The purpose of this study is to examine the psychometric properties of the J-MOHOST for the physical disabilities.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>Forty-four participants were recruited from the rehabilitative wards and data, including demographic variables and the J-MOHOST scores, were obtained. The fit statistics, rating scale characteristics, and reliability index were examined using the Rasch analysis.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>There were no misfitting participants, and the J-MOHOST measures reliably separated the participants into 3.95 statistically distinct strata with a person reliability of .88. The result of item fit showed that it did not have noticeable problem in the items of the J-MOHOST. Moreover, the item reliability was .88. The content of the item difficulty could represent the characteristics of occupational participation of the participants in conformity with the rating system of the J-MOHOST.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>The J-MOHOST rating scale could discriminate the level of occupational participation in physical disabilities. The results indicate that the J-MOHOST is an effective tool for measurement. In addition, we also aimed to investigate and clarify these complex experiences and formulate results that are both meaningful and important to the families themselves.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>Families who had lost a family member (<em>n</em> = 9) and were part of a palliative treatment support programme were identified through introductions from healthcare workers. They were individually interviewed using both casual questioning and semistructured questionnaires. Data were collected using the World Health Organization QOL-BREF, Index of Marital Satisfaction, and SES Questionnaires. Data analysis was done by analysis of variance and multivariate analysis of variance tests.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The findings of the study showed that SES is associated strongly with the environmental domain (<em>p</em> < .001, <em>r</em><sup>2</sup> = .421), marital satisfaction with the social domain (<em>p</em> < .001, <em>r</em><sup>2</sup> = .394), and PDDs' subtype with the psychological domain (<em>p</em> < .001, <em>r</em><sup>2</sup> = .283). Mothers of children with autistic disorder subtype reported lower QOL in all domains compared with other subtypes (<em>p</em> < .05).</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>The determinants such as SES, marital satisfaction, and subtypes of PDDs have an important influence on QOL of mothers of children with PDDs. The purpose of this study was to assess the intrarater and inter-rater reliability as well as concurrent validity of the figure-of-eight technique of measuring hand volume by 4th year (of a 5-year curriculum) occupational therapy students.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>This study used a cross-sectional design of a single group with three-level repeated measures of five raters. Twenty-three healthy students participated in this study. Five raters (4th year occupational therapy students) performed three separate blinded figure-of-eight measurements of hand volume for each hand. Two independent examiners performed one volumetric measurement for each hand using a water volumeter. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to examine the intrarater and inter-rater reliabilities of figure-of-eight measurements. Pearson product-moment correlations were used to establish concurrent validity relative to the volumeter which is the gold standard.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Intrarater reliability (ICC, 3<em>k</em>) ranged from .98 to .99 and the inter-rater reliability (ICC, 2<em>k</em>) was .99. The Pearson correlation coefficient for the concurrent validity was <em>r</em> = .929 (<em>p</em> < .001).</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>This study demonstrated that five occupational therapy students in the 4th year of a 5-year curriculum were reliable raters for hand volume using the figure-of-eight technique, after being trained and tested for competency. {"title":"The Relationship Between Homebound Status and Occupational Competence, and Its Effects on Health-related Quality of Life","authors":"Yu Ishibashi , Takashi Yamada , Norikazu Kobayashi , Mime Hashimoto , Kirsty Forsyth","doi":"10.1016/j.hkjot.2013.03.001","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.hkjot.2013.03.001","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objective/Background</h3><p>This study aims to develop a fuller understanding of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes for older adults who were homebound (either occupationally competent or not occupationally competent) and not homebound (either occupationally competent or not occupationally competent).</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>All the study participants were ≥65 years of age (<em>N</em> = 5,135) and lived in the city of Arakawa (Tokyo, Japan). Questionnaires were inclusive of the Short Form-8 for HRQOL and Occupational Self-Assessment (version 2.1), and were sent to participants by mail. The response rate was 38.7% (1,991/5,135) and the valid rate response was 66.1% (1,317/1,991). The participants were divided into four groups, namely, group A (not homebound/high occupational competence), group B (not homebound/low occupational competence), group C (homebound/high occupational competence), and group D (homebound/low occupational competence). This study analyzed the HRQOL using analysis of variance.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Group A (not homebound/high occupational competence) had the highest HRQOL, whereas group D (homebound/low occupational competence) had the lowest HRQOL among the four groups. However, group C (homebound/high occupational competence) had higher HRQOL than group B (not homebound/low occupational competence).</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>Occupational competence is not dependent on homebound status. Fong","doi":"10.1016/j.hkjot.2012.12.009","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.hkjot.2012.12.009","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objective/Background</h3><p>This study aims to review the current evidence on effectiveness of mirror therapy (MT) in improving motor function of the hemiplegic upper limb (UL) among the adult stroke population in the last 12 years.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>A systematic review of studies published in English from 1999 to 2011, retrieved from four electronic databases MEDLINE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Sage Online, and ScienceDirect, was performed. Only articles focusing on the effects of MT to train UL motor function were included. The methodological quality of the studies was appraised based on the design and Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Of the 1,129 articles, nine (six randomised controlled trials and three case reports) were reviewed. The majority of the studies were heterogeneous in design. The review indicated that the strength of current evidence for the use of MT with the stroke population is moderate and seemed to benefit participants with subacute stroke. Little is known about its long-term sustainability, the right target group of the stroke population, and the optimal time to start intervention.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>More research is needed to determine the optimal dose of therapy, optimal time to start this intervention, and the right target group. The model of human occupation (MOHO)-driven occupational therapy (OT) intervention was compared with interventions that were based on other theories, for example, biomechanical and neurodevelopmental frames of reference.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>A total of 36 service users were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (who received MOHO-based OT) or a control group (who received “usual OT”). All the service users were assessed using the Activities of Daily Living (ADL), WHO Quality of Life 26 (QOL-26), MOS-36-Item Short Form Health (SF-36) before and after a 12-week OT intervention.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Based on the results of our study, we found that the experimental group significantly improved in ADL and QOL scores following the MOHO-based OT intervention; in fact, these scores were higher (<em>p</em> < .05) than before the practice. The control group, however, only improved on ADL scores following OT intervention.
