological and anatomical features but differ chiefly in secondary chemistry, as well as partially in ascospore dimensions and substrate ecology: lichexanthone in the apothecial margins and α-collatolic acid in the medulla of the apothecial margin in T. multireflexa Aptroot & M.F.Souza, sp. nov.; lichexanthone in the thallus and the (unevenly thickened) apothecial margin in T. obesimarginata L.A.Santos, Aptroot & M.Cáceres, sp. nov.; and fatty acids in T. vinacea L.A.Santos, Aptroot, Lücking & M.Cáceres, sp. nov. Molecular data for T. vinacea L.A.Santos, Aptroot, Lücking & M.Cáceres, sp. nov. and T. obesimarginata L.A.Santos, Aptroot & M.Cáceres, sp. nov., demonstrate that they are not closely related to T. atra but form part of a previously unrecognized clade apparently restricted to South America, several of them remaining undescribed. A further new, saxicolous species, T. xanthonica Guzmán-Guillermo, sp. nov., is described from Brazil and Mexico; it is similar to T. obesimarginata L.A.Santos, Aptroot & M.Cáceres, sp. nov. and T. velloziae Kalb in producing lichexanthone in the thallus and apothecial margins, but differs in its substrate ecology and in having an areolate thallus. Two additional species described from Brazil are here combined into the genus: T. carassensis (Vain.) Aptroot & Lücking, comb. nov. and T. epichlorina (Vain.) Aptroot & Lücking, comb. nov. In a survey on microsphaeropsis-like fungi associated with Zagrosian forest trees in Iran, four new Paramicrosphaeropsis species were identified and described including P. amygdalus M.Mehrabi-Koushki, S.Artand, K.D.Hyde & Jayaward., sp. nov. from Amygdalus scoparia Spach., P. pistacicola M.Mehrabi-Koushki, S.Artand, K.D.Hyde & Jayaward., sp. nov. from Pistacia spp., P. salandica M.Mehrabi-Koushki, S.Artand, K.D.Hyde & Jayaward., sp. nov. from Crataegus sp., Nerium oleander L., Quercus brantii Lindl. and Ziziphus sp., and P. zagrosensis M.Mehrabi-Koushki, S.Artand, K.D.Hyde & Jayaward., sp. nov. from Crataegus sp. and Quercus brantii. Phylogenetic analyses based on a combination of four genomic regions, including the partial nuclear 28S ribosomal DNA (LSU), internal transcribed spacer regions 1 and 2 including the intervening 5.8S nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS), partial β-tubulin (tub2) and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (rpb2), are provided to clarify the phylogenetic affinities of the new species and other taxa within the Microsphaeropsis complex. In addition, a new genus Heteromicrosphaeropsis M.Mehrabi-Koushki, K.D.Hyde & Jayaward., gen. nov. and five new combinations are introduced. The new combinations are Heteromicrosphaeropsis ononidicola (Thambug., Camporesi & K.D.Hyde) M.Mehrabi-Koushki, K.D.Hyde & Jayaward., comb. nov., Microsphaeropsis cytisi (W.J.Li & K.D.Hyde) M.Mehrabi-Koushki, K.D.Hyde & Jayaward., comb. nov., M. cytisicola (Wanas., Camporesi, E.B.G.Jones & K.D.Hyde) M.Mehrabi-Koushki, K.D.Hyde & Jayaward., comb. nov., M. cytisinus (Tennakoon, Camporesi & K.D.Hyde) M.Mehrabi-Koushki, K.D.Hyde & Jayaward., comb. nov. and M. minima (W.J.Li & K.D.Hyde) M.Mehrabi-Koushki, K.D.Hyde & Jayaward., comb. nov.
