Dada su posicion biogeografica, la flora y fauna marina venezolana esta compuesta por especies de biorregiones muy distintas como lo son el Caribe y el Delta del Orinoco. En el Caribe, los ecosistemas han recibido una atencion considerable, sin embargo, debido al tremendo impacto de actividades humanas tales como el turismo, sobreexplotacion de recursos marinos, alteracion fisica, la industria petrolera y contaminacion, entre otras, estos ambientes se encuentran bajo un gran riesgo y su biodiversidad esta altamente amenazada. Los ecosistemas mas representativos de esta region incluyen las playas arenosas, litorales rocosos, praderas de fanerogamas marinas, arrecifes coralinos, comunidades de fondos blandos y bosques de manglar. El Delta del Orinoco esta constituido por un grupo muy complejo de ecosistemas marinos, estuarinos y dulceacuicolas, los habitats son muy diversos pero hay muy poca informacion disponible acerca de este sistema. En este trabajo resumimos lo conocido, lo cual es toda la informacion disponible en Venezuela acerca de la investigacion cientifica en biodiversidad, los diferentes ecosistemas y el grado de conocimiento que ha sido generado a traves de diversos tipos de publicaciones, las colecciones biologicas, la importancia y el alcance de las areas protegidas como reservas de biodiversidad y el marco legal institucional dirigido hacia su proteccion y uso sustentable. Igualmente, para lo desconocido, proponemos como prioridad de investigacion la estimacion de area, el listado completo de las especies y el estado de salud de los principales ecosistemas a una escala a nivel nacional. Esta nueva informacion debe ser integrada y resumida en bases de datos de sistemas de informacion geografica, accesible a la comunidad cientifica asi como a las agencias encargadas de los planes de manejo. A largo plazo, un inventario genetico deberia incluirse como una necesidad para establecer un mejor conocimiento de los recursos biologicos. Proponemos posibles proyectos a futuro en una escala local (Venezuela), regional (Caribe Sur: Colombia, Venezuela y las Antillas) y global (America del Sur).","PeriodicalId":55128,"journal":{"name":"GAYANA","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4067/S0717-65382003000200012","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45721205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Las bacterias de la Antartica, poseen caracteristicas fisiologicas adaptativas que habrian evolucionado para permitir su supervivencia y funcionamiento dentro de las condiciones adversas de ese ecosistema. Por lo tanto, bacterias aisladas desde algas antarticas podrian tener la capacidad de degradar enzimaticamente azucares complejos a temperaturas inferiores que aquellas aisladas desde zonas mas calidas, lo que potencialmente podria tener aplicaciones en la mejora en procesos industriales que utilizan enzimas. El analisis del gen ribosomal 16S indica que la cepa bacteriana aislada desde algas varadas en la Isla Rey Jorge (Antartica), pertenece al genero Bacillus. El sobrenadante libre de celulas presento actividad agarasa y alginatoliasa. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en la temperatura optima para hidrolizar agarosa y alginato, evaluada dentro de un rango de 4 a 30 °C. La actividad agarolitica fue mayor a 4 °C, mientras que la actividad alginatoliasa fue mayor a 30 °C. Estos resultados poseen un alto valor biotecnologico y podria ser utilizada con fines industriales.","PeriodicalId":55128,"journal":{"name":"GAYANA","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4067/S0717-65382013000200001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47350882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Incluye un analisis de los avances en conservacion y manejo, y de los recursos con que se dispone para la investigacion. El analisis mostro principalmente la escasez de recursos humanos y las limitadas facilidades de laboratorios y de estaciones costeras de investigacion de que disponen las instituciones. Tambien se hizo un analisis de los vacios de informacion a nivel taxonomico y de estudios ecosistemicos, que reflejo una escasez de estudios en la mayoria de grupos taxonomicos y comunidades biologicas. Finalmente, las consultas y discusiones promovidas en el seno de la comunidad cientifica, permitieron identificar como principales retos para las investigaciones futuras a: la formacion y capacitacion de recursos humanos, el desarrollo de inventarios taxonomicos, el estudio de endemismos y areas de especiacion, la aplicacion de nuevas tecnologias en el monitoreo biotico y abiotico del ecosistema y la evaluacion de los impactos del cambio global sobre la biodiversidad marina.","PeriodicalId":55128,"journal":{"name":"GAYANA","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4067/S0717-65382003000200009","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48301730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

La masiva abundancia de filamentos bacterianos visibles a simple vista y el extremadamente escaso macrobentos animal, fueron rasgos inesperados. Mas recientemente (2004) un nuevo ensamble de bacterias filamentosas multicelulares mas pequenas fue descubierto distribuido en los sedimentos mas reducidos sub-superficiales del tapiz bacteriano. Hoy reconocemos que este ecosistema dominado por procariotas constituye un rasgo mayor y distinto al nivel mundial el que aqui denominamos \"Sulfureto de Humboldt\" (SH) por su distribucion entre Peru central y Chile central. Durante un largo periodo de una intensa investigacion que surge despues de 1977, con fuerte contribucion internacional, se ha acumulado un gran cuerpo de informacion sobre el primer ensamble y su ambiente, fundamental para la comprension del funcionamiento del Gran Ecosistema Marino de Humboldt, en tanto que la investigacion sobre el segundo ensamble recien comienza. In particular, negative perceptions may encourage poaching and persecution of these birds, affecting their conservation status. One nocturnal raptor species widely distributed across the world is the Barn Owl (Tyto alba, Tytonidae). In Chile, this species has been recorded and studied exclusively in rural and sub-urban areas. However, in the city of Valdivia Barn owls exist within the city boundaries. In this study we documented the feeding habits of Barn owls nesting in urban settings of Valdivia, and we analyze the opinions of local neighbors toward the owls. To characterize the diet of owls, we collected all pellets found around their nesting tree on a monthly basis between August 2010 and August 2011. We interviewed the neighbors using a questionnaire that included questions about the utility, ethical or aesthetic value of the owl and the tree where they nested. Our results indicate that the main prey of the Barn Owl was the Long-tailed Colilargo (Oligoryzomys longicaudatus). The neighbors’ perception was favorable to the Barn Owl primarily for aesthetic and ethical reasons, and not utilitarian reasons. Our results suggest that people perception in urban areas is different than in rural areas, where previous studies showed the prevalence of utilitarian values. This positive perception represents a great potential to promote conservation and environmental education in the city, creating a link between people and the natural elements they have in their environment.","PeriodicalId":55128,"journal":{"name":"GAYANA","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4067/S0717-65382017000100009","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48649918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
